Security & Privacy

Security & privacy always seem to big concerns on line. That listal doesn't offer the ability to hide my "owned" lists from anyone who isn't my friend seems a little odd. It seems possible that someone could connect someone's listal id with their real world id, know where they live, check out what they own on listal and then break into their house and nick stuff. I think it's probably unlikely but might put some people off using listal.

(The obvious work around at the moment if for me to add everything I own to a private "my stuff" list, then remove it all from my owned list)

I see your point but one of the main purposes of the site is to share the stuff you like/own etc. Having an option to make it private seems counter to these aims. I would obviously encourage anyone to not list their address any where on the internet. Having said this I might add this option to the vip membership upgrade.

But presumably it's mostly going to be people I already know that are going to be interested in what I own so I don't think it'd effect the purpose of the site that much.

also Tom, don't forget all the other "social" sites (like Facebook, Delicious etc.) have privacy options where you can hide certain stuff, despite the main purpose of sharing your pictures, bookmarks or underwear collection with the world. some other privacy issue that is annoying: you can't disable the collection of your data in search engines (like you can in Xing, Facebook etc.).
