Searching

Greetings,
I'm a new user to Listal, recently come over from LibraryThing. I have been trying to add my books and films, but I'm having some trouble in the searching department. How do I search for fields other than title? In particular, I want to add my particular edition of Frankenstein, but when I search I get hundreds of results.
Cheers,
Hollin

Well. You can always use the ISBN.
Or you can type in the author's name in the search box.
Or you can type in the author's name in the search box.

I've tried both of these options and each time they've come up with no results (even for very popular books) and said that no TITLE matched. I've used both author and ISBN. Any thoughts?

When you are searching for something, do you click on the drop down menu to make sure you are searching for books, not movies?
And you mentioned you were trying to add Frankenstein, so I typed in Mary Shelley in the search box and got this:
www.listal.com/search/books/1/?query=mary+shelley
Then I proceeded to click where it says search for books by Mary Shelley: www.listal.com/search/books/1/?author=mary+shelley&source=us
Plus I searched for Frankenstein and I got a bunch of results
www.listal.com/search/books/1/?query=frankenstein
Also it might be useful to check your spelling as Listal currently doesn't have a spell checker for it's searches. @_@
Worse comes to worse you can find your particular edition on Amazon and then use the ASIN to add it.

Yes, I get these same results. The problem is that when you search for Frankenstein you get over 1500 results. Am I really supposed to sift through all of them to find my edition? Other sites deal with this problem by letting you search IBSNs, but I can't figure out how to do that here.

What's the book you are trying to add? I know it's Frankenstein but what's the ISBN and the edition?

There are many. Let's use the example of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Everyman's Library Edition, IBSN 0679409998.

You mean this one? www.listal.com/book/frankenstein-mary-wollstonecraft-shelley-1302253
If it is then this was surprisingly easy to figure out. :D
When you go to Books there's a bunch of links on the left under My Books. You need to click the one that says Add.
And viola, enter the ISBN and bam!

Wonderful!!! Thank you very much! I was only using the search box at the top of the page. I'll add books this way from now on. Thanks again for all your help.

Tom's changing it soon so you can add the work on its own, and then the version if you want to do so. If you haven't seen any of the Universal Classic Horror Films, I'd suggest doing so because the Romantic goth style is brilliantly captured. The only series I've seen all of is Frankenstein, but I have the 75th anniversary of Dracula with both versions. Pretty good stuff, though be aware the superb Universal Studios transfer leaves you with a pretty clear image of what's under Mina's dress in the Spanish version. I read both books years back so it's about time I go over them again.
