As collections grow, they should be searchable, by common sense. But for now you can search the item itself, and see who owns it.
Another useful feature would be a compare button, which would show the items & ratings you share with a user.
There are several ways of getting to this info, whether by clicking the Friends tab and then Compare or simply by viewing their profile and, on the top, it'll show recommendations and all that jazz. Though the friends comparison tool has a lot of untapped potential, and it should be more convenient as you say.
