Rock Music

RJ4 14 years, 2 months ago at Feb 23 17:32 -
Who else thinks that Rock music is just sinking, now I am not talking metal, or punk, I am talking about straight up rock. Do we need a band like Nirvana again to come out of nowhere and wake us up. Is rock just slowly dying or is it just going away like jazz did. Now Jazz is still popular but you never see it on the TV or on the radio. So what is up with rock?

Rock is an attitude.

It will never die as long as there are artists out there that have something different to say. Not "different" as in Lady Gaga way, more like a F-U mainstream media way ;)

cheers

Yea there's rarely any good rock any more. The only current rock bands I enjoy are Foo Fighters, Alter Bridge...wow that's all I got haha

I agree with you on the sorry state of rock music nowadays. Most of the young kids are into the top 40 Pop thing, which is something you don't want to get me started on, or dance/hiphop music.

It would be great if a no-frills, straight-out basic rock band would emerge and show us the way. They would probably not be able to sell any records and starve.

It has happened twice before. When the Progressive rock was getting too pompous and the glitter/glam rock was getting too decadent in the 70s, Punk came out and cut everything to the bone, putting the raw emotion and feeling back in rock.

After a while, it was sanitized and went mainsteam as New Wave, which evolved into another form of Pop. Then, in the 90s, the Grunge movement reminded us of our roots once more. Is it too much to hope that it can happen again?

There certainly has been a decline in the amount of rock bands. Many great rock bands which have established success, seem to take much longer to release new albums. I think what it comes down to is the lack of money being made in the music business. While teams of writers, producers, engineers, and studio musicians can be assembled to pump out Justin bieber, pink, rihanna, pit bull etc... it takes much longer writing and recording rock records. I find there to be plenty of worth while rock bands releasing great music. To name just a few Deftones, Chevelle, 10 Years, Staind, Breaking Benjamin, Taproot, Smashing Pumpkins, Silversun Pickups, Seether.

Muse seem to be the only rock band actually making new records - and they have become very erratic in style and strength - Panic Stations is a fun song but more some 80s dance thing than anything

Ironically we see the true spirit of rock in stuff by Skrillex

I agree with Blankend, Brit-Pop in 2000 was not powerful as Grunge in 90's, New Wave in 80's, Punk in 70's.
I don't see how Muse can take the crowd of The Eagles for example.

I will add another comment which is bound to upset the majority of rock fans .... rock is going the way of classical music because it is treating itself as elitist , something "special", something that requires special talent etc etc also its getting sucked into being technical with lots of copying rather than creating - just watch all those videos on youtube where guys play 100 riffs, technically great but I can almost guarantee they are not creating their own stuff

Rock music died in the late 70's, don't kid yourself. It was officially dead in the 80's when Hair Metal became the norm.
