Riots

I understand riots in most other countries that oppress or restrict its citizens, but anyone have a clue why there are riots in England?

It has become clear that the police can't handle the force of this many people rioting/looting at the same time and so people are taking it as a good opportunity to "steal what they can" while there is unrest. The people interviewed on Sky have given really loose reasons for doing it like "This is my bankers bonus", "We're getting our taxes back", "I wanna show the police they should respect me". It's complete nonsense, they think the world owes them something and are just continuing until someone stops them. The police need to get in and arrest as many as they can, like they are (over 600 arrested so far) but when people are throwing bricks/petrol bombs etc and starting fires I think it must be hard to just wade in and start cuffing people.

Over 3 days and still no rubber bullets or water cannons. That's how you control riots. The english police force does what it can with the means it has had so far.
One thing is clear for me, it's just insane what I've been watching on the news... hard to believe, but certainly very much real.

on american news "Can It Happen Here?" headlines are running nonstop. Americans are fucking lazy. We bitch about everything, but no one takes any action. It takes a lot to get us off our obese asses, which I guess is a good thing when half of your citizens are packing heat.
can't speak for the UK, but in general, americans do think rights outweigh responsibilities. lots of entitled assholes here who will loot the system any chance they get unless someone holding a gun stands in their way.
anyway, I hope things improve over there.

At the risk of being politically incorrect, I think:
- Britain is reaping the consequences of insane immigration, social welfare and social polices (e.g., education, housing) of the last fifty years.
- Britain, post-colonisation, said, "Give us your unwashed masses", and it got them. Britain now has 1 million illegal immigrants too - how could this happen! Oh, 'human rights'? Whatever.
- Political correctness is out of control - everyone's afraid to make the hard calls.
- Poverty and marginalisation are just excuses - I've lived in places that make the poor of England look positively affluent and they don't riot. Anyway, look at the recent riots - they weren't pillaging supermarkets, it seemed more luxury goods - and you can't eat a plasma TV or live in an iPod.
- The riots were supposedly in response to the alleged shooting of a young man by police (reminds me of the L.A. riots of 1992), but the basic reason they were rioting? Because they could!
Britain needs to decide what is more important - individual human rights or the collective rights of the community and society.

@Toa I don't mind challenges to conventional thinking, totally agree that it isn't poverty that is the cause. But I don't believe its immigration either; everyone is the same, and from what I've seen most people coming to this country study and work a whole lot harder than those born into privilege and expect everything to just fall into their laps. There are always examples of bad apples (Daily Mail front cover stories), but they exist everywhere. Our grandfathers earned the social welfare benefits for their children and grandchildren, and the current generations don't know any different, and won't really appreciate just what they have till its gone!
I think you nailed it on the head when you say its because they could. What made this stand out for me was the hit Orpington took from opportunist oiks www.youtube.com/watch?v=ntePhewVy_w
A police state won't solve anything, although some police in Orpington would have been nice. What we do need is our rights back to allow us all to correct social misdemeanors without fear of prosecution. The "I'll tell your Father" warning of old carries no weight now and this is made worse by the media glorifying bad/self destructive behavior.
Thankfully we had no trouble where I live, why? Because anyone causing trouble would quickly be put them on the right track - lawfully or not. Or because there aren't any major high-tech stores here, and all the local oiks were far away looting.

The same thing happened a few years back in France with some huge riots. My opinion is that Western society (in France or in Britain) is just full of hypocrisy. In the 60´s, they invited immigrants to work in Europe. They got the worst jobs, they were treated like garbage but they kept their mouth shout. In the mean time, they got kids who got stuck between 2 cultures which don´t recognize them and they watched their parents being humiliated all their life for the lowest wages. In the contray to their parents, they were born in Europe and from the start, they were confronted to luxury(a nice ride, a top model, a mansion, a great job, whatever) and like everyone else, they wanted to get this stuff but, not like everyone else, since they are children of immigrants and we live in a hypocrite and discrimating society, they won´t get most of those things. To conclude, if you keep this up for 30, 40 even 50 years, it is not a surprise that you end up with some riots.
