review suggestion

doudouce55 18 years ago at Apr 26 3:42 -
What I'd like to suggest is that anyone writing reviews be writing it for one version (ideally the one watched) and the same review comes back (without having to post it more than once) on the other versions - the same way Amazon does it, right? You review a hardcover, the same review shows up on the paperback version with a note "this review was based on the hardcover edition" or something of the sort.
It's just unfortunate that people who browse the, say, widescreen version would not read the review, if the review appears on the fullscreen version only - right?
This would apply to any book/dvd/game reviewed.
Also, if a review were written in the dvd section, it would have to also show up in the movies area.

Anyone for this?

This would be good, same thing for videos too I think since having to update them on all the different product pages that people own would just be annoying (I just stick to my own copies so far).

I didn't want to make a new thread, but here is a suggestion about description.

Mainly the part that it is to another item or something.

;-)

Why you have to enter your rating again (also a different rating is possible!?) if you review something?
DefenderOfKnowledge 18 years ago at May 6 0:12 -
I'm sorry, I was completely unclear on this....I don't know what I was thinking.

No, I meant to say that this is the description for that "Twilight Princess":
"The Metroid Prime trilogy comes to an end on the Wii..."
Not really about TP at all.

*EDIT*

Oh my gosh. This is just sad.

Check the reviews.

In truth, I think something does need to eventually be done about this, as people just keep double and triple posting their reviews. In my opinion, it kind of ruins the "recently reviewed" when I see the same person's review for the same movie three times in a row or something. It's also a form of spamming to increase points.

Again, this all goes under the whole movies/DVDs issue we're ahving, along with amalgamating the different versions and regions.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 8 13:55 -
Totally agree Voxy, it's a distortion of their actual rank and is messy.

I say we kidnap Tom, hog-tie him to his computer chair, and make him to a 48hrs coding marathon as dictated by our 'suggestions'. :)
doudouce55 18 years ago at May 8 18:18 -
Agree with Prelude76, let's find Tom!!!

And while we've got him, maybe he'll add that darn Delete Message function. it's getting annoying not to have one.

On the subject of reviews, I agree with you Voxy on the double posts, and the points. It would be *much better* if there were one review posted and then it would be repeated in the other related sections, thus limiting the points. However, until that is done.... "spamming" reviews it will have to be!
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 8 18:26 -
Tom! I promise we'll feed you if you come with us! Maybe...

Just remember, the reviews that are double-posted will each have their own stats, so when it comes to merging and cleaning up any votes on separate versions will most likely be deleted. Plus, it will be a lot more work for Tom to delete the multiple reviews if items are given one main page. ;) Do you think he's going to want to hunt them down manually?

Edit: And sorry, but posting the exact review up to as much as NINE times is just pointless, especially if renevations are on their way.

well rather than agree between ourselves wether we should be cross-posting across movies and all dvd versions, or just wait patiently until, if ever, the movie and dvd section will merge, why not hear from the big chief himself, Tom, as to what we should do on this matter?

Tom, what are your thoughts on cross-posting reviews?

And on a similar note, I too took an initiative that may backfire once changes are done, but I started making all my czech movies title show up in this format, all on one line: czech title (english title). It was suggested many many times that foreign language films should have their original names more prominently displayed in the list view, as well as when doing searches.

Is it an abuse of the current system? in a way, yes. but end result is much better display for foreign titles, and perhaps more users from foreign countries will join and stick around here.

and example of how it looks like: bwde.listal.com/all/movies/1/?tag=czech

If in future, the database is more friendly towards foreign titles of movies, then I'll go back and fix it, but in meantime, it gives the desired effect of having both foreign and english title displayed in my lists.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 8 20:22 -
Prelude, if you're comparing them as abuse of the system, then you have to take into the consideration that your changes are reversible. Currently users can't delete their own reviews though. ;)

*sits and waits for Tom to give his view*
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 11 14:25 -
*continues to wait*

Tom, I know you have a lot of work to do, but the sooner a little comment is made on this situation, the less work there will be with merging reviews in the future. ;)

No I do not think cross posting reviews is a good idea, in the case of movies it would be better to post a review in the movies section and then any specific comments on the dvd in the dvd section. They will be merged eventually.
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 13 10:40 -
Does someone want to clarify to Jessica that multiple posting of reviews is frowned upon? Seriously, I tried and she bit my head off. :(
Phil 18 years ago at May 13 11:02 -
If it comes to it, we can just get them edited off the site when stuff's automatically cross-posted.
print('a');
Phil 18 years ago at May 13 11:03 -
Sorry about that bit at the bottom.. just had a thought, fortunately Tom got there first :o)
tartan_skirt 18 years ago at May 13 12:31 -
Yeh, I think I'll try to ignore it rather than be eaten. *wanders away*

How about, instead of constantly singling me out for something which I have explained my reasons for, tartan_skirt just keeps her mouth shut...instead of constantly being completely rude?

The way she went about "trying" to inform me of something was completely rude and unappreciated. Sometimes, a little maturity is called for, which she just DID NOT have when taking it upon herself to act like a moderator going off all half-cocked and treating me like an idiot, when it was her who wasn't reading the information....not me.

Which was WHY it wasn't appreciated. Grow up and quit singling ME out. I am NOT doing anything to hurt you---it's not like I am posting reviews every day and skewing my points to take YOUR rank. Grow up. I have been sitting at the SAME rank for a while now.

Just leave me alone and quit being such a child about this.
You KNOW why I wasn't appreciative of your misguided attempt to "inform" me.......there was NO need to bring this public.

Childish, immature behaviour.
Thanks so much.
Not coming back to read this thread again, so DO NOT try and "inform" me yet again on information posted on a thread I am saying (yet again) I am not reading anymore of.

Quit picking on me. Leave me be and go bug others...oh, wait...you are already doing that.
tartan_skirt 17 years, 11 months ago at May 25 17:30 -
This was a week ago. Let it go.

If you do come back and read this, which I assume you will, please do go ahead and tell me how I am bugging others. If you are refering to BrodieBruce's reviews then that was because it was against copyright rules.

I don't know what I'm supposed to have done wrong here. :(

The reason you're being "singled out" is because you're the one most obvious and visible. She probably chose you just because we see your name doing that more often than anyone else's.

And remember that you have also attacked tartan specifically, when it wasn't just she who mentioned being irritated by the multiple reviews of the same product. If you've actually read this thread, then you'll see that numerous people mentioned that it is not helpful, and in fact a nuisance.
Ipanema 17 years, 11 months ago at May 26 7:18 -
We should all keep in mind that written communication could easily be misinterpreted because nonverbal communication (intonation, facial expression, etc.) isn't be transmitted.

first off, everyone RELAX... flame wars over suggestion ideas? come on. what's this world coming to. :)

yes, multiple reviews will tend to clutter-up the 'recent reviews' section. but to accuse someone of being a point-hog? come on. the people doing multiple-reviews across movies and dvds were doing this to HELP OUT others, because of the lack of cross-referencing between those sections.

if you look, everyone in this thread is an active member that is helping the community of listal grow, and since many parts of listal are still under-developed and don't have clear rules of what is / isn't allowed, we try out new things and see if its liked or not liked by the rest of the community, until Tom finalizes all the sections. there is no need to attack each other over difference in opinions of how Listal should look and be used.

When I joined up, I decided I'd prefer to see Movie Posters, not DVD covers, in the Movie sections, and most of my points are from uploading thousands of posters. For the most part, the majority liked this idea, though some stil try to switch certain images back to DVD covers. And recently, quite a few foreign titles that were first listed in English name have had the titles switched around, so foreign name is displayed first. Someone is doing it to Spanish and French titles, and I'm ok with that, even though it's not correct Listal procedure. So I'm trying out just putting foreign title (english title) in one line, rather than two separate entries, to see if that looks better and is more appropriate. Maybe some hate this, some love it, some don't care. Maybe Tom has his own plans for how to fix this up. Same goes for Cast members that are missing. Some person is adding (Missing actors) and listing all key missing cast members. Is it correct to put it into 'Edit Description'? no, not really, and its annoying to see, but it just shows someone trying to help fix a weak part of Listal. there is no point in attacking anyone that is 'trying' to help strengthen up weak parts of listal.

So before starting up wars because someone's action are causing your listal to be more cluttered, or more annoying, think to yourself "are they doing this out of malice, or are they trying to improve the site?"
