Re-submission of the same review - score pumping...?

szlevi 17 years, 3 months ago at Feb 4 22:19 -
Just revisited my review of Cloverfield - what a crap movie! - and noticed that some, when defending this movie in his review, submitted his 10/10 review 2-3 times in a row... hopefully it does not effect the final score... by the way do we need to allow more than 1 submission per movie? I don't really see the point here...

Another thing that infuriates me is when people submit the same review for different editions - different DVDs, US and Euro CD versions, all the same exact review with an occasional difference. There's digression from reviewing in that it doesn't rack up so many points, but there's abuse like with everything else.

Some people have secured thousands of points with only ten or so reviews.

Edit: Now that I look at the time of the review submission, I see that the member you're referring to probably just clicked the button three times over. Which doesn't disregard the fact that identical reviews for different editions are going to be entirely useless once things are linked together.

Yeah, Jessica does that a lot. There can be no other reason than to want to bump your own points with minimal effort. It's not something that can be fixed by merging items either as reviews for Movies and DVD's are different things entirely.

Maybe there could be a mod in charge of looking for these duplicates, or a duplicate reporting thread?

Well, the reason doesn't have to be so negative. Maybe they just want exposure to their reviews. With ownership now divided over several editions, reviewing just one might seem like a drop in the ocean. And this will be fixed eventually. Just 2 duplicate reviews for DVDs/movies doesn't sound so bad. (By the way, do you think everybody is aware that items will be merged? Or that you can now delete your reviews?)

In the meanwhile, I think it'd be good to come up with a fix so you can review an item only once. If you disagree with another reviewer you don't have to write yet another review (see Cloverfield), you can use comments instead.

I've done a review of Nine Inch Nails's The Downward Spiral that was about the DualDisc edition itself, not the album. We need to make the DVD section seem more like it revolves around packagings and less like they're movies.

I think it's just a mistake by the reviewer anyway I have delete the extra ones. When items are merged the duplicate reviews can be deleted by moderators or the original authors.

We need to make the DVD section seem more like it revolves around packagings and less like they're movies.

Makes sense to me too. It's just that for a lot of people who use the site it's more convenient to do all their cataloguing, rating & reviewing on the DVD section. I'm not sure if this is something you wanna force on people.

Cross-linking needs to be in play then. If a movie's on the DVD section, you should be able to add it from the DVD section. Like what we can do with an author of a book, you need to be able to go from the hardcopy to the thing itself.

This is one of those things we've complained about for a while. People seem to like putting their reviews in both the Movie section and the DVD section. Which might be understandable if it weren't for the fact that the reviews are exactly the same.

Again... it just all goes back to linking all these things together.

everyone should just relax. its the same as complaining that I put screenshots in both PC and european PC version of same game. Yes, in future, once items are merged, there will be duplicate pix and reviews, but those will be cleaned up. but for the time being, its helpful to see a review in both movies and dvd section, or to see same screenshots in certain games. the 'score pumping' is placebo effect, as this would have be done hundreds of time before it really affects people's ranks.

let's concentrate on cleaning up and adding content to what we have now, and deal with duplicate images and reviews later.

It's certainly something to be aware of for future reference. Why not discuss it? I agree that we should focus on adding what we can for now, though. We don't move if all we're doing is deleting unnecessaries.
