Removing the groups

I was thinking about removing the groups and merging all the threads into the appropriate forums/'official groups'.
They would be then relaunched at a later date with better features like public/private groups, ability to invite/kick members, better member list, more features tied into the items on the site, recommendations etc... Maybe there could also be restrictions on groups people can create in the future (no duplicates)
I know this could be considered controversial/drastic step but these are my reasons :
1. Some groups were started over a year ago and the original creators are not active anymore.
2. Most of the groups are pretty inactive when looked at individually.
3. Would remove all the redundant groups.
This is just a suggestion nothing definite planned right now..

It would give an incentive to join groups, too, which would help the relatively inactive ones. As things stand now, there's little point in joining a group, because their threads are all public and can be commented on by all anyway. I think these measures would also help with the flooding the boards have been suffering for a while, too; if you have to remove the boards while you work on this, I for one won't mind at all, if it means they'll be improved.

Sometimes a seemingly drastic approach is the best way to go! Basically I think it's a good idea too.

Groups separate different crowds of people, giving the forums a divided feeling.
So, when is the Naruto forum going up? :p

drastic = much needed. we're starting to lose some key members, both in their participation in the forums as well as perhaps leaving this site altogether, now that it has spiraled deep into MyNarutoSpace territory.
so my drastic suggestion: complete revamp of the groups, or better yet, only allow people with at least 10 reviews and/or 100+ ratings of items to post inside groups. basically, make it so only people that actually contribute to this site are allowed to post in the forums. seems fair. 90% of what is said in groups these days is chat-room level gibberish, usually by people who are listing nothing and contributing nothing to the overall quality of this site.

What about an under 18 forum? or an anime forum?
I have decided to delete the groups

An under 18 forum suggests adult content in the other forums, whereas all we're asking for is mature discussion. Besides, I'm under eighteen, and so are a few others who've been contributing to this website for a while.
An anime forum would be great. I don't know if deleting the groups is the best for everyone. Listal was always more than just a collection website; it had a social quality to it.
An ignore function would be good. Or you could assign sone of the top members as moderators, with the ability to ban and delete threads. An anime forum might be helpful, but the Naruto fan (I use singular because it seems to be just one person) might post in General Discussion anyway. He or she hasn't posted in these forums yet. If you deleted the groups, we couldn't offer suggestions or anything right here.
We could try an initiation rite similar to what Prelude just noted. Or the useless members can simply be banned from the forums, courtesy of some moderators. If there's no way to ban them from the forums without deleting their accounts altogether, than their accounts will have to go as well. Unless we can make their posts invisible to everyone except them. That way, people who like to amuse themselves with multiple accounts can feel right at home. ;)
EDIT: Okay, maybe it'll be easier to talk about the forums when Groups are gone. I thought you were saying you wanted to delete the whole forums!

I love idea of scraping groups altogether, and just going with forums. And then make a few forum areas, such as 'General Movies', 'General TV Shows', 'Anime' (hey, i really don't care if they love to chat together, but its easier on the rest of us if they are herded over to their own area), 'Music', and maybe even a few fun ones like 'Phylosophy and Religion', 'Current Events', 'Trading Forum', and 'Post your Lists & collections'.
and then somebody get a word out to Richard to get his arse back here. :)

Why not just a well-enforced rule governing duplicate threads:
- If there's already a thread on the topic on the front page then any duplicate threads made will be merged or deleted.
No one would give two craps about this naruto garbage if it weren't constantly pushing all the other threads off the front page.
Forums would be nice, but unless there's going to be some kind of moderation they'll devolve just as quickly as the groups did.

Instead of displaying all recent posts from all the groups...
I think only posts from groups you've joined should be shown.
And if you haven't joined any groups it shows posts from all groups.
I think this would benefit everybody...
-for those in Naruto groups : they will be able to see their posts and their little friend's posts.
-For those who like intelligent conversations : They won't have to see Naruto posts.
-And those date/love/horny/hot people: That way I won't have to see all their junky posts!

^ amen to all those suggestions

just had a brain fart regarding how to possibly fix this 'flood' of stupid chatter - first from people thinking its a dating site, and now naruto fans....
Tom, why don't we make POSTS *cost* points, rather than gaining 2 points? Make it cost 2 points each time you post, and if you're at negative, you can't post. That cuts down on useless chatter as each post of 'ya' or 'lol' will cost them, and if they never contribute elsewhere, say by uploading images, posting reviews, rating items, then they will effectively be shut up forcefully.
And make this point change retroactive. I know a few naruto kids that will be in for a big negative shock :)
And to top it off, starting a NEW thread costs 20 points. Only replying in existing thread will cost 2 points. edits are free.
posting in Listal Development will still GAIN 2 points though.
can I hear 'yay' or 'nay' on this suggestion from everyone?

I agree with some sort of point negotiation for what has gone on recently. It's not really fair that a lot of us have added content to this site and have higher rankings because of it but some others (quite possibly the naruto fans) have higher rankings because of postings that consist of lol, ya, hi, or some other one word posts.
If the point system ever begins to mean that the higher ranking users have any sort of authority, this may not mean much....

I'm not sure it would work...
Either nobody would post at all, or everyone would post in the Listal Development.

or perhaps another side-effect - they all start rating everything 1 just to rack up free points and THEN keep posting.
The more i think about it, i think all we can do is somehow segregate them from rest of general audience (give them their own area to chat in) or we kill groups for a few months until they all leave. I'm in favor of the first one.

I second Manling's idea. Showing posts for the groups that you've joined is a great way to filter out all that stupid chatter.

You guys are very creative! For some reason, though, I think a mainstream idea would work better.
Either:
--- We appoint some moderators,
--- Make some extra forums,
--- Or start banning certain Naruto profiles, if Tom has any way of telling that any of them are duplicates (I hate to keep bringing this up).
Or a combination. Those seem to work in forums in general, although I understand that Listal is a different sort of deal.
