removing messages in mail

It would be really nice to be able to delete some of those messages. It's taking me forever to load a page (when one doesn't have the highest internet speed), and I'd love to get rid of some of those messages that are just plain OLD, like 1 year old, and that the other person never bothered to answer.
Not everyone uses the Mail feature either...
Any way this would be possible?
