Tonight (10th of April 2009) and on the 11th and 12th at 9PM Red Dwarf: Back to Earth premiers on tv channel "DAVE"

I can't fucking wait for this to air! The show spanned from 1988 to 1999 before ending and there hasn't been anything from the cast since until now! Anyone unfamiliar with it has about 4 and a half hours to catch up with the series, it is an awesome sci fi comedy.

Whenever I spoke to people about it who weren't quite as enthusiastic about it as me, their main gripes were the shit special effects, the laugh track and the sometimes unprofessional slap dash way it was set up. Well this 3 parter seems to fix all that, it has no laugh track as it was filmed away from prying eyes. It is filmed with an as yet unused in uk television red light camera and it has its biggest ever budget, essentially making it a 3 part film. (Normally episodes are stand alone) I imagine you would need to know about the show to appreciate these 3 but hopefully it is genuinely funny and not just funny to the fans. The BBC never really gave Red Dwarf the budget and attention it deserved and now Dave has picked up the rights to do this they are going to town on it!

Are there any "Dwafers" out there who are looking forward to this?

I am very excited about this! I used to watch Red Dwarf obsessively years ago when my local PBS station played it. It's too bad the movie plans never worked out, but it might end up better for fans this way. There are talks of bringing the show back as a mini- or full series if the 3-part special does well:

So was this just the chance for everyone to have one last hurrah after eight series and 52 episodes?

"Not necessarily," says Barrie, without wanting to give away the series' ending. "I'm a little bit biased but I think this could be some of the best Red Dwarf we've ever done."

If this is true, this Red Dwarf mini-series could spark a full comeback for the show.

"I think that there's very much a feeling that this could be a new beginning," says Barrie excitedly. "Obviously there are a lot of ifs ad buts hanging around, but we all think it's going to be absolutely fantastic when it goes out.

"We all think this could be the start of something big - perhaps another mini-series, a film or just a series.

I'm in the US so I've no chance of catching it the night it first runs, but I'm sure someone will upload torrents in less than 24 hours after they air.

There's a new Doctor Who special this weekend, too, of course. Thank god for the internet!

Just watched it! Well the first episode anyhow. Its been a long time coming and the cast is looking a bit older. But its great to have an old favourite back. Budget doesn't matter if the script and acting is solid. The team are still not on earth yet, but it all kicks off in tomorrow's episode.

Its there if you want it robelanator, not sure if that breaks any unwritten rules, but if it does delete it once its served its purpose eh? hehe. I enjoyed it, though it felt odd without the laughter in the background, kind of left to much silence between the talking I guess? Normally they would be pausing for laughter and such but if no one in the room laughs out loud (my family tend to find things funny in silence) it feels really noticeable.
Other than that, this first ep felt like a scene setter, without it we wouldn't know what was going on in eps 2 and 3 but stand alone it ended on a really odd note, and felt like it ended really quickly and unexpectedly. The jokes were funny 9 times out of 10 but I think 2 and 3 will be where all the real jokes are at as there wasn't much happening to go off.

Thanks RB6K!

I watched the first two parts last night and I'm downloading the third today. So far I'm finding it pretty funny, but nowhere near as good as the old series. The first part started weak (ironing sneezes? meh), but got better as it went along. The second part was decent, but kind of middling. I'm hoping the last part wraps it up well, but it seems like they've got a lot of plot to pack into only 23 minutes. Oh well, as long as it's funny, who cares if the resolution makes any sense, right? ;)

Don't get your hopes up for the third part. Aye carumba.

Well, it wasn't terrible, but it certainly wasn't great. The Blade Runner homage was cute, but I was hoping there'd be some neat comedic spin on it rather than just a relatively straight re-creation. If Dave does commission a new series I hope it's a lot more clever than this was.

The new Doctor Who special was disappointing, too. Very formulaic.

What new Doctor Who special? I thought it was cancelled and replaced with the movie Pitch Black ;-) Although now I think about it, Vin Diesel did look a bit thin and hairy!

Very sad Red Dwarf wasn't better, could have been a blast!

I thought Doctor Who was a good episode, although I would watch David Tennant wash dishes for an hour. As for Red Dwarf, very disappointing...I remember it being a bit cleverer than that. I think the access to CGI may have made the writers a little lazy, their astoundingly low budget seemed to keep them on their feet before.

As a whole, I enjoyed the new Red Dwarf specials. Separately, they have little merits each.
The second episode in particular worried me dreadfully. The story was going no-where and I was stoney-faced the entire time. Thankfully the third swooped in and redeemed the specials. That's my humble opinion, of course.

I feel the episodes should only be judged as a whole, not separately.

The Red Dwarf special just felt like a missed opportunity to me. With all the years Doug Naylor has been kicking around ideas for a film or relaunch of the series, I'd have thought they'd come up with a killer script, something to rival the best of the Red Dwarf episodes. Guess not. :(

As for Who: I love Tennant, too, but there are only so many times I can watch him run through the same plot.

"The Doctor and a group of bewildered innocents find themselves trapped with certain death quickly approaching, but at the last minute (and after a lot of running) the Doctor uses technobabble to save the day!"

Maybe Who hasn't used this formula as much as I seem to think, but I'm particularly jaded with it because the many incarnations of Star Trek used variations on that theme way too much.

But, hey, as long as Doctor Who doesn't start doing "oh no, we're trapped in the holodeck and the safeties are off!" episodes I'll continue to watch faithfully.

Though the constant re-appearance of the Daleks and Cybermen are starting to get a little Borg-ish, in that seeing them defeated over and over again every series kinda takes the terror out of 'em.

I saw it and compared to the old stuff it was lacking horribly. They've had quite a long time to come up with something unbelievably good.
I guess the era might well be over.

I thought Dr Who was a lot better than I had expected it to be but we only have one more DT episode before we get Emo Mcqueerson playing him instead. It takes the piss that the worst Dr Who writer of all time gets to work with Ecclestone and Tenant, and then FINALLY fucks off and leaves it to the talented and we wind up with someone completely unsuitable looking for the role which means the writers have to work 100 times harder to make it good. For those who don't know the guy who writes it now is responsible for pretty much all the superb episodes of the new series'

Red Dwarf as a whole was alright, has a lot of room to do better and some bits made me sad that it wasn't better. Some jokes even made me :| I was still glad to see it on the tele, and hope it gets picked up again for at least another couple of seasons, with vast improvements to the comedy of course.

I asked ol' Norman Lovett on his MySpace about the new specials.
He said they were disappointing on several levels and he was glad he was not involved.
Strong words!!

He sounds bitter to me!! I guess he wasn't asked to take part in it. Norman Lovett would attend the opening of an envelope if there was a chance he might get paid.

(That doesn't mean to say his opinion isn't right, I am not defending the episodes, they were alright not great, I am merely saying that he is clearly bitter.)

(lol nice on rb6k)
He might well be bitter I think it's quite sad that he wasn't asked to take part.

It is suprising, considering he could have probably come out with quite a few lines that would have added another dimension to the episodes, sometimes he is the funniest character in the eps! They obviously decided he wasn't needed, or asked him and he said no for whatever reason.

When I met him he kept on about how old they all were and seemed very against the whole thing anyway, that was over a year and a half ago so I dont know wether he knew about this then or what, but they gave no hints that there was more to come they just said it had been great doing it and they wouldn't say no to doing more.
