Recommendations Not Working

ProzakPaul 18 years, 5 months ago at Dec 3 2:58 -
I just signed up here, and I think this place has a lot of potential, but the recommendations deal is just awful. I've already rated quite a few items, but I still seem to be getting completely random, shot-in-the-dark recommendations. On top of that, I keep getting suggested the same items after I've checked "not interested", for some titles it happens every time I reload the rec's.
For me, a site like this is completely useless unless it actually learns from the user's input and adapts to each individuals' tastes. Without that intelligence, the whole 'social network' thing just turns into an impersonal grocery list of stuff I own.
Anyway, that's what I think needs improvement. With some work, this could really be a great site.

well i dont use the recommended movies features much, i prefer to see how others rate and review movies and use that aspect of the 'social network' to see what may be good, but i did just try it and didnt get any that are on my lists, including (not interested) items, but I will admit that the reoommended list isnt exactly the best at the moment.

But keep in mind this site is in very heavy development at the moment, and Tom, the admin/creator of this site, has mentioned he has in his to-do-list to improve the reocmmendations and to improve discovery of new movies in general. In fact, the actors and ratings of favorite actors/directors was just introduced in the past week and a half. It is crucial as once people start rating actors as well as directors and movies, it gives a lot more variables to be able to generate movies you'd like. For example, if you rate Johnny Depp as a 10, and Nicholas Cage as a 2, it might be more likely to recommend a Depp movie then a Cage movie. Its not how it works right now, but as i mentioned, ratings for actors just started recently, so theres not enough ratings/data to be able to tweak the recommendations at the moment.

Hope you enjoy the site, and thanks for the feedback. Tom is very good at taking everyone's suggestions seriously.

Which items are you getting recommended again when you clicked not interested?

Just noticed that prelude posted a few seconds before me, as he mentioned I've got plans to offer additional ways of getting movie recommendations and maybe improve the current system.

I think there may be a problem currently with the system as I do seem to get worse recommendations than I did before.

The whole recommendations thing in general is a huge area, some people have spend years researching this stuff, netflix recently offered a $1 million reward for improving it's recommendations for example.

And if You Liked the Movie, a Netflix Contest May Reward You Handsomely

Thats why I've been recently focusing on easier things to implement such as actor/artist profiles.

I've made some changes and fixed the not interested thing, also the recommendations were not ordered properly (the best ones were at the bottom or random order).

They seem better now but I would be interested in options of the quality.

its made a difference. The recommendations list looks a bit more accurate. Here's a rough breakdown:

Out of 50 recommended movies:

21 movies that I've already seen and enjoyed, but aren't on my list yet. (i'd say 6 out of 10 stars or higher)

10 movies that I've heard of and seem interesting, but I've never seen yet.

about 3 movies i've heard of, but I can't stand so I'll pass. (5 out of 10 or less)

and the rest, about 16, are movies i've never heard of, so i'd have to look them up for reviews and ratings from others to see if they'd interest me.
