Rating System / Earning Points

jadarite 11 years, 10 months ago at Jul 29 10:20 -
I need to do some brotherly cleanup. Recently sites like Wakoopa which does/did similar recording (with programs instead of media content) are closing. So, I need to know how reliable this site will be in the future. So far, I am quite happy my account is still going and due to recent comments, I have been visiting it more often. I am not an active user, so I hope I am not perceived as some spammer due to my rating system. Let's keep this thread away from that and more on the site's system as it pertains to earning points.

My suggestion is to reward members who rate a movie (or anything else) higher. The reason is someone who finds a good movie should be given a higher priority than those who rate a movie as bad. Either they are doing it because they want more points or at best they are warning us of a bad movie. However, if you search top rated movies, that would never show up. What's useful are the movies which have a high rating.

Let's take some examples. I don't like the Batman or Transformer movies. I grew up with the Transformer cartoon series in the 80's and watched the Burt Ward Batman tv episodes. So, for me, nothing is going compare to the classics (make a new movie tomorrow, I STILL WON'T LIKE IT). I shouldn't be accused of spamming current movies because of my viewpoint, and at the same time people who think my low rating of these kind of movies is bad shouldn't feel like the low ratings hinder the quality of the rating system on this site.

So, how about rewarding those who value the movie more? Then, spamming wouldn't be based on rating any movie, but rating movies high. I don't know if this is already in the system, but it was just an idea because I see the possibility my account will be closed due to me giving movies I haven't watched a low rating. Nothing has actually happened, but with recent comments I see it as a possible concern.

If Listal has a problem with the way I rate movies, they are free to close my account. However, I do like brothers.

Your account won't be closed because you're rating movies that you haven't watched. It is not that serious but it is just plain annoying.

Your whole plan 'about rewarding those who value the movie more' ? It is rather ridiculous and won't work so I'm pretty sure it won't be used.

LOL, you will be my Listal stalker. No matter where I post, you are sure to show up and make a post against anything I do. If I want to stop war, you will say I am ridiculous. If I am feeding a homeless man, you will show up to tell me he will die in 3 days. Don't you have any other hobbies?

I would think promoting good movies would be more beneficial than promoting bad movies. Where is your convoluted logic why a negative rating is just as good as a positive one?

Since you are stalking me, I don't need to look for you. HA HA HA.

Why do you attack people (i know this is not the right word to use, but my english is failing me right now, and I can't think of anything better) when they state their opinion? Do you think maybe johan could've just been checking the forums, like I do, quite often, and saw a new post, and is not stalking you?

Anyway, I also agree with johanlefourbe. If people don't rate how they feel about a movie, how will we know which movies might be good or not? If I see a movie with a bad rating, I won't want to watch it, because logically, most people who have seen it would think it is bad, and have therefore rated it such. When people rate movies they haven't seen as bad, it gives a false view of what the movie is really like.

Also, if people get more points for rating movies high, "pointwhores", would just rate movies higher, wether they liked the movie or not. That way everything would get higher ratings, and the difference between the movies actually thought to be good, and the bad ones will get smaller. At best, the top rated movies would not change (the movies, which are now thought to be quite good, would stay top rated). If it did change, who's to say the movie's that would be top rated would be any good?

The way it is now, makes it as honest as it could possibly be

Rewarding people for rating items higher would lead to disingenuous star ratings.

johanlefourbe is THE MAN! All hail johanlefourbe, suckas!

@Pumpkinate, now, it's official, I love you man!

@jadarite, sorry, man, I'm not a stalker, I just like to argue and discuss opinions, that's what those forums are for. Martine pretty much developped in details why I think it wouldn't work (thanks, Martine!). Finally, Just take it easy, man... You propose an idea, no problem, but when it is rejected, you should accept it honorably and not make a fuss about it.

It makes absolutely no sense to get more points for liking a movie, as others have said that would just make people rate the movie better than they actually thought it was and that's not cool. Hate reviews are annoying but everyone is entitled to their own opinion and if they hated a movie they should feel free to express that.

As it stands people have trouble believing that I like The Spirit. If we begin rewarding people for assigning higher ratings, there's just no way anyone would take me seriously.

Why would you rate a movie you've never seen? That is ridiculous. You are skewing the rating system. It's just as bad as extreme fans rating movies 'ten', no matter how good/bad a movie might be.

I agree with the others, that points for rating movies good would lead to spamming and lowering the validity of the site.

@jadarite
Sorry but I wouldn't agree with rewarding more points for higher ratings, because it would bring users to give higher ratings even when not deserved!

BTW, if you want to help people find good movies, you can add them to your Favorite list, or to your Custom Lists (which gives you points), or Recommend them to your Contacts!
