Rankings

johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 13:57 -
Not that I really mind but have the rankings disappeared with this new website version? I was able to find my points but not the ranking.
DuckNation 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 14:00 -
your points can be located on your profile or here www.listal.com/members/view/1/?sortby=points-desc
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 22 14:20 -
Nice! I wasn't able to find this :)

Yes the rankings have been removed
browser 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 23 17:45 -
I wouldn't mind if the rankings made a comeback. I thought they were fun.

If not that could we have some sort of levels system?

It's true, while the rankings aren't why we are here, they are a fun aspect of the site. Hopefully it creates some friendly competitiveness; but if they were removed because it caused issues then I understand.
TrekMedic 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 24 2:41 -
Y'know, I kind of like Browser's suggestion. Other sites have levels like "newbie" through "master," etc. based on some form of activity criteria. I can get behind that!
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 24 10:41 -
I didn't even notice that there was already a thread about the subject ( www.listal.com/topic/ranking-472606 )

Sorry for creating another unnecessary thread about this...

Anyway, it is quite unbelievable... For at least 1 or 2 years, many users were complaining about the ranking system, that it was the main reason that people were putting so much random sh*t on the website. Now, it has been removed and we get some complaints that it is gone...

Personally, I was always been in favor of the points system because I always thought that it was what was making this website fun to me and it was the main reason I spent so much here trying to improve my 'score'.

At the end of the day, I think it was a good move to remove the rankings. This way, we can see if the quality of the website is improved and if the 'point-whores' stay away.

In fact, everything (points and rankings) is still there but it's much less obvious which is a very nice approach and, eventually, if you are really interested by the rankings, you can just use the link provided by Ducknation : www.listal.com/members/view/1/?sortby=points-desc

by the way, if the ranking is so important to you, you can do like dereko and add it manually on your profile.

see dereko's profile : dereko.listal.com/

@johan, I have my rank posted as well (linked to the sorting)
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 24 13:34 -
@TrekMedic,

I thought about the doing the same thing but I think I won't do it for the time being but I could change my mind at some point.

Still, it could be fun if everybody would add it back like you ;)
browser 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 26 10:08 -
@johanlefourbe I haven't been here all that long so didn't know about the ranking controversy! I guess there is always a fine balance of rewarding useful additions and coping with spamming for points.

I suppose the difficulty for users is knowing what will be of interest to others.

:)

Even the list of rankings, that you guys have posted in here has been taken down.
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 28 7:09 -
Indeed, it seems that the rankings have been completely removed.

However, if you really want to know your ranking, you can always use my list : www.listal.com/list/top-113-most-influential-listal

and, if you want it to be visible on your profile, you could had something like this on your profile somewhere :

'Ranking : 19'

Finally, if you are really hardcore concerning this matter, I can give you the rights to this list so you can keep your profile up to date whenever you want. I would suggest to only update your own account to avoid pissing other people off but if you want to update their profile as well, why not? Of course, in case of abuse, I would remove those rights immediately.

The nice thing about this is that, if you want your ranking to be up to date, you don't have to wait for some random update, you can do it whenever you feel like it.

Finally, if you want to be added to the rankings, make sure you reach at least 450 000 points, send me a message and I will had you to the list.

Let's see how it goes and let me know your thoughts about this!

If you are attempting to continue a ranking system even though it has been removed, may I request that my wife and I are not on the list. We have both dropped significantly anyway, since we have slimmed down our accounts.... but I see no reason to go against Tom's wishes by trying to manufacture some form of ranking list. Perhaps this kind of idea could justify a removal of the points total altogether.
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 28 8:01 -
@Onion Jack, I understand your point of view on this and I think it was a right move from Tom to remove the ranking system.

I'm just giving this alternative for who might be interested but I will remove you as requested.
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 28 8:51 -
@Onion Jack,

You and your wife have been removed from the list as requested.

;)
TrekMedic 8 years, 7 months ago at Sep 28 18:16 -
@johan, good to see that you're keeping that list up. I'll change the link on my homepage to that instead of the community search that Tom eliminated.

I think johan's list is fun and interesting because you get to know a few facts about the most active users (if they chose to share such info).

I would change the list name, though. Let's rename it to: "The Usual Suspects". ;-)

As to rankings, I wouldn't want a comeback, but I would like something to replace the old system, like it happens on almost any other forum or online community. As it was discussed in other threads too, "Member since" and "Last activity" would be nice additions below the avatar. I also like tags along the lines of "Newbie", "Master" and so on, like TrekMedic said, based on activity, time spent on Listal, received votes too, combined through some secret algorithm!

If points and the rank system are works of the devil himself, might I suggest removal of the following:

"The points system is in place to give recognition to those who contribute to this site. Do not spam in order to get points, your account may be barred from the points system

The point allocations may be changed at anytime to fairly give credit to those who contribute the most.

If Listal believes that all bad things come from this points system then the above seems to contradict same.

Which is it boys and girls?

And has there been any noticeable improvement since the removal of the points system?

I, myself, liked the points system and am not ashamed/afraid to say as much and fight for it. It may not get far and people may like me less than they already do but I really don't care.
Iceviper 8 years, 7 months ago at Oct 6 12:11 -
Oh, and thanks for keeping your list active (johan). At least we're all not sheep and lemmings...

;D
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Oct 12 11:48 -
@Iceviper, personally, I have always been in favor of the points system but, for the last 2-3 years, there had been a lot of complains about this system so I think it is a good idea to try something else. However, you can't judge the impact of this change after just 1 month. My guess is that you should wait at least 6 months or even a whole year without the point system to see any results.

Well some members in favour of point system and some are not.
And apparently TOM listen to some peoples who are not in favour. I see no harm in point system as other peoples think.

@The O.P : And also i am completely supporting O.P's view. It would be intresting to see.
johanlefourbe 8 years, 7 months ago at Oct 12 15:28 -
@ORION, I think you're missing something here.

The point system has been here ever since this website started and, for the last 2-3 years, Tom has been basically ignoring all the complains against the points system. Now, he has made a decision, chosing the 'no-point' side and I think it's fair he finally listened to them after ignoring their complains for so long. On top of that, I'm curious to see the impact that it will have on the website.

Yes, let's wait and see how it goes.
Anyway, like I said, I'd love something else to replace the old system, like "Member since..." or equivalent information.
