Populate lists with new tag

Hi, new here, kudos for the site.

After I added some books awhile ago, I wanted to create a tag to a number of them but I didnt find a way to commit a new tag to multiple items. Am I missing something? Do I really have to enter manually a tag per item? Maybe that's the reason there's a "custom list" right?
