Just a general query from a little niggle schoosh.

How did the point allocation for every activity get assigned? As why is each one worth the amount they are?

Just by determining the time taken for actions and the value added to the site, a few of them are probably too low or too high of course.

Are they debateable?

If it is debateable then here's my take on what the point allocation should be for each action. Though this is in no way a criticism of the current way things are done. In my view the points increases for certain actions would encourage the interactive element of the site.

Filling in profile information 50
I'd keep this as it is.

Friends signed up via signup link 200
Again no change.

Favorite lists with at least 10 items 100
No change

Other custom lists with at least 10 items 50
I'd change this to 200 to reflect that extra bit of research & effort creating a custom list involves.

Rating items 3
No channge

Tagging items 3
Change to 5 as again a bit more effort requd than simply rating plus a tagged item is so much more social in that it widens it's viewability.

Posting in the forums (except random chat and anime) 4
Change to 5 to relect the social nature of using the forum.

Posting a review 50
Change to 100 (but increase the requd word count) to encourage reviews & to reflect the ffort that goes into doing them.

Posting pictures 10
No change.

Uploading videos 50
No change.

Adding videos from youtube 10
No change.

Receiving votes
Increase to 5 possibly 10. To encourage interaction between members & to reflect contributions.

I was gonna wait for Tom to reply but seeing as I don't wanna be left on a whim.

As escafeld said, most allocations are fine as they are. Maybe the totals as they are could remain the same with their current point allocations and then with a new points system it could just have a seperate column which is added together to get the User Total. That way what you earned, you keep.

Custom Lists are usually a crock anyway. 200 is way too much for just making a 10 item list. If there was a way to detect a 50 word note with added pics, that would be worthy of a 200 point allocation. GemLil's thread consisting of worthy 50+ Custom Lists should all be allocated 200 as opposed to the current 50.

Tags are fine as they are. Maybe 5 for a 'new tag' that hasn't been added to that item before but it should be 3 for every repeated tag. Do we get tag points when we tag Actors/Directors? I've never actually checked.

The Review Word Count malark. I cannot stress enough how much this should be thrown in. 200 word min. for points is a MUST! 100 points is worthy then.

Votes should definitely be upped (10 sounds good) aswell as Forum Posts (5 sounds good also).

Do Forum posts that get deleted get minus'd from your points? As I feel this should be implimented otherwise! Some kid started a thread and posting in it 100 odd times before a Mod swung in an anihilated him! I know the threads are hidden from regular user view but they are still there lurking and assigning points to disreputable wretches.

Possible additions:
Adding Items - I know this was a contraversy over a year ago b ut I feel there should be some benefit from adding to the site. Now I don't know the specs for the Listal DB but is it able to sustain people adding stuff even if they haven't seen/watched it? I only add new releases or my own Watched Movies that aren't on the database but I feel its adding to the site as a whole. 3 Points for adding a new item if its not too much for the DB to handle?

Seems like it could be really good.
But what if some idiot re-adds something after the merge?

i don't see much need for changing points, but i'd like to see 0.5 points for every word in a review (with a minimum of 100), so brilliant and extensive reviews like the ones from PvtCaboose91 get honored properly. also i'd like to see votes get upped to about 10-15 points.

That is encouraging people to drivel on if its per word! I've seen some corkers on this site that go on for 500 words or more and it isn't enlightening or even well written.

really? any examples? i really can't imagine anyone babbling useless stuff for some pages. i think it would encourage people to sit down and take the time to write a decent review. also, i think it's a difference if you write a review that barely fulfills the let's say 200 word minimum or a 1000 word dissertation. and the points should reflect this in my opinion.

But what if they write an inarticulate load of random words that have absoloutly no connection?
Hell they could just copy words from an encyclopedia brittanica.

they can this now too. there are so many items here, you could make millions of points by doing it. why doesn't anyone? i think we are talking here about _theoretical_ abuse, which could be controlled very easily.

Dont like that 0.5 point per word thing at all. Reviews should have a word minimum and be done with it. A long review doesnt necessarily mean its a good one. I personally favour a concise yet informative review .

without judging the quality (we don't do this with other point-factors either), longer review = more effort = more points in my opinion.

It's definitely debateable, I think adding points for list items with notes would be good idea. I think adding extra points for long reviews would be good as well.

I'm glad Tom has a sense of humour.

I think we should all get points for being good sports ROFL! I reckon there should be general consensus from the big shots though. I want to know more about your perception of points Tom.

I was being serious :)

I agree with GemLil. A long review doesn't make a good review. Is there a way to get something like "bonus" points if you get so many votes for your review, meaning it's a good one? I hate the idea of rewarding for length.
Moderator
Seaworth 16 years, 11 months ago at May 31 11:16 -
That won't work! You get points for votes anyway! Length of reviews actually means you took the time to think about writing it. Effort is what we are looking for!

The votes idea is easy for corruption anyway. Seeing as some members have multiple accounts!

GemLil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 31 11:38 -
Here-here Munky. If you were to impliment a length points reward, then please just set it at a word count, i.e 50 points from say 150-500 words, 100 points for 500 words plus, not 0.5 per word thing.

Lists with added content take ages, the html code, the finding, uploading and transfering of pictures. In one of my lists I have links to reviews on the subject, thumbnail photos which link to bigger versions and thumnail images which link to video content. Probably took me longer to make that, and mine and GB's Disney lists, than it did to make a douzen or more normal lists. These kind of lists mark an attention to detail, a worrying obsession that should be rewarded or given to a psychiatrists. Not sure how you would implement a system to locate lists with custom content. Also lists with a 50 or 100 plus content shoud be rewarded.

5-10 points for each item with a note seems reasonable.
