Planned features - Updated 12 April 2007

These features are planned to be implement soon (within a few weeks) There are many other features planned of course but not in the short term, these are not listed here as there is no clear idea of when these might be completed.

High priority less than 1 month - (In no particular order)

- Edit product pages (edit artists, directors, release date etc...)

- Add new releases, movies now showing, tv shows now airing etc..

- Add moderator functions e.g. delete image, delete thread, delete video etc...

- Report messages, forum threads

Medium priority

- Add digg style site suggestions system, good ideas will be promoted. Will be good to see interest in different ideas.

- Tag information page users who use this tag, tags which have been used with this tag.

- Seperate editions into 1 item but still allow people to choose which edition they own, combined editions will share social data and reviews/ratings. Some maybe done automatically.

- Allowing adding of all kind of products and items, most likely under a 'other' tab (not decided yet)

- Delete messages

- Alter navigation menu and add more 'explore' sections like video.

- Profile customization (background color and module styles?), more stuff on the profile page and choice of what you can put on it.

- Photos, allow adding of photos/picture for members (the code is already done for products so it's easy to add)

- Add tv section, currently people have been listing tv shows in the movies section, I think a tv section would nicely complete the entertainment theme of this site.

- Better main area page, more stats, remove tag clouds for non tag items, add more info

- director, actor, artist and author pages - Allow adding of photos, see fans of this person, see top rated products, see most collected products, see top tags etc...

- Product page redesign - See friends ratings, see ratings breakdown

- Add another view like 'grid view' but in the style of the recommended section.

- Videos - Allow uploading of videos for products, e.g. movies and game trailers and music videos

- Profile page view compatibility, generate compatibility on the fly, compare ratings, rate things they have rated, view recommendations.

- Add tv section, currently people have been listing tv shows in the movies section, I think a tv section would nicely complete the entertainment theme of this site.

I've been thinking about this as I've been adding 'watched' movies. Good idea. There's plenty of stuff that fits into Dvd, that doesn't fit into Movies.

I look forward to being able to edit products (I've noticed that custom adding tends to loose actors, directors, etc... sometimes). I've got plenty of stuff that could use some touch up.

I think I know what you're talking about with 'see previous versions'. Would that be rigged like 'add product image' where you make one version 'primary' or just an audit/history trail?

Can "generally improve the site" include being able to search members by username (unless I've been thick and somehow just managed to miss it)? Would come in handy if you're after a particular person. So to speak.

Those are good ideas Tom, I can't wait to add color to my profile.

Personally, I like these three the best, but they are all great. I can't wait for all these improvements and I just want to say Thank You! for all your hard work and for making this site as great as it is (and will be). For someone like me who loves to make lists of everything it is a great help and is much better than piles of notebooks. *lol*

Just saw the 'Tag matches found'. I like it. Of course I'd say about 1% off all entries are tagged (I'm exagerating, but not by much), so its usefulness is limited for now. Cool nonetheless.

Probably because, if you have a lot of items to tag with the same thing, it takes an age. Even with copy and paste. I'm sure having a drop-down list of tags you can add by checking the boxes next to your items (similar to the way in which items can be added to custom lists) would encourage more people to tag more of their items. But I think Tom has previously said something of this nature is something he's looking to do, hasn't he?

That argument holds up if your importing several hundred (or more) items. I imported in over a thousand dvds and I had them tagged in two or three days. For everything else I did the regular 'add item' which is what I think a majority of people are using. All you have to do is stop adding for a few minutes to tag what you've added. It doesn't take that long or that much effort. Most people either don't understand tagging or can't be bothered, even for a trivial amount of entries. Something similar to the way del.ici.ous does their tagging might be better than drop-downs though. Time will tell.

(I was much less in a hurry to do ratings even thought that's really easy)

All I know is that, to tag several hundred books and DVDs with multiple tags has took me at least a working week (though not in consecutive days) and that, for what it is, this is actually quite a long time and could be much faster. I don't know anything about del.ici.ous - how do they do their tagging? - but suggested the manner of tagging that I did because it'd be much faster than what we have now. Why take a few days to do something quite trivial, when it could be done in minutes?

By drop-downs, I meant that maybe we could have a menu at the bottom of the page, with tags we've already used. So that we can add any tag we've used previously to multiple items by checking each item's select box and picking the tab we want. Pretty much like we can make custom lists from the items we already have. I don't mean that this should *replace* the tagging method we currently have, but it would certainly complement it and make it more efficient. I'm sure there are indeed better ways, though.

Best way to implement tagging is how blinklist.com does it: auto-type. You hit letter 'a' and a pop-up list appears, navigatable by keyboard, to quickly select 'action' or 'adventure', etc. It only uses your previously entered tags. Also make a mini-box with all tags appear below, and make it mouse selectable. You have to make it completely easy to add tags, or the lazy common folk just simply wont do it.

I think you should be careful with this one. It might open up too much potential for lawsuit-happy entertainment lawyers. Plus you'd have to spend lots of resources away from site development and into policing uploads, so people dont upload innapproriate videos, or their own trailers that are not copyrighted. Maybe only allowing links to official movie trailers might be safer?

Although site layout is nice, it could use improvements in some parts of navigating, so I look forward to seeing these changes.

problem: if I want to see most popular comedies, I click on COMEDY tag, but it shows movies based on total number of tracks, not total number of comedy tags. I think it would make more sense to list movies tagged as 'comedy' in order of highest number of 'comedy' tags, not by overall popularity.

case in point, click on COMEDY tag, and notice this:

#1 - Pirates of carribean, most popular movie in list, tagged as comedy 8 times.

#2 - Forrest Gump, tagged as comedy 10 times.

#3 - Fight Club, tagged as comedy once.

now how does Fight Club become #3 in COMEDY list? sure, its a very popular movie, but only one person tagged it as comedy (for whatever weird reason, lol) so shouldn't every movie with more than 1 tag be listed above Fight Club?

And then Napoleon Dynamite, hilarious comedy, has 11 tags for it, yet its found on page 5.

So i dont know if its planned to be changed, but click on tags should sort by highest number of tags, and if they're tied, use the overall popularity as tie-breaker.

And obviously, it would be better if people started tagging. Maybe its need to be done easier, or push people to tag at least ONE tag per movie? its sad that in first five pages of comedy tag, i think the highest number of tags was 13. Spaceballs. Which should be listed #1 in comedy tag by default. ;)

to further that discussion, what if a movie has only 11 views, but all 11 tagged it as comedy (very loyal following). Should it be listed above a very popular movie, say 200 views, but only 10 comedy tags? probably not.

So i thought, what about sorting it based on an algorith, say popularity x tag hits x average user rating? That way, popularity of movies is still a major role, but it does get affect by how many tags it has in comedy, and also average user rating. Then only the cream of the crop movies will be displayed first, when a user clicks on comedy tag.

The TV update is great! Thanks for adding it. I really wanted to be able to add certain shows, like "Heroes," and now I can.

Some TV shows aren't showing up, though, like "Boston Legal."

I would also like to see a droplist of tags, or maybe something like how del.icio.us does tags.

Any chance of adding a TV feature where we can keep track of episodes of a certain TV show that we've watched?

The tv area doesn't have everything in it yet but you can always add things if you know the imdb number.

I may add season/episode information if there is demand/usage of the tv section in the future.

does "Edit Product pages" mean we can fix the mistakes we find for each product. I've found a few, that although not all that large, are goddamn annoying.

I am for it. You seem to get infomration from imdb for this, they have episode listings now. Perhaps it would be possible to access information for DVD casts and things from imdb instead of amazon when a future edit of titles option my be implemented. In cases of some of my Soctor Who DVDs, listings of the prisode cast would be superior than listing of the complete series cast as many of those that appear are not listed. A similar advantage could be used with boxsets containing multiple films such as a 50 Mystery movie collection from Treeline I just purchased.

The one (hopefully easy) feature I'd love is to have is a way to transfer ticked items from 'DVDs' section to 'Movies' section. I've put all my favorite flicks in the DVDs section when Movies didn't work too well and now I want them in the neater 'Movies' section without having to do this by hand.

that's a good suggestion, Stu. Since DVD and Movie are so similar, it would be nice to transfer one to the other.

Another 'annoyance' I found it trying to delete an item from my list. Tom recently ( a few weeks ago) added the 'watched, want to watched, or not interested' option right in movie info page, which makes it easy to change its status, but if I want to delete it from my list, say i sell a movie or lose it somewhere or give it away, I have to go to list mode and hunt for it, then press check box, then go to bottom of page and choose delete. This is a major interface faux-pas, IMO. Not to mention, if you have 600+ movies, even simply finding the movie would take forever. Only way i found is to search for movie, but click on MINE instead of ALL when performing search, and then you can click the checkbox and choose DELETE action.

How's about an option to automatically search for music by artist, movie by director or actor, book by author and so on, including studio. That is in the dropdown menu that says movies, music, dvds, video games etx..., kind of a sub search option presented with a --artist under the music scroll and so on. The same for favorites could be good, which by the by does not function well on Firefox for me as they either do not get added or clear the list entirely but IE7.0 seems to work fine with it.

I'm loving all the additions to the site...one thing that continues to annoy me, however, is the odd way that ownership seems to be separated from viewership. (I'm mostly looking at the DVD/book sections in my examples, because that's what I've used the most.) I added a book to the "owned" section a long time ago when I bought it. I just finished reading it, so I went to the page for the book, and clicked on "read," and it took it out of my "owned" section and put it in the "read" section--but I obviously still own it. In fact, if I go through the "owned" section in the list view, you can mark them "read," "reading," or "unread," but marking them "read" doesn't put them into the "read" SECTION. As far as I can tell, to add the book to the "read" section, you have to go through the whole process of adding it from the search bar just as you did when you added it to the "owned" section. On the list page, you can check items and MOVE them to the "read" section, but there ought to be a way to COPY them, since "own" and "read" are not mutually exclusive. Hopefully, I'm just unaware of a fundamental way of manipulating the items.

I'm really looking forward to the ways of dealing with multiple editions you mention, as well! That's something that has plagued every book-related site I've ever used...if you can fix it, Listal will have my everlasting love. :)

This will probably now help others understand now what I've been saying about this feature, since I've confused a handful of members about this idea. Nothing extreme. Just a simple list of colors to choose from so you can have a different color scheme randomly.

Question: will the 'edit product page' include adding/removing actors from the cast list, and re-ordering them as well?

And one part that is still far from ideal in its current state is 'tagging', yet its not mentioned in upcoming changes list. I thought this was going to be addressed at some point? There was discussion about public and private tags, as well as perhaps auto-complete tags as you type them.

If the altering of cast orders is included in editing perhaps it could be in the format of other ordering pages (friends, lists), and thus be draggable for easy use. ;)

Um, how do I delete myself from Listal? It's turned out not to be my cup of tea - all I have so far is invitations to visit casinos and offers of marriage from Russian girls who haven't read that I'm gay.

I want to delete all my data as well as stop getting the notifications. I realise I could just turn off the notifications, but removing yourself from the site seems like fairly basic functionality and I'm suprised its either missing or so well hidden.
