Paul MacCartney - best singer - wtf???

I was flicking through some mag - possibly Rolling Stone or Mojo and they had a list of the 100 greatest singers of all time - and Macca is number 1 - wtf? - He may have been a great song writer (I actually think he was a LOT better than Lennon) but as a singer passable at best

Yes. That man could never sing, but then I just remembered that The Beatles are overrated anyway.

Are you people serious?
Paul McCartney (spell it right) did a great job singing half of the Beatles more famous numbers. He was responsible in the song writing with John Lennon for the most part (Lennon/McCartney dominated most song writing credits after 1966). As for his singing, have you listened to any of the Beatles albums where he sings most of the numbers? It's not the greatest singing in the world but it's truly better than most of the vocals of bands I have reviewed.
Other than that, he was also an amazing bass player. Easily one of the best all time.
If you're going to call The Beatles "overrated" at least show something backing up a heavy claim like that. The only band in the entire 60's that could go toe to toe with them was Hendrix's group.
Every great rock band in the 60's was chasing The Beatles success and their sound, and I will give you many proofs of that:
The whole psychedelic guitar heavy rock sound was inspired by Sgt Peppers (Cream, Hendrix, The Who, Bowie, early Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd). Even before that, The Rolling Stones spent most of their early years chasing the Beatles like crazy, always a step behind what made them the top dog. Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder were heavily influenced by the song writing of The Beatles and both of those are two of the most celebrated song writers in history. Elton John, The Kinks, The Beach Boys, King Crimson and The Byrds are other solid examples that were heavily influenced by The Beatles and followed their sound very closely. This is just off top of my head. If I wanted to list them all, it would turn into a huge list, cause just about every great rock band in the 60's was influenced by the Beatles in one way or another.
Normally I would agree that Rolling Stone Magazine sucks ass (and I have bashed them a lot before) but I will call out and counter any argument against The Beatles.

Bolshevik Gary - no one could seriously deny the influence of the Beatles BUT Macca wasnt a great singer - he was effective

I agree wholeheartedly with what BG has said. The Beatles will, most likely, go down in history as the greatest band of all time. As far as McCartney's singing, he wasn't a great singer but he was good and he was a better singer than the other three in the band. I'd actually rank Lennon as the third best, behind Harrison, with Ringo last.
