The Oscars, 2011: Your biggest surprise?

For me it seems so far that the King's Speech, with so many nominations, is getting a little behind, mostly in technical categories (which Inception is taking with not much surprise)

In the end it ended up taking the most important oscars, Actor, Director and Movie, so it was the greatest winner.
I guess True Grit was the loser tonight, 10 nomination, no award =/ It was not one of my faves, though.

I thought Inception could have gone with the best original score. TSN had a good one, but it didn't stay with me like Inception's did. That Hanz Zimmer really knows how to get me, I guess.

Inception was my favorite in Score and Art Direction as well

I really thought The Social Network would take home more awards, but I'm glad to see The King's Speech triumph over it since it's definitely the better film. I was most surprised by the pick for animated short (I thought for sure Pixar had that locked up too) and Melissa Leo winning Supporting Actress. Of the 5 nominees for Supporting Actress I was the least impressed by her performance.

I was afraid Social Network would run away with things too, but then began to consider The King's Speech's growing hype and recognition, and the average age of the Academy voters.
Even though Natalie Portman tore through every award leading up to the Oscars I still had a sneaking feeling that Anette Benning would win. So I guess that's my biggest surprise in an Oscar night short on surprises.
Oh, but if you told the 14-year old version of myself that Trent Reznor would one day stand on stage with an Oscar in his hand there's just no way in hell I would've believed you. That to me is easily the biggest surprise of the night...
Not because he didn't deserve it (The score for Social Network was easily the most impressive, original, and striking thing about the film) but just in the grand scheme of things.

The only surprises for me was that Inception didn't get original screenplay and score. Beside that, it was pretty predictable. Kirk Douglas stole the show, tough.

There were not any surprises last night unfortunately. It was too much of another predictable Oscar show. I want to see some surprises next year, like the favorites do not walk away with all the prizes and someone is surprised that they have won the Oscar.

Well, how surprised can you be when you're nominated?
Especially in years like this, where most of the underdogs where still deserving of the award.

Agreed. I didn't watch the show, but had I seen that I think it would've blown my mind. I have to laugh that he's now got a Golden Globe & Oscar among his awards now...never would've expected it.

I thought the biggest upsets were Exit Through the Gift Shop NOT winning Best Documentary, Fincher failing to win Best Director, and Film Editing going to Social Network when 127 Hours and Black Swan definitely had much better editing and relied on editing more or less to tell those stories successfully.
