Online Status

The Cineast 16 years, 7 months ago at Sep 30 5:34 -
I just thought I would suggest a pretty cool idea. What if you added an online or offline icon on each persons profile, maybe even what they are doing at the time, for example it says "online" writing a review or something like that, or just the online icon without what they are doing, that would be cool too.

Thanks Tom

It's cool as long as there's an option to disable it or appear invisible. I've never been a fan of people knowing if I'm online or not.

Yeah, having an option to have it or not would be good too. I would just like to know whether my friends are online or not. It just seems convenient.

Why not download an instant messenger and add your friends to it?

UA, you blow me away with your wisdom, sometimes... ;-)

Well Unholy Alliance, for one thing instant messenger has nothing to do with Listal. Of course anyone can get instant messaging, but I am talking about having an online status on Listal! I did not make a thread on instant messaging. and by the way you cannot see what your friends are doing in instant messenging. Gosh, why do you even ask such a stupid question?

Well MOOOOVVVIIIIEEEEEMMMMMAAAAAAAANNNNNNNNNNN!!!!! Why do you feel the need to stalk your friends activites on Listal then? I thought the 'Follow' option was weird and useful enough but it serves its purpose of telling you what your friends have been doing. I'm just saying there are easier tools to find out whether people are online than wasting Tom's time with something that as far as I can see won't benefit the website. ESPECIALLY when you make it optional.

I suggested an online option months ago but that was in retaliation to the hundreds of "Is any1 online?" threads. Thats over now and so I don't see why we should worry about who is online. Also, I personally don't feel the need to know where people are at any given moment. Let them reply in their own time. If these people were your genuine friends, then you'd at least have their email address to contact them (or add them to an instant messenger!). Plus, the Private Messaging system works fine to leave someone a message.

Did everyone else know that it is illegal to talk about Listal on IM? I had no idea.

I have been meaning to add it, I don't think it's unusual feature to request since most forums on the internet have some kind of who is online feature. There will be an option to disable it of course.

How would it work given that listal doesn't ever log you off when you close your browser?

In the mean time I think we should be more concerned with adding a hack that prevents people voting for movies that SUCK with a 10 out of 10!

Facebook added a 'who's online' option to enable instant chat, and pretty much EVERYONE on my list turns it off and never chats on there.

Just dont want too much resources to be devoted to enable this feature, and then have everyone shutting it off anyways. I know myself, even as a moderator, I'd leave it off just so I don't get bugged by people ;)

I second this 'feature' :)

I was just an idea, and plus how am I going to know when to message people. They could be offline at the time. This perk could be very useful. I don't see the problem with it. I guess it bugs you Unholy Alliance, but it is really not a big deal.

A hack to prevent people from rating movies that suck a 10 would be rather stupid considering movies you think suck might be enjoyed by others.

Getting back to the point, heres my opinions:

*Showing who is online would be a useful tool, with the ability to disable it of course. Your friends on Listal may not be people you want to talk to on an IM basis, but rather chat to about media and other things when the fancy takes you. (But, as alluded to above, a built in IM for the site as on Facebook would just be redundant. Sending messages is enough.)
*I disagree with showing exactly what people are doing, I think the follow option is enough for this and is a little stalkerish otherwise.

As Tom said, its pretty much a standard option across nearly every forum out there and does not have to be associated with IMing.

That sounds good tartan skirt. I don't find it stalkerish at all, I mean Xbox live has it, and that's what I was basing it off of.
