Online indicator

Devious Phenomenon 17 years ago at Jun 2 1:44 -
I don't really know, but is there anyway to know when someone is online? like you know how some sites have the red offline and the green online on the profiles to show whether they are on? Could we possibly get something like that so we know when the heck people are on???

I'd only vote for this if it was optional.

it wouldn't make much sense to make it optional, because this kind of system only has its's benefit if it's dependable. if every second user has it's indicator disabled it would become rather useless. on the other hand i don't see the use of an online indicator in Listal anyway.

I usually turn my computer on of a morning to check emails/Listal/Facebook and I usually leave the browser open if I go out/walk away from the desk so technically I'm not there/online.

My Facebook is always set to hide online status because I don't want people thinking I'm on there all day but I don't wanna leave my log-in details for easy access for anyone who might use my computer.

The main point of this addition when it was suggested was to stop all those wankers asking "Hoos online?" but seeing as they have been eradicated then as Bael says, it isn't necessary. I mean we have last activity log which should suffice.

well, i don't think it's something impossible to implement technically, as you could always be set to "idle" status after some time. but in my opinion an online indicator would only make sense if Listal had some kind of chat system. aside from that i can live well without it.

It'd certainly make communicating with other members about collaborative efforts and database management a lot less iffy. Sometimes I get replies immediately and sometimes it takes a couple days - if I could see whether the user is on at the time I'd have an idea when to check back for the response. This function'd be a great convenience for frequent use of the social networking aspect in conjunction with database management.

Blue's a better offline color than red.

Eh, I was just thinking it's a pain in the ass to come on and hope there is someone to chat to, wait 10 minutes, no one, wait another 20 miunutes, no one, and you have no clue if anyone is Online and just not posting in the threads so you need to PM them, OR if they Actually ARE NOT online

Just makes it easier to have discussions in my opinion, you know who's on, you know who your talking to, and you don't have to wait an hour for a reply

in my opinion the groups are not supposed for "chat". and as long as there is no chat on Listal, why bother for an online indicator? you don't have one for e-mail either. you'll have to wait for an hour, 10 hours or 2 months for a reply anyway, regardless of the online status of the person you are "talking" with.

But, some people like to DISCUSS, or else they lose their train of thought, which means I forget what my train of thought it when I am talking to someone and therefore am unable to continue the discussion any further, thus making the discussion quite possibly fall

Download a messenger Yama. I'm starting to side more with the Swiss on this issue. You wait for replies, you don't beg whose online to talk to you. Patience does come with age.

If the discussion topic is shit, it will fail anyway.

I've sometimes thought such a feature would be useful myself. Ability to see whether sent messages have been read by their recipients would be nice, too - that would address what Thilian was talking about, I think.

Messenger's are for chatting, most people who use them have the attention spans of Peas... I'd like to hold a discussion with someone who CAN actually think out of a paperbag, I'd also like to talk with them WHILE I have it on my mind, so I can discuss it better

And who said it would be used the way you stated?

I never said I'd look through to see who is online and PM them to talk, I said I wanted to CHECK online people to SEE if anyone is actually THERE who can HOLD a decent discussion about something...

lol wut?

Do you mean suggest all forms of chatting are inferior to "discussion." As far as I'm concerned the two go hand and hand. Online Indicators are useless for the reason you stated. If you really want to talk with people you think are chill you can just add them as a friend to your messenger as choice.
Otherwise it seems alright to send a message a day and wait for a reply the next day. It's part of the allure.

Maybe if you aren't getting "decent discussions" from your IMing buddies you need new ones.

For collaborative efforts perhaps you guys ought to have a set time, decided beforehand, to do things.
