Nudity/Sexual Pictures - Suggestion

oakstep 10 years, 9 months ago at Aug 8 5:33 -
This has been discussed already on the foruns. I was just thinking. Wouldn't it be a solution for the problem if the community could vote if the pictures follow the rules or not?

I mean, the report button continues and the pictures reported go to a list. The pictures on that list get voted by anyone willing to vote for a certain amount of time (if it's nude or if it's not) or until it reaches a certain amount of votes. The system to vote for nude-or-not would be like the one used to rate movies, in which it is showed one at the time automatically.

That way the moderators wouldn't have to deal with the huge amount of time it takes for them to analyzes all the pictures reported.

That system could be used along side the moderators work, like, the pictures that have 75% votes in either way (nude or not nude) don't get analyzed by the moderators. That one that are "troubled", or between 26% and 74%, in which the community didn't reach some kind of consensus, gets the moderators' attention.

That could work for other types of reported pictures too.

I would only agree if the vote was restricted to moderators and "trusted users", so to speak, who seem to care about Listal.

I agree with The O.P.

Any other system would be open to abuse, either by multiple accounts or gangs of friends working together to harass other members.

There are other reasons as to why nudity is not allowed aside from the fact that it bothers people such as not being classified as a porn or NSFW site. Therefore it doesn't really matter if the majority of the users on the site are "okay" with an image. It's still not allowed.

So what is the point of the mature filter?
Maggie 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 20 23:19 -
Lists can be mature even if they do not contain nudity. The mature filter on lists blocks out mature content of multiple varieties. For instance, members are allowed to make lists about porn stars, even if they're not allowed to post nude images of those porn stars. They can make lists about violence or whatnot in movies, or other themes along those lines. And we recently set a list to mature that was a list of women the guy wants to have sex with. Trashy, TMI, and not something I myself would allow, but it's Tom's site so whatever.
blissfull 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 23 3:29 -
I see. It is for when the theme is mature even if the content isn't.

You are aware that there is nudity on this website, though? I have reported some but there is more. I guess it must be impossible to check everything out.
Maggie 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 23 5:59 -
We're definitely aware. But there are not enough moderators to combat the level of rule breaking images on this site.
blissfull 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 23 18:32 -
It figures. At the same time, I don't agree with making a big deal out of nudity. My parents were very strict when it came to nudity. I don't necessarily think they were right. I have had this conversation with my girlfriend. She saw her parents naked. In her family, it was not such a big taboo as in mine. I think I would like to have this openness with my children and not make such a big fuss out of it. I am not in favour of overprotecting children.

Nowadays, they can have access to it easily anyway. Just write anything in your Google image search engine and you will always end up with nude pictures within the results even if you don't write any keyword like sex or porn or whatever. So we may as well educate them instead of trying to raise the shields.

As far as Listal is concerned, because it is not a porn website, I agree that anything overly sexual should not be found here. There are other websites for this. However, I think some nudity should be tolerated when it is not offensive.

For instance, if I were to create a new item for Femen, the ukrainian feminist activists made famous for demonstrating bare breasts and sometimes bare ass, would it make sense not to have any nudity in the pictures? I think not.

Or, as a matter of fact, when a supermodel does a nude photoshoot, why should it be banned when you can find the same picture on giant billboads, on the side of buses and in fashion magazines?

There are many other example where nudity would not be especially offense and quite legitimate. I am thinking of the movie industry (the mainstream movie industry, not the adult movie industry), contemporary theatre and dance, photography, bodypaint, etc...

Yes, good point actually! If I were to create a new item called bodypaint, would it be considered as nudity considering that they are covered in paint? Even so, is this something that needs to be banned?

I understand that you have to draw a line somewhere but should this rule be somewhat softened a little because as you point it out, the nudity rules as they stand are so strict that they are impossible to enforce.

You know, I do sympathize because I was a moderator on a torrent website for a while and I know how difficult it is to stand your ground and keep your integrity while making as many happy people as possible.

Anyway, just something to think about...

Nudity is relative. I don't see pictures of men with their breasts covered up. it's sexist.
blissfull 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 26 0:45 -
I have never understood this argument. First of all, men don't have breasts. Secondly, our chest is not associated to anything sexual.

There is nothing wrong in acknowledging a truth, which is that men and women's bodies are different.

That's beside the point anyway. The point is, should nudity (male and female) still be such a taboo in modern societies and where does Listal stand in the whole picture?
Maggie 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 26 9:08 -
Honestly if I had it my way, I'd side with you, CA. I'm fine with nudity so long as it's tasteful, and it really frustrates me when I'm adding pictures for a model and have to leave certain pieces of editorials out because they contain nudity, even if the nudity is well done. It'd be great if we could have tasteful nudity and just leave out the porn style stuff.

On the other hand, as you say, it's extremely easy to look up nudity -- which means it's not necessary to have it here, because there are plenty of other sites to look at that sort of thing if you're interested in it. It doesn't have to be on Listal too. (Which as far as I remember, is Tom's standpoint on the issue.)

In the end, it's Tom's site and he gets to make the decisions. I could also see there being issues where members/mods bicker over what counts as 'tasteful' or not.
blissfull 10 years, 3 months ago at Jan 26 13:41 -
Well, that's it isn't it? I think we all know what it comes down to in the end. Money.

When you are running a website, there is only one rule, the rule that will make your sponsors happy, which in this case is most likely the main reason for ruling out nudity altogether and that's the end of the discussion.

Otherwise, I think we made very good points.

You keep deleting my images even they only contain mild and tasteful nudity. They are merely sensual at most so I find that your censorship really sucks quite frankly!

Banning me from posting will not make me change my mind. I stand my ground and I will not stop posting pictures that I find appropriate even if you don't, I am sorry.

It is not as if I was posting porn. Stop being so stuck up! This kind of censorship is a form of extremism, you know...

I can only speak for myself. I've just checked last week's log. Personally I deleted just one image of yours in Alessia Marcuzzi's gallery, a candid shot of Alessia undressing on a beach. Yes, it was mild, but the picture was invalid anyway as her face was not visible. Maybe I should have provided the reason in more detail.
blissfull 9 years, 4 months ago at Dec 29 16:22 -
This is just one of many. Deleting a picture because you can sort of guess the shape of a nipple in a see-through fashion photoshoot is just ridiculous. Or deleting a picture because a girl is wearing a thong, same thing, ridiculous!

You see this is fashion magazines and on the beach. It hardly qualifies as "adult" content.

Believe me children have access to far worse in a mere Google search. Protecting them from hard stuff, yes, definitely! But falling into the other extreme consisting of trying to prevent them from seeing a thong or breasts, no, absolutely not!

We do not want to fall into the same category as countries like Iran, China, North Korea or Saudi Arabia, do we?

Why not implementing a "over 18 only" filter when uploading a picture like most websites dedicated to photography do? Of course, it is not a safeguard either but it is a step forward.

As you pointed out the more rules you make, the more work you give yourselves and the more difficult it will be to enforce them, not to say impossible.
blissfull 9 years, 4 months ago at Dec 29 18:05 -
OK, you keep deleting my posts so allow me to save you the trouble. I will delete all my posts myself. All 750+ pictures I generously shared. I will take that "Reporting" guy's advice and leave Listal. I have better things to do with my life than waste it in taking the time to upload pictures that you are subsequently going to remove anyway.

I think I will stick with Pinterest from now on. It is a much more user-friendly media than Listal.

Bye bye now!

blissfull 9 years, 4 months ago at Dec 29 18:29 -
You may as well delete all the pictures that Maggie has posted, by the way. There is a lot of nudity in them. You need to be consistent with your policy.

Have fun! And good luck with your outdated website.
