Nice one Lil, I wrote Colour earlier and my Firefox told me it had no U in it. I bowed to its will thinking "I am sure this is wrong!!" now I know for sure.
Is there a difference in spelling for definitely/definately? My spell check says it is Definitely, I always wrote it with an A until firefox corrected me, but I noticed a lot of people who are far better spellers than I, spell it with an A. Google tells me that it is one of the top 10 most commonly misspelled words. (Ha I managed to spell commonly and misspelled wrong the first time I wrote that!)

Agree, sadly those words are used a lot...
Skim milk - Is when you throw a stone across a pond of milk and it bounces!
Bulglarised - Is when McDonalds does a Kids meal promotion using the Burglar!
Catsup - Is used as a replacement for hi, often used to promote Beer!
I may be wrong, its hard to understand the accents y'all!

Misspelled is one of the most misspelled words, linguists have been splitting their sides with that one for ages.

I was watching CSI earlier and Nick said '3 houses have been burglarised in the area'...I thought, WHAT THE FUCK?! BUGLARISED?!
You have been burgled by a burglar, if there is a burglary.

As far as I know bulglarised has never been used as a word. Burgled just sounds like some one was trying to say burglary but burped instead. I've heard of burglarized though. Never had much of a chance to use it though.
I've never actually ever heard of anyone use the word "catsup" in real life.
Skim is a word. Milk is a word. Therefore skim milk must be words. But I don't like it much since it tastes weird.
Definitely is definitely spelled as definitely.
And color is an accepted spelling of color. Like you said, this ain't England so it's all good.
And people make up words all the time. And then people use them. And somehow some are added to dictionaries. Like ones from England.

So is it strange that I'm an American and I've always spelled it colour, humour, favourite, honour, etc.? Maybe it's because I was born in Europe, or maybe it's because that's just how you spell them, I don't know! :P

Though I spell colour with a 'u', it is indeed correct to spell it both ways (colour, color).
though, the 'u' gives it the 'ur' sound, why having just the 'o' makes it seem like its 'coe-lohr'.
I don't know why people say/spell 'catsup' the way it is...isn't it 'ketchup',
pronounced 'keh-chuhp'?
Why they call it skim milk is beyond me, though I like it better than 2% or Vitamin D milk, soy milk, and chocolate milk; always have, always will.
'Skim' is a word, 'milk' is a word. Together, 'skim milk' is an odd combination of two different words meaning two different things....
'Definitely' is one of the few words I cannot seem to spell; I have to constantly use Firefox to correct the spelling. 'Necessary' is another one of those words I cannot seem to get.

I always assumed catsup was used because Heinz trademarked ketchup. That, or its just a colloquialism used in certain parts of North America. It's ketchup around here though, and I'll be damned if I call it something else.
All you brits can go sod off about us not using proper english.
Please don't ban me.

@Silent Killer Fair enough, lets instead talk about driving on the correct side of the road ;-) Which is the left, so your sword wielding arm is free. Today it means English drivers can shake hands with each other whilst passing, we are polite like that!
Keeping this on topic, if you use words enough and more importantly they are published - they can become valid words! So please keep up the fight to keep us on our spell checking toes!

P.S Colour is spelt with a 'u'.
talking about proper english, how about "spelt with aN 'u'"?
also, when addressing your letter to America, could it be that South America doesn't speak english?

Bael, "an U" is not correct English. It is about how the letter is pronounced, like you would not say an once in a life time experience, you would say a once in a life time experiance. You would say an unusual but say a usual. It depends if you were saying you or Uh when you are using the letter.

Well if we are all going to be picky you spelled experience two different ways in a single sentence.
Hey, we drive on the right side of the road, cuz it's the right way.

I'm sorry North America, we're just a bit touchy over here because our entire political system is falling apart.
But it's Skimmed Milk.
But it's Skimmed Milk.

In Canada we tend to spell "colour", "honour", etc. with a u. This probably has something to do with us being a parliamentary democracy and having the Queen on coins or something.

Because we made you awesome, spiegalr. Don't mention it!

I don't think 'spelt' is a word either, is it? I think 'spelled' is the correct word.

I love this.
Colour, Honour, Favourite, Humour the british spelling system is such a better system.
As for Catsup, it's actually what some people call ketchup believe it or not... how that makes any sense is a mystery to me
Never understood skim milk, but hey, might as well let them think they're right, ignorance is bliss, what's America's motto? "too Proud for nothing, too ignorant for change!" well, it should be, after all, it's catchy.
Woah, now I can bitch out music too, catchy, it doesn't need lyrical value, wth is a misenheimer? This song sucks, I want this one, it just goes boom ba, I sing lots, boom ba, my song rocks.
Hey, that could be a hit single over here... a few more lines and a random synthesizer beat, yup, it's going platinum baby. America, the musically challenged unleashed...
Skim Milk, never got that... I think it's cuz skimmed is 3 letters too large for the average american's attention span, they should changed Ignorance is bliss to stupidity is bliss actually, but then again, Stupidity is also just funny, can't give it all the credit now can we.
Take out the love America part, England is to America as a Mother is to a Son.
The son revolts, doesn't know what the hell they're doing and precedes to rot in a whole, the mother watches it on the monitor :D
America has no right to call there language English, they may have originated from England, but so did Australia, they call their language Australian (English), so why isn't America speaking American (English)? afterall, they aren't the same languages, one's original, the other's a copy.
Damn Brazil, you screw up my logic with your portuguese and what not. Forgive my spelling of Portuguese, no idea how to spell it.
Spelt is indeed a word, just not a very good one. Just like Ain't.

I differentiate (hell, I'm not even sure that's a word!! I just like the way it sounds XD) between 'color' and 'colour'. Definitely is spelled as such, skim milk is not a word, but a name, and burglarized is not a word, contrary to popular belief.
God dammit, stop making such horrendously long replies, jeez!

'Spelled' and 'spelt' are both actual words and neither one is better than the other, though I suppose 'spelt' isn't used as frequently as 'spelled' where I live.
'Ain't' seems to have gotten in dictionaries somehow but many frown upon its usage.
What's wrong with the American Revolution? I don't see what your big problem with the United States is seeing as you live there. Sure it ain't the greatest place but I like it well enough. Plus the American Revolution was awesome.

I love ain't. It's probably my favorite word in the whole dictionary.

oh, never mind then. 'Spelt' or 'spelled' whichever suits your fancy =3
My favorite word in the dictionary is 'defenestration'. It means 'to push someone or something out a window'.

OMG I LOVE DEFENESTRATION. Well, not the act itself but the word. It's such a useful word to use.
My personal favorite is 'irregardless' since it's not even a word. I frown upon its usage but it's kinda amazing in a really stupid way.

Gotten is not a word apparently. I used it in an email at my old job and got crucified for it!

Accourding (look I added the 'u' for you brits) to several internet resources 'gotten' is indeed a word. Apparently it's really really old and it has subtle differences with 'got' blah blah blah. Take it with a grain of salt but eh.
