New Mail & Friend Requests notification icons

The new interface is sleek, but not practical sometimes. I think notification icons should be visible, not hidden. At least the new mail. I like to know at once when I got a new message. Not having to hover the mouse to check periodically.

There should be a rednumber box indicating new notifications on top of the profile picture, are you not seeing this?
