I'd prefer it stayed as a site that specialised in media items. I voted for none!

Same here, none of the above. Media all they way man. Trust Michigo to vote for them all.

I am a bit on the fence...have not made up my mind...I like Listal as a media and entertainment site...but it also would be cool to be able to catalog other items as well especially for insurance reasons to have a list of things. However, that being said, I do think that the issues with the current categories that already exist should be fixed before more categories are added.
One thing I am sure of is that if Websites were added ....watch out for the Spam threads.

I like the websites... mostly because it can often be related to the items we've categorized here. They would be interesting to add to the lists, i.e. lists of vampire-related websites, websites listing movies that have won awards, etc.

Kind of unexpected results so far. I will leave this poll running for some time. A major site update will be released first and improvements to the current features and then I will consider adding other categories.
I think it would be good to list websites even though there are quite a lot of sites to do this already. One problem might is that it kind of allows people to list anything (e.g. a list of favorite cars would just be a list of the websites). This could be a problem if specific categories are added later. Also as mentioned spam could become a big problem.

I have added an option for none, if you think any more options are needed let me know.

Iv voted for 4 of the above, but now i kind of feel i might be mistaken. I voted Travel because i felt that perhaps reviewing holidays, or countries or resorts etc would be very handy and a good idea. BUT it is available on so many different sites now does Listal need it?
Websites - This has been covered, but opens things up for major spam. If i was a website owner and wanted to advertise my site to the masses i could easily abuse Listal by rating all my sites 10 stars and slating my rivals etc. We already have 1 or 2 actors/writers trying to whore themselves to us.
Cars i voted because i thought it might be quite good to list your favorite cars, rate cars, ward people off of certain vehicles and makes etc.
Electronics etc i voted and this is the one i regret most, as amazon already does this, is Listal heading towards an amazon style website where you dont actually buy anything? If it began selling things it would just be Amazon Mk 2.

You could say that about any of the existing categories! I mean most of the database is built from amazon and imdb (which is owned by amazon)
Poll update : Added software category

What's wrong with listal staying how it is!

Agreed! Its in danger of getting loaded full o shite. I can see listal become like the bloody betterware catelogue with cars, websites and god knows what else. I might cry if this happens.

You are right that most of the categories are already done by amazon, but what i meant was this site has been originally made for media right? If it starts to branch out into everything then it might as well be Amazon because before you were focusing on part of what they already did, expanding on it etc. This way you are becoming it instead.
Now it could work out great with a lot of work, you could create the new amazon, earn a fortune and Listal would be world famous. It depends what sort of site you want Listal to be Tom.

I don't really see how adding more categories makes it more like amazon, the focus of the site is still the same e.g. :
1)Listing and sharing the stuff you like or dislike.
2)Discovering and exploring items (through social ways or other ways like tags or ratings)
3)Socializing and connecting with people based around items or people
4)Building a user contributed database of information, media and text on items.
1) Was the main focus at the launch of the site and parts of 3) and 4) being a more recent developments.
It's just doing those things with more categories. I never really considered this site like amazon but just with less categories.
To be honest if I was doing this site again I think I would stick to one category but since the site is setup to support multiple categories it makes sense to consider other ones (especially as the name can be read as 'list all')
Of course there are advantages and disadvantages of doing this and I have not decided anything and probably won't for at least a couple of months.

i vote for websites.

I guess there are big differences in Listal and Amazon that are strong enough to make them individuals, eg the social network, and the sharing as you say. Part of me feels that if there are too many categories the site will become generic, but that if there isn't enough evolution the site with stagnate. I feel clothes, collectables, food and drink, and Home have no place here though. The others i can imagine working rather well if set up properly.
Websites, and travel may open up too large a scope to be fathomable, where would the line be drawn? I could sit and review tons of places in my home town and barely any users would ever consider visiting them. It would work out handy on the other hand though to think "Im going to [place] i wonder if Listal has any recommendations" Or if i wanted a site for it the same kind of thing would apply. (Although google can do both)
Thats the trouble with the internet today, it does everything already, so i guess thats a moot argument against doing anything as if you can make Listal do it and more then it will eventually exceed the other sites. (Does that make sense?!)

I voted none, too. Don't want the pudding over-egged!

The benefit of the current set up is that most people have joined the site to list their favourite items of media and such. The people here are usually keen collectors of at least two different types of media, usually more, but they are all grouped under the main umbrella of simple collectors items.
I'm not sure I know anyone who collects cars or holidays. Those things have nothing to do with the basic collections listed on this site. Everyone likes films, music and has a few albums or DVDs though. They're like the core human collectors item! I liked the fact that these things were all together in one place, or else I probably wouldn't have joined. Likewise the addition of consoles as that seems to fit in well with the site. People care if you love an Xbox over Playstation, they don't care what DVD players you own.
I don't know why new things need to be added. Looking at the site, there are still a lot of improvements needed in the music and dvd collections anyway. I can't vouch for books, but replicas and double entries are cluttering up the other sections with no apparent fix in sight.

People may not want to collect holidays but I do think there is interest in listing places you have been or want to go and the creation of custom lists like 'Best cities for music', 'Best beaches in the world' etc..
Seeing which electronics and gadgets people own is less interesting I agree but you still have the other site features for this section e.g. tags, ratings, editable descriptions and maybe other fields, reviews, videos, pictures and more.
btw i don't necessarily think that these categories should be added I'm just putting another point of view out there. I can see disadvantages such as :
- Less time to work to work on specific features for certain categories.
- Diversification of userbase
- Recent additions containing items from categories people are not interested in (already a problem but less so now)
To be honest it's a tough one, when deciding what to do next it's a choice between these four :
a) writing more general features to benefit all categories (example : the recent explore reviews section, better tag entering system)
b) Improving or writing features for specific sections (examples : movie trailers or the recent full cast listings for movies)
c) Adding another category (example : gadgets)
d) Adding features unrelated to any categories (example : messaging, better profile pages)
Regarding removing duplicates the code to merge games duplicates would be implemented for music before any new categories.

I like the site just the way it is, so I voted "do not add any more". I think that Listal is unique in that it's solely a media based website. I don't think that other kinds of unrelated categories are necessary IMHO.

I'm voting none and saying the only thing close to a vote is Electronics and Gadgets but the site is great as is.

Another possibility I'd like to suggest--theatre, perhaps? Especially Broadway.
That said, I voted for websites and travel, though I also want to say that I love the site just as it is.

Another potential category which relates more to this site is internet video/podcasts e.g. the shows on revision3.com

hm, i agree with the others that listal should focus on mostly physical items you actually collect, like movies, music, or "gadgets" (like game consoles that are already present), that's why i would also vote for them. i don't see the point in "collecting" and thus listing web sites or podcasts. at least here on Listal (there are other sites specializing in these kind of things).

i don't really like any of the choices listed above. other than maybe software or gadgets nothing else really seems to fit with the rest of the site.
i think that magazines would be the only other type of media i would like to be able to list.

Magazines are a good idea. And if it's not already an option, maybe strategy guides for the gamers.

I think adding electronics would be good. Along with magazines.

I love this site because it's so valuable when i'm searching for the next movie/series to watch...
Using reviews, scores and friends' suggestions I can easily find things that probably I'll like.
That's what made of listal one of my favorite website
I do agree that this kind of approach can be valuable for any possible category, but sincerely I'm not interested in cars, gadgets, clothes, food, postcards, animals or anything else.
Having an homepage with reviews or news about any collectable item will just mean that browsing this site and finding what's valuable for me will be more difficult.
I would vote for magazines since somehow is related.
Not sure on website

Magazines would be a good idea, but other than that I can't really see where these other categories would fit the purpose of Listal. I voted for 'do not add any more.'

Tom, I would love to have all your options, after all the name is ListAl.
When I started I didn't know how to use it and hoped that I could use it to list ALL my belongings somewhere SAFE so if there were a fire in my tiny home I would have a reliable list saved that I could show to the insurance company. I told all my friends about it and they waited for me to learn how to make those extra lists. I never did.
Tom, all of your ideas are great. Is it possible to add the option of "misc. list pages" where we can upload our own photos and label them. That way we really can List All without you having to write a bunch of new programs. I am not sure if that is possible. I am not a programer. Maybe there is a way to do this here already and I am not savy enough with computers to know how, if so, sorry.
The other thing I would love is way to use CueCat or some other USP/ISBN code reader of your choice. That would really increase the speed of filling up the lists, new or old.
Thanks for the poll. Glad you care enough to ask.
