So friends aren't the same as contacts, right? This page is a bit confusing...

I agree it's confusing at the moment. Basically the system is like youtube where you can subscribe to someone or add them as a friend.
Friends currently serve little purpose but could be used in the future to only allow friends to comment on your profile or pictures. I may just remove most references to friends from the site and have the focus being on people you follow or contacts.
The new followers system is more flexible as you can choose which areas you want to follow. Following someone does not need to be approved by the other person or reciprocated.
Friends - People you might talk to or know on the internet or in real life.
Contacts/People you follow - People whos content you find interesting or people whos tastes match yours.
I welcome suggestions on this.

OK, that makes a little more sense now. But the screen shot you have up at the top is for your contacts' movies, but then it says "top movies this year by friends" and "friend updates". Do the lists pertain to friends or contacts? If it's the latter, you might want to change it to say so if friends no longer serve a key role in the new version.
Also, this could go along with the Listal homepage thread, but I just updated my contacts feed, and on the homepage there is a long string of activity that eats up almost the entire right side of the homepage. Is there any way to shorten the feed list on the homepage even more? I kind of miss the recent thread list at the bottom of the old version, although it's not entirely necessary. Also, the "new people" section at the very bottom left hand corner looks a little out of place...

Also, to avoid any confusion and to make things a little easier for me, I've simply "followed" all my friends' activity. After all, they wouldn't be my Listal friends if I didn't appreciate the things they contribute in the first place. ;p

You say that following a contact does not need approval or to be reciprocated, but would we be able to block users from following us? Say someone is being harrassed by a user, that dastardly Gemlil for example! And you don't want them anywhere near your profile or what you are rating etc, would you be able to block them? I'm not sure what a pervert could do with my rating of Gladiator, but I'd rather not find out :O hehe.
Prelude might not want people to find out about his massive hentai obsession or something similar too, being able to hide it could perhaps be a useful addition? (Ah now I look suspicious don't I!!)

I was thinking the same, RB6K, and addressed a little of that in the "friends and followers" thread. It seems a strange concept to me. :/

Probably not but I am going to add a setting so you can hide certain updates (from everyone not individual people) I don't consider this a big deal as most of the stuff added to this site is non personal in nature.
Everything is added on this site is public anyway with the exception of private lists which are not added to the feeds.
People can actually track you already with the use of rss feeds, anyone can add the rss feed of your rated items and track it in a rss reader and I will add rss for reviews soon as well.
I will be adding a feature to generally block a user from sending you messages or generally commenting on your profile/reviews/lists etc...
For a popular example of the followers/following system in action would be twitter e.g.:
twitter.com/JasonCalacanis
And friendfeed (who use the 'Subscriptions' term):
friendfeed.com/arnet
The main purpose/objective of the feeds system is discovering new content on the site.

I've changed this.

I like this contacts system much better. The contacts rating of certain films are much more relevant now that I can select whose ratings it is taking an average from. I like this page too.
