New Categories

I just noticed people are all ready abusing the new categories for example places, one person as added the most beautiful places on earth.

Are there going to be rules set in place very soon, and also are categories going to be defined.

Yeah I agree there really are so many places that people can put and people can really put silly things as well such as visited Mars, since I noticed the planets are there. And I noticed whoever put that "most beautiful places" deleted the picture.

I tried adding a load of places myself to contribute to the database, it is rather time consuming though, but if it's made a start for others then that's something. Really I just like Listal as a place to put media interests such as Films/TV/Games, etc, but since it's a list website I guess that lists of other things are appropriate as well as the website grows, but as you said it can really just open itself to abuse.

There will be a links coming this month to report pages to be deleted, merged or to change category.

That is good to know, I was thinking today how easily I can just put my local pub down as a place, but then how stupid would it look.

The new categories are great, I do enjoy travel and been around and it would be nice to have real places not just any old thing, it would also make it hard to find things.

Is there an easy way to prevent duplicate entries to categories? - for instance I have been adding to the fictional character category, but aside from scrolling through all the pages, I don't know if the character has already been added unless it was added from the same wikipedia page that I used, then it shows up.

Use search function before adding an item.

If you search for Spider-Man, you won't see the Spider-Man character in the first page of results, neither in the second page. You'll have to scroll to the bottom of page 3!
You won't even find it if you happen to typeSpiderMan with no hyphen in it.

I mean, we need a more powerful search function. :)

The new categories need to be included in the search drop down box, otherwise, as The O.P said, there are to many results to easily find out if it has been added already.

Yes we definitely need a better search engine (e.g. special signs like "ß" are still not recognized). I did more simple search requests, like "Dresden" or "Cologne" and both results were on top of the first page. But of course it's more difficult with more common words.

Yep! Nevertheless, the large city in North Rhine-Westphalia already has a duplicate, probably due to its different names in English (Cologne) and German (Köln).

BTW, as Listal search doesn't recognize German special signs, like you said, if someone looks for "Köln", Listal search says: No search results, and asks the user to "Add new items to Listal"!
Anautix 11 years, 7 months ago at Sep 12 10:17 -
First I added Cologne with it's English name, so that's not the cause for the duplicate. The duplicate of Cologne was Coby's mistake (www.listal.com/topic/duplicate-places). For me as a German it's annoying that the search engine doesn't read special signs. The search engine should be "updated" to UTF-8.

And the search engine is even more stupid: When searching for "Milano", it doesn't find "Milan" - there is only 1 letter added! It seems to give only exact results. Also the search for "Hanover" did not give me "Hannover" as a result (I later added the name "Hanover" to the existing place).

However, I've just noticed that we can search for places, with a direct URL. :)
For instance:
www.listal.com/search/places/cologne
www.listal.com/search/places/milan
www.listal.com/search/places/st.moritz
www.listal.com/search/places/notre+dame+de+paris

I think NOW it's more important than ever to have some "abuse/error" button and maybe a way to describe the problem. Without such possibility, Listal will get thousands of such junk pages. Miracle people don't add their webpages for SEO yet -.-

@The O.P.

The search engine is a mystery to me. Why does it find "Düsseldorf" but not "Nürnberg"? Both words have one "ü" letter. I thought it never finds words with special signs...

Edit:
It finds also the place "Münster". Has it something to do with the URL of wikipedia?

Edit 2:
..and it finds the place "Lübeck". It definitely has to do with the linked wikipedia URL, because it only works when the link includes the same word.

I doubt that Tom will update the search engine, since we already had this problem with the old listal.

The database is already UTF-8 but for some reason some characters search correctly, I will have to investigate further.
