Need help from people with smartz

FG93 12 years ago at May 6 22:50 -
I'm trying to remember a word, I can't describe it very well which makes it hard to ask about but I'll try. (Yes I've tried Googling it but the searches I entered looked retarded, which reflected in the results :( )

The word is used to describe someone who says something obvious and pointless after something has happened, so like pointless advice given too late.

An example would be something like; if you tried to jump over something and fell over it, then the person says 'you should of jumped higher'. Or the example that got me trying to remember the word today; I dropped my iPod and some woman said; 'You should have kept hold of that'.

Retarded description I know, but like the title says, someone with loads and loads of smartz is needed to tell me what this word is!

Stoblify means to state the obvious but I doubt that's what you're after. It isn't really used. Prolixity and logorrhoea both basically mean 'too much' with regards to speech (like verbosity) but that's probably not what you mean either.

There's always the ever-popular phrase 'belaboring the obvious'.

I truly don't know of any other word that is defined as 'stating the obvious' though. I do know of plenty replies to someone who does. ;D

You might want to try looking up 'irrelevant' or 'inconsequential' on the on-line thesaurus. The word might be listed under those headings or something close to the word you want. i use 'trite' can be used to describe a persona or comment. Still, I do think there is a word for people who say stuff like "Hot out there?" when it is roasting outside.

incongruous... extraneous... I'm just grasping at straws now :/

obtuse???

adjective
1.not quick or alert in perception, feeling, or intellect; not sensitive or observant; dull.
2.not sharp, acute, or pointed; blunt in form.
3.(of a leaf, petal, etc.) rounded at the extremity.
4.indistinctly felt or perceived, as pain or sound.

Phrases coming to mind:

"No shit, Sherlock."
"Good call, Captain Obvious."
"Gee, ya think? You're a regular fucking Einstein. Thanks!"
"You're about as useful as a snow-shovel in July."
and of course the ever-classic,
"How bout you go f*** yourself."

Specific word to describe that person, though? Hmmm.
smartass
wiseass
jackass
ass

It's a stretch, but such a person could be considered to be a "malapert".

If you're looking for synonyms for "sarcastic", acrimonious is a rather nice word.

And then there's the "useless" aspect.
Redundant, exorbitant, wanton, superfluous, impertinent...

Yeah... not sure that was of any help to you. Good luck!

@Fortunato, Iceviper, jaytoast + Xanadon't

Thanks for the suggestions but I haven't recognised it yet, although some of those I would use yes ;D

Maybe I made it up and just thought it was real

*Edit* - Oh and I think that it might of been more to describe the comment itself rather than the person saying it (?)

A "hackneyed" expression? For when a comment or statement is overused and apparent.

pedestrian, truistic, clichรฉ, platitude - Those also have similar meanings.
