U2 (the guys who sang 'Sunday Bloody Sunday') are from Ireland, and the song refers to this event:

Bloody Sunday

The British army stormed in on Irish Civil Rights protesters and killed 13 of them, 6 of them were just kids. They were unarmed and five of them were shot in back, while 2 were run over by army vehicles. This event caused major anger amongst the Irish towards the british occupiers and boosted big recruitement into the IRA, the Irish revolutionary army, which some consider a terrorist organization.

ANYTHING music related? okay then. Past months I've started downloading & checking stuff like crazy. All kindsa Japanese heavypsych freakouts, roots reggae, folk oddities (Vashti Bunyan!! check it out!), this whole 60s/70s Brazilian tropicalia/bossa nova/samba-rock scene (thinking bout learning Portuguese here, to tap into it more heavy) etc etc Yesterday I checked out this guy Bülent Ortaçgil, supposed to be the Turkish Nick Drake or something - It was alright yunno. Today Erik Satie - no clue what to expect. That's basically why i'm not on this site that much, rateyourmusic owns my soul right now. I use this place for movies only.

So not to get into this illegal dowloading debate too much, if the tools are there, and you're already using them, why not use them to the fullest. Not just downloading porn, the latest U2 single or Jason Bourne movie. It's good to regularly try out some new stuff, especially since checking different scenes has become so easy. Only takes a little googleing that's all.

I hear ya, Dale. I download heavily, but I honestly don't touch crap like Spidey 3 or 300 or most other mainstream films. Instead I'm into little-known foreign films and hard-to-find classics. Yeah, I don't go to rental shops anymore, but its because of their lack of selection (and 100+ copies of 'Game Plan').

This is broad. Have you guys heard that record labels have the cancer right now? They're not holding up well, either. I'm borrowing CDs from a guy at school and burning them onto my compy. I don't like downloading - never found a good outlet for it. But you can't complain about the recent Nine Inch Nails release, eh?

I want alternate opinions here. What do you guys think, should libraries stock music once record labels finally hit the floor? That'd be superb. I'd donate all the stuff I've burned right away. Next up would be movies and video games, which would create the lack of need to ever buy anything from a store! An online database for downloading everything known to man might be useful as well.

It's some crazy ethereal stuff. I almost went insane listening to Gymopedies on a loop. Downloading most of his work is pretty much legal these days depending on what recording you are getting.
Ahh the wonders of "classical" music; it's mostly public domain.

I do tend to support the artists creating the art I so enjoy but the way the Music industry is at the moment, particularly CDs... it's just insane. And most of the stuff I listen to is obscure foreign stuff anyway... I do buy the CDs every now and then but paying $40+ for music I can get for free illegally... it's a bit of a complicated issue.

I'll admit that I used to download stuff pretty heavily, particularly my first couple of years at university, but these days probably about 95% of my new music comes from CDs or vinyl (anyone remember that still?!) I'm still occasionally guilty of downloading stuff by a band I've not heard, or a new album I'm interested in buying, but that's pretty rare these days - I'll usually wait for new stuff that I want, and if I'm less sure I'll just buy it when it's in the sales. That said, with the way the record labels have stuck their heels in over the last 10 years and the way they treat many of their artists, they do deserve quite a bit of what's been happening to them.

I like where this thread is going, I don't really have anything much to say besides a few of the points shown

and Prelude, I already knew, but I was just wondering if anyone else knew those kinds of songs well(most do not)

Went to the shops today, and they were asking 34.90€ (almost 40 bucks) for the Beatles' Red and Blue albums, the White Album costs about the same here. Same ruddy discs they released 20 years ago with no new remastering or extras or booklets or nothing.

Luckily our copyright law has a fair use clause, and its legal to copy cd's from friends for personal use. Local libraries tend to have bigger and better selections than record stores. I can copy the whole discographies of Beatles, Stones, Dylan, whoever and it's perfecly legal.

I don't like downloading - never found a good outlet for it.

google blog search

LimeWire works well -__-'

although there are some useless stuff there where the song turns out to be a totally different song

(all you have to do is look at the KB size, if a lot of them are like 3000, that probably means those are the real songs, if one is 116, its probably some guy talking, or, if it had one thats 1 MB and 20 that are 6000 KB, go with the 20, because there is never a whole group of spammed songslol

I never said the record labels don't deserve to have the cancer. It's not even a matter of supporting an artist - the music industry enforces indentured slavery upon them. The record labels will say in liner notes that you have to pay to support the artists, but who do you think usually gets more?

Do libraries usually have music in them, or is this a perk of living where you live?
Devious Phenomenon 16 years, 2 months ago at Mar 12 20:29 -

Dunno. I'd be interested in hearing about this. In a town of 100'000 people our library has a big and varied selection. Whole discographies of major artists like Beatles, Bowie etc. as well as all the recent pop/rock acts you'd see in a record store. Sections for special genres like soul, reggae, blues, hip hop, metal,"world music" have hundreds of albums each. Jazz and classical sections are about as big as the pop/rock section.

Jealous?

Jealous?

That is not only a spiteful thing to say, but accurate as well. I give you two thumbs DOWN for that comment.

Our libraries have music, DVD and VHS movies(Canada)... Whether or not it's all worth sifting through is debatable, though! :P (though the movies are actually pretty good).
