"Mixed" Race?

TrekMedic 11 years, 5 months ago at Dec 4 5:44 -
OK,...be civil because I'm asking out of pure and simple curiosity: since we're a diverse bunch here on Listal, how do you define "mixed race" such as adding information on a particular celebrity?
Do you go by acknowledged genetic "races" (Causcasian, Black, Asian, Native American, etc,...) or ethnicity (Swedish, Persian, Italian, Hindi, etc,...)?

I am new on Listal, but I guess it depends on the level of detail that is wanted.
If there are no official guidelines (are there?), then, well, I guess it's up to you! :)

The whole issue of "Ethnicity" is a bit confusing, because there are different meanings and levels of detail.

For instance, Amitabh Bachchan is "East Indian" (very specific definition!) on Listal, but "Asian/Indian" (more general group) on NNDB.

On the contrary, Spanish actor Javier Bardem is "White / Caucasian" (more general group) on Listal, but NNDB has him as "Hispanic" (more specific).

It also depends on your point of view! It seems to me that Americans tend to think of North European ancentry as White / Caucasian (for instance John Wayne is "White" on NNDB and "White / Caucasian" on Listal), while Hispanic ancentry is thought of as a group apart (for instance Benicio Del Toro is "Hispanic" on NNDB and "Hispanic / Latin" on Listal).
Actually, Hispanics are as much "Caucasian" as anyone else. :D

There is more: "Caucasian" is not even the same as "White" skin.

According to Wikipedia, quote:
The term Caucasian race (also Caucasoid, Europid, or Europoid)[1] has been used to denote the general physical type of some or all of the populations of Europe, North Africa, the Horn of Africa, Western Asia (the Middle East), parts of Central Asia and most parts of South Asia.[2] Historically, the term has been used to describe many peoples from these regions, without regard necessarily to skin tone.[3]

Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz are white / Caucasian. Hispanic / Latino is not a race. It is a ethnic group of sorts, but it is really compromised of many different races. For example, Laz Alonso and Zoe Saldana are not the same race as William Levy and Alexis Bledel, but they are all Hispanic / Latino. And no, I do not think white / Caucasian is restricted to being pale. Penelope and her sister, Monica, technically are not pale. Neither is John Turturro or Mila Kunis, but I would still say they are white / Caucasian.

I totally agree with what you said ^ Some people seem to confuse race with ethnicity. I'd say Mila Kunis is definitely Caucasian - she is Jewish Ukrainian, and yeah, "Caucasian" can mean a lot of different skin tones. Speaking of Eastern Europe, I have no idea what race the Romani (i.e. Gypsies) would be listed as.
