missing movie name

for a couple of years now i try to track down a movie i saw maybe 20 years ago:

the story is that some criminals get caught in a police station together with some policemen, who have have to team up with the criminals to defend the police station against a gang assault.

i'd say the movie is from the seventies, and as far as i remember the movie entirely takes place at nighttime.

any suggestions?

I would agree with escafeld that sounds like Assault on Precinct 13

yes yes *bows down*! thank you so much, now i can rest in peace :D. this is it (after checking some film stills), i saw there is even a (i suppose awful) remake. i remember the original as being pretty intense, but i'll see if that's really the case after rewatching it (it's been 20 years though).

this thread can be deleted (except there is another poor soul suffering like me who misses the name of this great movie).
