Minimum ratings requirement to use the groups section.
Deleted user

The groups section, despite recent improvements in moderation is still unfit for purpose.
The main problem is that 14 year old drones are logging on in their droves to use the groups section as a chat site. This simply has to stop is listal is going to continue to prosper. Countless threads have been made regarding the presence of people who ooze inanity into the groups section, but surely there is a clear answer:
Block group participation altogether unless members have rated at least 100 items.
This is better than (though I'd still be in favour of) a points limit, because the lesser members are capable of adding hundreds of animรฉ profile pictures per minute it would seem. It is ESSENTIAL that people rate items of media when they join listal and use the groups section as an aside to learn more about other regular contributors.
As we speak there are hundreds of "Hi I'm New", "Where's INA?", "Do you like me?" threads pervading the group section, this filth should have been stamped out with the abolition of 'Random Chat' altogether, but it hasn't been. Apparently it is wise to keep a forum specifically for this frustrating melting pot of vapidity. In the mean time how about implementing a minimum ratings requirement before you can participate?
It would at least stop new idiots from Moronsville Highschool Tennessee from joining every day. People would be able to view what's being posted but they wouldn't be able to post themselves. Perfect.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. If they are able to read the groups section then we could provide a FAQ sticky for them to read should they have any problems (With the tip of PMing someone for any further questions) I would be more than happy to help write an FAQ if need be as it is required to over come barriers in setting limits.
As you may have noticed, tonight i have been going to town on these little brats, they are completely ignorant of how much they effect this site and they NEED to be purged or prevented from further damage. I have recently asked quite a few friends to join up and they declined because it just looks like a daycare for Americas most neglected children.
It may not seem like such a big deal to some, but i am positive that once this problem is solved the website will flourish.

Sounds good to me but there'll always be that one legit user that'll probably have a legit reason for posting on the forums. But a FAQ with subsequent PM measures would probably solve that problem as the person above me pointed out.

All good points, I wanted to elaborate further but didn't want my first post to be glossed over. It's such a horrible issue and it needs addressing immediately. I too have tried to justify the site to other friends, but as soon as they check out the groups section they question my sanity. I'd love it if more of my friends posted here so I could check out their film tastes.
When I'm not being accused by Listal's most paranoid about being an alt account, three people I have directly or indirectly informed about this site are now in the top 30 contributors, so I'm not just someone who invites an insignificant other in for the points. Thank the lord the majority of them joined around this time last year before this landslide of kids fell into the site and ruined it.

Its completely fool proof :) i cant see how it wouldn't solve half of our problems. No one would rate 100 items on every multiple account etc, and the naruts would lose interest.
Deleted user

That or they do rate 100 different Naruto items (or something of a similar vein) and all the ratings get skewed to their favor. Even worse they might convert and try to be legit users of Listal.
Deleted user

If someone votes for 100 naruto items, they'd be easy to find and the damage could easily be undone. Likewise if someone votes for 100 films with a standard 1/10 rating then we'll know they're jive talking.
Furthermore, either naruto can be excluded from the overall ratings completely, or Tom can change the forumula to give the votes dished out by regular voters more weight than the newbs, much like imdb does.

Tom can change the forumula to give the votes dished out by regular voters more weight than the newbs, much like imdb does.I'm not really jiving with that proposed solution. Some part of me still fervently believes my vote counts just as much as anybody else's vote.
But a 100 rating limit will tide the flood I bet. Hopefully it'll be enough to disparage the majority of them.
Deleted user

It would be interesting if the site flagged up users who seem to vote *everything* 1/10 or 10/10 as there are a fair few out there! That way their opinion could be made less valid, no one is that enthusiastic about everything they see!!
I think removing naruto would be like censoring its existence, whilst a good thing if it was worldwide, it might stop genuine people voting it as part of their collection etc.
Maybe another points related thing would be worthwhile? I dont want to make things too unaccessible but perhaps only the top 50% of users ratings should be considered in overall rankings, or 90% leaving the bottom dwellers to their mundane existence. It wouldn't have to be announced that this is the case, people wouldn't expect their 1 vote to make an immediate impact anyway.

i have rated 114 items

Maybe we ought to make it 500 items instead.

you know just cuz you say that wont make anyone stop

Of course it will. The majority of people who sign up currently, just do it to 'socialise' with their schoolmates who they are sitting next too. If they have to make the effort of earning so many points or making so many ratings to 'socialise' with their friends, it will deter them.
Besides candidancer, you are treating this place like a dating websites with your "Hi, I'm Single!" threads.

It is getting better. we used to get about four different 'post your naruot jutsu!!!' threads each day, and about a dozen OMG or IM BORED or I WANNA KILL MYSELF threads each day as well. The anime section is actually starting to be active again (with actual anime discussion), the main core groups are pretty decent and problem free.
The thing is since its just me and Voxy (and Voxy is on vacation this week or two), and I took a few days off to enjoy 30+C sunny weather and my kid's birthday, there will be a half dozen pointless crap posted. Eventually we'll have a few more mods and a few more mod powers (temporarily lock abusers from posting for a few days), but I must remind you we don't have set rules yet for forums, I'm kind of making them up as I go. The RP had to stop because even if someone wanted to start a real RP thread, they got ambushed by 20 kids posting 'hi' into the thread. The 'I'm Bored' and 'I want to kill myself', as well as flame wars, are being locked/deleted for obvious reasons. But people introducing themselves, asking for friends, asking for ASL and if others are single, there is no rule for that at the moment. sure its annoying as hell when any kid 14 or under posts, as their brains are not fully developed, but we also don't have firm rules to block them from posting.
So I'm sure it will get better, but introducing a rating requirement will just coz Naruto to become #1 top rated movie once more. Forget the band-aid solution - we need to chop off the entire leg on this disease ;P And slowly but surely, many are getting bored without their jutsu and RP threads are are leaving / deleting their accounts. it wont happen overnight, but it is already happening.

Why not? You are in power right now. Don't wait for the Mod Forum. Take action, say whats right and whats not. You are meant to be patrollng these forums since Tom has Admin duties. Worry about the 'Rights' and what not later.

Why not? They don't benefit anyones collections. Surely for now, people should be working on their profile and collection stats as opposed to who the funk everyone is. I was here for more than 7 months before I started in the groups. If Groups is your first port of call, it should be your last.

Adding a requirement would stop or at least reduce the spam bots and people creating multiple accounts but it does seem a little unfriendly way of going about things. I will consider it though.

I agree, people whose first (and only) visit is to the groups section, saying they were recommended this site by their anime friends, I'd like to see a way to stop that. But on the flip site, if we even block one potential user who just made a new account and wanted to post "Help me get started, I have no idea what to do here", then it makes this feel like a closed site.
Tom, what about getting getting rid of Random Chat altogether and replacing it with 'New Members' or 'Help Centre' or something to that effect, where new users can introduce themselves and ask questions. And all other groups will be well moderated to stop the pointless threads, and also all sections except this new group will require a certain # of points.
This way, all 'spam bots' and abusive users who just make a new account would be contained to one group only, new members can still introduce and ask questions, and Random Chat will be eliminated completely, making my moderating so much less stressful :)

If you click on 'About Listal', one of the goals of this site is to be a social website to meet new people and friends with similar tastes. Unless that changes, or Tom gives me a clear path to take, I'm not in a position to tell people 'Only talk about your collections, this isn't a dating site'.

Could we leave my genitals out of this for one second!
The 'rules' aren't in place but surely you can throw up some guidelines in the meantime. Tose kids are still Role Playing, killing themselves and mindlessly chatting.
However, deleting Random Chat would help **** loads. Without it, they have no cause to say any of that shit. I reckon we should crack down now and once they have all died from the cold harsh winter of irno-fistness, then we can think about making the place more social.
I personally would like to meet more people who are into my favourite things but there is a time for making friends and a time for cleaning up. Guess which one we are in?

I do have some guidelines, specifically to address the threads of concern: role-playing, suicide, and pointless spam threads. And I do warn all multiple offenders via PM. But even so, I can't be on checking every thread every hour of the day. As I mentioned before, its just me and Voxy now, and besides she doesnt go into Random Chat out of her sanity. And I'm not gonna be online at 3am to police these kids. I'll just delete offending threads in the morning. So until we have a Mod Group and a few more mods, i'm not going to go all gestapo on them.
Deleted user

just delete all of them
Deleted user

Just take initiative Prelude, don't wait for guidelines. I'm almost certain Tom doesn't want threads where people are laying down 'Hi I'm new here' threads. Anyone of sound body and mind can see what's cool and what's dispicable. I'd be all for annihilating the Random Chat room forever, it serves no purpose whatsoever. That, combined with the ratings ban on the site would severely restrict the traffic in groups. It has gone on long enough.
Moderators are essential I guess, but we don't need that many if all of the naruto chaff disperses from the site. How about just word filtering 'Naruto' as well? It might stop it becoming a hit with the google slurp spiders then.

He already has taken the initiative, trust me I can see the moderation logs ;)
We have briefly discussed guidelines and I will propose a set of rules soon which will be simple, I don't want a huge long list of rules.

Can I suggest a 'Casual Friday'? It might be unproffesional but its good for morale.
Changes need to be made, I agree with your suggestion GA...but bare in mind the forums have already vastly improved and Rome wasnt built in a day. x

I like that 'Rome wasnt built in a day' thing GemLil, good words of wisdom...
Maybe you guys should try something more effective.
A review requirement
wiith there already being a word requirement, if they don't care about this site they will be gone as soon as you say 'you need 10-50 reviews to post in groups'
it would be a more effective way of weeding out those who dont care an those who do
I'd say start with a limit of 10 then grow it larger based on what other people have to say
It sure beats somebody going in an rating things with totally random stuff even if they havent seen it, thats what most will do if this is put into effect. Plus, reviews you HAVE to watch the show or movie on to know everything about it, any people reviewing crap reviews on things they know nothing about will be IMMEDIATELY found out
Just my suggestion, and I'd like to bump the 10 up to 15... anyone else wanna bump the amount or back the suggestion?

How about a mixture?
-500 Items
-20 Reviews
-Intelligence
Its just for the Groups Section since it is the only problem.

I wouldn't mind that but a lot of people don't write many reviews. I think the ratings system would be a lot more effective considering everyone who comes to listal should be doing so just for that reason.
It must be incredibly unlikely that anyone would sign up to a website they didn't really get the gist of only to ask for help. Private Messages could still be dispatched if there is any confusion, but people deserve more credit, they can figure out that they're meant to be rating items and building personal lists!

I found out on my own easily enough

We put a Resus monkey and and an Animaniac on listal; without any prior instruction.....

Look at the Naruts. Though some of them were told this was a place to 'socialize and RP' the others all came here on their own and decided that even though its called LISTAL, they are gunna RP and Random Chat... its called listal for a reasn... besides... Chatal or Role-Playal don't sound very appetizing... make me think of Escargo(No offense people who like it, I just find it... wierd)
Deleted user

escargo it sounds fmailiar

Escargo is wank.
It really baffles me why they are still showing up. It is as if someone has gone out of their way to invite them here.
VV, Macargo is a Pokemon I believe.

I believe it was the Google Bot that caused a lot of this unpleasantness, due to a particular naruto jutsu guide being indexed highly up the engine. (corrective action has been taken, wink wink, nudge nudge)

oh it's a pocket monster well now there's no way for more to find us other than of coarse the annoying as hell reccomendations
