Mindless Lists

Onion Jack 10 years, 8 months ago at Sep 3 21:27 -
What the chuff is going on with Listal just now? There seems to be a torrent of mindless crap popping up, is there no way to control the content or should we just expect it to slide further into the toilet?

Examples:

Coats, boots, jackets:
docoolas.listal.com/lists

Bedding:
milena198702.listal.com/lists

What makes it worse is that the bedding list has been broken up into multiple lists in some lame-arsed attempt to gain a few more votes... pathetic!

There has to be more power for instant removal of this tat, it simply clogs up the feeds.

Well Milana has been making those kind of lists since she has started i think that is why she is excluded from the points system.

Also docoolas seems to be a profile just trying to promote a site to buy clothes and stuff. Iv'e seen a couple of these types of profiles myself just more spam accounts
Maggie 10 years, 8 months ago at Sep 4 0:48 -
I banned the user from the first link. Definitely counts as a spam account, in my opinion, since the only reason they're using the site is to promote their random clothing shit.

Milena is uh... not well known for her intelligence, let's say. But like DuckNation said, she's excluded from the points system, so while useless, her lists aren't necessarily doing any harm. What bugs me is that she ends all her list titles in question marks? Like she's just so confused? About what the titles of her lists are? And seems very unsure? Do all these questions make me look awesome?

Feel free to report lists as irrelevant or for whatever you think needs reporting. Mods still can't do anything about them, though, so the point is kind of moot at the moment.

Would lists made a member known rickterenzi qualify as spam? He makes countless lists which are just random selections of movies, TV shows, actors, actress, images etc, which don't serve any purpose, not mention are somehow getting promoted to the front page.

If any of his lists are to be regarded as spam then we may as well shut up shop immediately, his lists seems no different to anyone else's to be honest.

But then, in the new betalistal.com there are new categories such as "Toys and Collectibles" , "Gadgets and Electronics" and even a generic category "Products".

Looks like Listal's going pinterest!

In the light of that, I guess a list of collectibles... or even a list of "beddings" someone loves... should not be regarded as "spam" or "irrelevant", unless there is clear intent of spam.

Just my 2 eurocents :)

I think opening up the categories too much is a huge mistake, it will lead to even more rubbish, but that's only my opinion. I do think that there is certainly room for more categories, but it seems that it's going to be open to just about anything.

When I made my castles list, I tried to at least include a film element, to make it relevant. I probably have one or two lists (probably from when I first started) that are a bit crappy, but I do try to aim them towards having some sort of point, even if the point is pretty pointless ;)

I just hope that the impending changes don't make this place too much of a toilet in the future, because I think that would drive many users away. There is only so much plop you can look at before becoming rather bored.

As for the bedding list, it's pure garbage... simple as... but then the user has been excluded, so they are clearly known for fly-tipping their unwanted tat all over the place.

That's why the new site will have the option to completely exclude certain categories. Currently image lists do not have a category set they are simply category 'image' in the new site they will have a more specific category set.

I'm glad to read that some thought has been given to the issue, we seriously don't need lists for 'Favourite Dog Plops' or 'Kilts for Cats'... or 'Bedding (parts 1-5000)'.

On a completely unrelated matter, is there any reason for the slowness of the site today? It's been pretty bad lately, but today it has been next to useless... no internal server errors but slower than a Brazilian in a Ferrari.

Edit: forget the last part, I've just seen your reply in the other thread :)

What I think can be considered spamming though is making lists en masse and then posting them to all your friends to vote for them. Like its one thing to make a few useless image lists but some users are making hundreds and hundreds of them.
Iceviper 10 years, 8 months ago at Sep 9 10:18 -
Useless to one is relevant and important to another. As this site has expanded and it's membership grown, sub groups have been formed and friendships cemented in place. Rick Terenzi is one of my friends and I find his "stuff" interesting. I'm sure that I don't have a lot of friends and followers and I do not follow the old established "norm" of Listal but diversity is what fuels growth. Some opinions I have read here make it seem as if some of the Listal users are pompous elitists that want everyone to follow lockstep in their hallowed footsteps. I don't believe that is what we're about here but ultimately that would be for Tom to decide. I have already lost several friends to this bickering (Fortunato comes to mind) and I really don't want to loose any more. The moderators seem to be doing a decent job of picking off the people that are being big time douche's so why pick on the small shit? I don't see why we can't live and let live.

My two (USA) cents, which will undoubtedly get me circling the bowl.

Well since I was the one who used the term 'useless', it would seem that I was right in my thinking since one user had already been excluded from the points system, and the other was spamming the site... even though I would prefer to see the lists in question disappear into Room 101.

As for Rick, I have no issue with him at all, and I tend to vote for his lists.

Edit: I used 'mindless', oh well... a reply is a reply, and I've already replied, so it can stay replied.

I think if now we're allowed to choose the categories we're mainly interested in, it should stop the things we consider superfluous from appearing on our first page, shouldn't it? I mean, I believe that's the whole purpose of having something like that in the first place, so that we can somehow direct the things we want to see and such.

I might be interested in checking out some of the things others might have created and advertised in my comments, but probably not when they approach me saying that this or that needs votes, because that's kind of a thrown off and I believe that really comes out to me as: "I'm only here for the points", so, I think if people want to do that, they might want to change the way they're doing it. I have talked to countless people about the project I'm running around here as well, so, I guess I know what it's like to need people's attention, I guess I can only hope they understand I'm not clogging their profiles just because I want their votes...

I agree with Iceviper to the point that since interests are diverse, you can't just generalize and say everyone will just think they're bad lists.

And, well, while some do make an effort to make their lists and come up with things that are creative and such, add something that comes from their own minds or what-the-not, others just won't have the same regard, meaning we get a lot of the same things going on over and over again, not that I think anyone can actually do anything about it, which is unfortunate.
