Microsoft: If you can't beat them, copy them?

Microsoft started up its DOS era by stealing (copying) a rivals' operating system. And Windows itself has been copying and trying to catch up to Apple's OS for generations now.

So its no surprise that the Xbox division of Microsoft has filed for a patent to try and catch up to Nintendo Wii's runaway sales...

โ€œThe (wandโ€™s) architecture can utilize one or more sensor from a collection of sensors to determine an orientation or gesture in connection with the wand, and can further issue an instruction to update a state of an environmental component based upon the orientation.โ€

Sounds to me like Wiimote is coming for the Xbox360?

All of the big three (Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo) copy each other. Microsoft also ripped off the Wii with their new avatar system.

I will kill if the Wiimote becomes the X-mote or something like that. I hate it when companies copy each other. It's bull.

well, the Xbox-controller is also a ripoff of the Dreamcast-controller, which was a ripoff of the N64-controller...

by the way, Sony is developing a new controller that's much like the Wiimote, but can be used with the whole body (some mix between Wiimote and Eye Toy) iirc. if i wasn't so senile i could even post a link to the demonstration video they released a couple of months ago.

Wanna know something ironic. Apple stole the GUI idea from Xerox
Devious Phenomenon 15 years, 11 months ago at May 22 22:43 -
What else is ironic is that Apple is partly owned by Windows lmao, something like 1/6 or 1/16, can't remember; it might not even be a fraction, just anagreement, butlmao still

Who cares if microsoft steals the idea of a wiimote. The wii will be nothing without its individuality, and it'll probably just narrow it all down to a two horse race.

Wasn't Playstation flamed for ripping off the wiimote a couple of years ago? What happened to that?
Devious Phenomenon 15 years, 11 months ago at May 23 2:34 -
Idk,
To be honest,I don't really like the wii, first off, for 400 freaking dollars? screw that, maybe for a REALLY nice Xbox 360 or an AMAZING PS3, but for a wii? NO, mainly because you have to buy all those stupid controller pieces that are like 15-80$ each, the games are 25-90 each, screw that also, I don't think I'll miss the Wii failing, the only bonus would be selling my wii to someone who likes em so I can get a fortune if Nintendo stops making them

I love all the talk about the Wii failing and the Wii becoming a fad...

We're entering year three of a typical 5 or 6 year console cycle. Hmm, lets check sales for April 2009:

1. Nintendo DSi - 1.04 million
2. Nintendo Wii - 340 thousand
3. Nintendo DS - (figure unavailable, but they were in 3rd)
4. Microsoft X360 - 175 thousand
5. Sony PS2 - (figure unavailable, but they were in 5th)
6. Sony PS3 - 127 thousand
7. Sony PSP - 107 thousand

Yeah, Nintendo is really struggling *shrugs*

Notice the PS3 is once again outsold by the PS2? Is that Sony's strategy? To keep selling their old-gen console forever?

So until a month comes when the Wii is NOT outselling either the X360 or PS3 by a factor of almost 2:1, let's stop talking about the demise of this fad. My forecast is they will keep the lead all the way until the 8th generation of consoles. And with a new Zelda gaming coming perhaps in late 2009, its sales will go back into 3:1 rate over the Xbox360.

It's the only reason I bought a wii to play zelda.
Man those games are awesome.

Devious, the name of the company is "Microsoft".

Prelude, the Wii is only the top seller because it targeted the uptapped market of casuals, people who don't care about saving the princess or defeating the 9th circle of Xandor but would like to bowl by just swinging a little remote or use a balance board to lose weight.

Saving the princess? That's a Nintendo invention, CRT.

And a game is whatever you consider to be fun and entertaining. I'm a very seasoned and avid gamer, loving all the latest FPS titles, but you get a few friends over, plug in the Wii, do some bowling, tennis, or ski slalom, and its such a blast and everyone loves it. If I popped in 'Gears of War', everyone would say 'geek' and go to the bars instead. lol

The Wii made gaming fun again.

...and now you'll be able to bowl on an Xbox, only without the shitty graphics!

I owned a wii for a while. I don't think it made gaming fun again. The wii sports suite gets old so fast in a room full of gamers. I don't see how it could ever hold your attention for more than one round at a time. On the contrary, I've indulged in 8+ hour sessions of Pro Evo Footy or Halo with friends before. The problem with the wii being accessible for everyone means you spend hours telling them how not to throw the remote through your TV. Oh, and of course the fact that when non-gamers play games of a short amount of time, well that... sounds... faddish.

Well, PS3s have Dualshock3 controllers.
Those could be considered Wiimote ripoffs.
silent killer 15 years, 11 months ago at May 24 3:06 -
They are wiimote ripoffs. It was news when this current generation of consoles began.

Oh, and to anybody who was following E3 this year, Sony unveiled a true Wiimote ripoff. Although, Microsoft's Project Natal did seem very intriguing.
