marking lists as complete.

Maggie 12 years, 2 months ago at Mar 6 8:33 -
This is just a random thought, and I don't know if we already have this feature and I've missed it, or if this has been suggested before, but I thought I'd bring it up just in case it hasn't.

I think it'd be nice if we could distinguish in each list whether or not that list is incomplete/in progress or the opposite. It wouldn't have to be something that would be seen publicly; there's no benefit of other people seeing if the list is marked as such.

The benefit I do think this will have is to make it easier to build up lists without having to find the list amongst a bunch you're not even working on. For instance, when I'm building image lists and go to add the image to the list, it comes up with ALL my image lists to give me the option to choose from them all. And as I make more and more image lists that all require dozens or so pictures being added, it'd be nice if I didn't have to take the extra few seconds each time to make sure I'm selecting the right list to add to. Plus I often add to lists I don't mean to and then have to go and remove the images from that list.

So in conclusion of this babbling, I think it'd be useful to be able to mark lists as 'in progress' or 'complete' so that there are less to view when I'm trying to add to just one or two.

You can already set your list as 'Public' or 'Private' which is exactly the same thing as 'Finished' or 'In Progress'. If you are working on a list, just set is as 'Private' than when you check your lists, just click on 'Private' on the right side and you will have only the lists you are working on at this moment.

A couple of lists that I have put together I have left "Private" until I felt I had enough pictures to make a sufficiently sizable list. I will say though that I continue adding items/pictures to many lists, so I see them more as works in progress.

That doesn't solve the problem I was describing, Johanlefourbe. I'm not talking about viewing them in ALL your lists when you go to your profile. I'm talking about how when you go to an image, hit "add to list" on the right, and all of your image lists show up in the drop down menu. There's no way to distinguish between private and public in that place. And I have both finished public lists and unfinished ones, and same for private lists. I'm saying I want to be able to mark some as finished so they don't show up in that drop down menu, because it's a pain to scroll through and make sure I'm selecting the right list to add to.

This idea isn't something that'd be life altering and would probably only affect that one little section, but personally I'd find it very useful. It'd just be a small luxury.

@Maggie: After you create a new list, edit it and add a # sign as first character of the list name. Then it will show on top of the drop down menu. Remove the # when you're finished.

@johanlefourbe That is not the exact same thing, not at all. What Maggie is asking is to have a way that your list can be public but be marked as incomplete for her use. They are two entirely different things. There is no need to be rude when she asked a perfectly reasonable question.

I do something similar to The O.P. You can add any symbol or a number or even multiple spaces. Once the list is complete I change the name. However, I do think a feature like this would be good even so that others can see it.

Thanks The O.P.! I hadn't thought of that. It does make for a good temporary solution. But it has limited benefits. It's good for lists that are new that I only really need to work on once and then they're done. But there are certain lists that I'm always working on, and I'm not going to just take symbols in and out all the time; it'd be even more of a pain to do it that way for those particular lists.

And thanks JaimeLeah for the support!

@JaimLeah, I don't think I was rude in anyway. I don't make any lists with pics so that's why I didn't see the need of this option. Concerning standard lists, what I explained works just fine

I was sorting of thinking of something similar where we could "Archive" a list and it wouldn't show up on the various pull down windows. This could be useful for lists that you don't plan on updating in any way. Then under lists your "Archived" list would show up under a different category. You could then edit a list to pull it out of the "Archive".

So, basically it is almost the same idea.

I already have too many "Lists of Lists" and it would be nice to put the completed ones in a different area.

Yep, that's pretty much along the lines of what I was thinking. (: And I like the idea of being able to filter the archived lists like you do with people/movie/etc lists.

As long as I could separate them and be able to change the status on them as I needed, I'd be a happy camper, regardless of what it ends up getting called. And I'm not picky about whether or not other people would be able to see the status of the list.
