Manually adding a movie

Why isn't it possible to manually add a movie as I can do with books?

You can only add it if you use the URL from IMDb, same goes with TV Show.

Obviously I know that already. But I asked why that isn't possible. It should be.

It's to keep the database mostly free of duplicates and bad entries.

People would be adding unnecessary crap everywhere, so I find it to be a great system.

Then why is it allowed for books and games? That kinda speaks against what you just said. I think it should be possible to manually add movies. Not all movies are avaiable at Amazon or IMDb.

I find it to be a bad system that kinda speaks against itself.

The movies & tv sections were added after the other ones, if I was doing those sections again I might do things differently. Requiring a imdb number just keeps things simpler for now, it's possible I may allow adding of custom entries in the future.
You can add the movie to imdb if they do not have it www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?titletopfaq

I think it would be cool to have a section for movie shorts. Those at least would need to be added mannually were such a section (maybe a sub-section of movies?) created.

No need to add manually, there are already a lot of short movies on here and imdb e.g. www.listal.com/movies/short

That sure opens up a whole new world of listing opportunity for me!

I totally understand why Tom doesn't allow manual movie entries. It'd turn into a mess very quickly, especially with movies that are known under a number of different titles. IMDB isn't perfect and has plenty of incorrect info, but it's a damn good resource, and unless your tastes are *very* esoteric (like weird torture films from the 70's), I'd be willing to bet that you're misspelling the title or something.
If there were something as comprehensive as IMDB for games and books, it would probably go a long way toward cleaning up those sections.
That said, Tom, would it be possible to have you or someone else add some things that aren't in IMDB if I can provide sources to prove their existence and validate the title names? I've got roughly 20 or so pinky violence and yakuza films to add, though that number will probably grow as I work on both lists. I still want to double check the names just to be sure, but I figured I'd ask now since this topic popped up.

GameFAQs is quite an expansive game resource. I suggested it years back but can't recall why it wasn't as easy to adapt like IMDb.

Yeah, GameFAQs is actually pretty decent. I think the main problem is that, like you said, it's not as easy to adapt.
Using it would also mean a separate section for the main game entries, with a sub-section for the releases, kinda like we have now with DVDs and movies. I'm hoping those will be mushed together at some point though, like a main entry, with a detail of available releases nested inside that can be clicked on for details about that exact, specific item. Would be great for games, too.
