Love to read

tater03 17 years, 7 months ago at Oct 1 21:39 -
I love to read just about anything. I personally have never understood people when they say they don't like to read. I have learned so much about a variety of different things from just reading books.

Well, I sort of understand them... reading takes effort, especially at first. When you read a lot, you're able to absorb the words in a way that seems effortless. People who don't read much don't have that, and I think they get discoruaged. Which is such a shame because there is nothing in the world better than a good book.

Does anybody have any suggestions for beginning readers? By beginning, I don't mean people who are just learning to read, but people who don't read for recreation on a regular basis.

I might have some tips. For your first books, pick thin books, with larger print, and plenty of space between the lines. That way, you won't get discouraged because all the words just kind of blend together. Make sure that the subject interests you, and if you find you don't like it within a few pages, pick another book. After you get to where you enjoy reading, you might read that book again. Maybe start off with "Juvenile" books. These aren't all directed towards sixth graders. But like everything else, practice reading until your perfect at it. But unlike someother things, you can't get perfect at reading, so you just have to keep on practicing until you lose your eyesight!

I agree that you have to practice. And you know what - I agree that starting out with the juvenile books is a good idea. Read through the blurbs on the cover and find one that sounds interesting to you. Then muddle through. Then, if you enjoyed it, read it right through again.

One thing I have found to do if possible is pick a nice quiet place to read. Asho had alot of very good suggestions. When i mentioned that I don't understand people who don't like to read I was mainly talking about people like my husband who just cannot stand to read in general. Which is fine, it's just I enjoy reading so much that I would be lost if I couldn't read. I really did not mean to offend anyone. You all have a nice day.

I understand exactly what you mean, tater. I read all the time, and it just blows my mind that people can say they hate reading.

Hi. I'm bookworm. I'm new around here as as my nickname implies, I love to read. I watch very little television.
I'll read just about anything. I love Tess Gerrisen, Bently Little, Wally Lamb (although he only wrote 3 books I think), Dean Knootz, many more. I just started a book called SOPHIES WORLD. I don't have it handy as I write this and I can't remember the authors name. It's Different from my norm. Let ya know how it turns out.

Hello Bookworm, I haven't read Sophie's World yet but I have it in my to be read pile, I've heard really good things about it.

I also love to read but haven't been doing much of it lately. I'm on the computer too much, I guess. When I finish on the computer I need to rest my eyes. I have a stack of books waiting for me to read them.

I put "Sophies world" away in my "I might read this someday" pile. When I read a book, if I'm not absorbed by 100 pages, it goes into that. I picked up "Dr Death" by Jonathan Kellerman. I haven't read any of his books. Good choice?

I never understood people who didn't like to read either. My niece, who's about 9 years younger than me absolutely loathes reading. I still recall her whining about having to read 'To Kill a Mockingbird'.

I know, for me, it's difficult to find time to read for pleasure with all the reading I have for school and even when I do have spare time I don't automatically jump for a book. That isn't to say I don't enjoy reading; simply, I won't go out of my way to start a book. But once I do, I most assuredly enjoy the experience.

I've always loved reading, though I don't read as prolifically as I used to. But I've always enjoyed either learning new stuff, or just immersing myself in some other world for a few hours. You can't beat a good book, you really can't.

Maybe some of the people who say they don't like reading are saying so because they had to read stuff they didn't like at school?

I also think that this feeling against reading can become habitual if you struggled with reading initially.
