At this stage I've got to say Voxy and Doudouce are on to something. Most of the members who've been contributing from the begining have pretty much made their selection, the majority of new changes to the list are just members getting in on the ground floor of this list. I think soon enough you may have to set a closing time for this and just take the top 100 on the list, even if that means reaching down into the 2 and 3 nomination piles. Definitely check the figures first though, I notice one or two films in the wrong section of the list.

Between work and a social life, I deal with this list mate. So don't worry. I'm updating it all tonight.

Yes, its true. I'm trying to get these Ground Levellers in now to make a more varied outcome for the list. So yourself, Voxy, Double D and the other veterans just need to hold on while I try get more backings in from other members.

I got other methods to whittle up/down anyway.
vanious 17 years ago at May 7 14:58 -
alright, I trust your judgement on this

don't you need 5 backings before you unback 1?

I backed 4 earlier on with no unback....and its not a real film. I think I've done a Thilian and used a reference so obscure that nobody will see.

Backing:
American Beauty
Trainspotting
The Lion King
The Blues Brothers
Forrest Gump

Unbacking:
Life of Brian - Seriously, one Monty Python is enough.

Last minute Nomination.
A Time To Kill
All star cast! A thrilling courthouse drama about racism, love and vengeance. McConaughey actually performs well in this film. The story could be told a hundred different ways, buth this one hits the nail perfectly.

People are forgetting to explain why they are unbacking. TUT!
doudouce55 17 years ago at May 7 22:10 -
I'll back GB's nomination of A time to kill It is a great film, and a decent adaptation of Grisham's book too.
Also backing Willy Wonka (I know it has already made the cut, still want to add my vote!)

Taking a risk here, I just know I'll be getting bashed for this. I'll unback Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Seriously? This isn't a Top 100 movie. Besides, it put Jason Statham on the map, and he is *not* a good actor. No matter what he plays in.

Updated as of this point. Thanks to escafield & doudouce's recent unbackings, the list now lies at 68 instead of a mighty 70. Not far to go Kids!

The List
Phil 17 years ago at May 7 22:56 -
Of the stuff that's left off, there's not much I feel particularly strongly about that I've actually seen, but here goes...

4 More Decent Films to Be Seen
V for Vendetta
A Clockwork Orange
Twelve Monkeys
Howl's Moving Castle

Another that isn't good enough
Speed 2: Cruise Control - C'mon. It's not even the best film in the Speed franchise in any sense.
Phil 17 years ago at May 7 23:07 -
While it won't get in - not enough people've seen it - might I also add a personal favourite - Touching the Void. Seriously, it's one of the best non-fiction films around.

It tells the story of how in the mid-80's two young climbers attempted to reach the summit of Siula Grande in Peru, and how one managed to survive a broken leg, falling into a crevice and being left for dead to make the descent. The frankness of both protagonists narrating their story, the awful reality of the most difficult decision Yates ever had to make and the sublime photography - much in very difficult conditions - make this well worth seeing.

And if you haven't seen it, make the effort. Really.

AFIoscar 17 years ago at May 8 8:11 -
Backing: Sunset Boulevard, Unforgiven, Sixth Sense, Monster, Scarface

Unbacking: The Crow - An ok movie...plot and acting not so great in my humble opinion.

I would like to nominate There Will Be Blood - Incredible acting from Daniel-Day Lewis, beautiful cinematography and wonderful screenplay.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels
Life is Beautiful
Godzilla (1954)
2001: A Space Odyssey
La Dolce Vita

unbacking:

Shaun of the Dead

it's an ok comedy, but there are better comedies worth of top 100 out there.
Vix 17 years ago at May 8 9:43 -
Backing:
Shaun of the Dead
Jaws
Jurassic Park
The Evil Dead
Toy Story

Unbacking
Speed 2: Cruise Control - I know this was cited as what happens when Hollywood greed takes precedence over common sense but this movie does not need to be on the list.
doudouce55 17 years ago at May 8 10:20 -
Phil and Vix are absolutely right. Speed 2 shouldn't be on the list, so I am adding my unbacking for that one.

Nomination: Miracle on 34th Street (1947) It's dramatic, hysterical and rather touching. The screenplay is good, and not too trite -it did win an Oscar for its script! It is a worthwhile movie for the entire family, that tests children's faith in Santa Claus and allows them to continue believing in him.
Vix 17 years ago at May 8 10:56 -
Backing:
My Fair Lady
Double Indemnity
Glengarry Glen Ross
Beauty and the Beast
Some Like It Hot

A question about Sabrina: is it the 1954 version or the 1995 one?
doudouce55 17 years ago at May 8 11:46 -
I nominated the 1954 version, Vix. :)
GB, would you add (1954) to the title? Thank you!

I'll back Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels .. I love a good Guy Ritchie movie.
I'll also back The Crow. It had quite an impact on my youth and the soundtrack was like a whole new dimension of eargasms.

I am will add additional votes for:

Gone With The Wind
Schindler's List
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Glory
The Matrix

I am going to give a veto vote for Princess Mononoke. I think that if any anime deserves a spot it is Akira but not Princess Mononoke. I know with the huge anime fan population on here that this will likely start a riot...but i stand by my opinion.

Backing ..

Reservoir Dogs
The Usual Suspects
Lock, Stock & two Smoking Barrels
Leon: The Professional

Unbacking ..

Dawn of The Dead (1978) .. No way can this film be considered for an inclusion on a top 100 film list. It's not even the best zombie film, all IMHO of course.
Dionysian Child 17 years ago at May 8 18:16 -
To back....

Oldboy
Bladerunner
Blues Brothers
Gladiator
Brotherhood
AFIoscar 17 years ago at May 8 19:15 -
Backing: Gangs of New York, Full Metal Jacket, Taxi Driver, E.T. the Extra-Terresterial, To Kill A Mockingbird

Unbacking: Monty Python and the Holy Grail - The dry humour in this movie isn't my cup of tea, it takes an acquired taste. However, I do respect the movie since it is so widely loved by others.

Nominate: Planet of the Aples(1968) - Very memorable and captivating film.

backing gods must be crazy, casino, breakfast at tiffany's, run lola run, last king of scotland

unbacking 12 monkeys it's just too gory and very much limited to its audience. besides it was adapted from chris marker's original movie La Jetee which is much better and should have been nominated instead!
spiegel 17 years ago at May 11 14:38 -
Backing Akira
vanious 17 years ago at May 11 15:41 -
Eragon, do you understand the meaning of gore? I've seen that movie, must be over 6 times by now, and I can't think of a single scene in it that I would consider too graphic to show to my 10 year old cousins. The only part that has even remote gore would be the war, and even that is pretty tame. By comparison The Lord of the Rings is gory. Anyway, La Jetee is not so much a movie as a slide show, and it's like, 10 minutes long, and French, and certainly not the kind of thing the majority of audiences would appreciate. The list isn't about what're the best 100 movies, it's about what are the the top "Must See".

Planet of the Aples(1968)

Get your hands off me you damn dirty fruit! I'm backing it!

UPDATED!

I think everyone has done a good job backing and voting so I'm gonna call a deadline on this. By Wednesday 14th, get as many backs (OR NOMINATIONS) that you want in as possible. As I'm changing the format from then on. The total as of now rests at 81.

So close.
vanious 17 years ago at May 11 19:13 -
I've got a nomination. Gattaca. A grim look at a "utopian" future where Eugenics is the natural way of things. Social structure is based solely on one's DNA. What kind of job you have, life you live all comes down to how good your genes are. This movie makes us examine our society today and think about how we want it to be 20 years from now. Recomended for anyone.

Backing Goodfellas, Total Recall and Hot Fuzz

Unbacking 2001: A Space Odyssey, I know it`s a classic, but it honestly has to be the most boring Kubrick film available, not to mention that the constant white noise puts you to sleep. It is iconic, I'll grant you that, but it isn't what I'd recomend to my friends or family
Moderator
GemLil 17 years ago at May 11 19:27 -
Got to back

Goodfellas aswell, also;
Beauty and the Beast,
Shaun of the Dead,
Full Metal Jacket

Beauty and the Beastl is no where near my fav disney film; but it is a firm favourite amongst most people, and it took animation to a new level.
eragon 17 years ago at May 11 21:10 -
vanious, did I nominate La Jetee? no. I simply mentioned that 12 monkeys was adapted from that and that monkeys was too gory compared to its original short film.
yes I konw what gory means and to me that movie was gory I couldn't show it to my 10 and 12 years old cousins and nephews they were disgusted by it.
to me 12 Monkeys is not a must see, and if we are to consider recommending those 100 films to children, half the titles shouldn't be there -granted- and it would have to be done over. so again in my eyes 12 Monkeys is not worthy to be in a top100 list. but hey to each his own. ain't life beautiful we can make choices as to what we watch and what we like.

as for eragon being a shit movie, I agree and you didn't see a nomination for it did yOu

backing;
Ladyhawke. the 39 steps. the sting. dr zhivago. to kill a mockingbird

and unbacking Lost in Translation again maybe it's me but I found it no story there. I wasted 2 hours on that and wanted the time back when the movie was over
PvtCaboose91 17 years ago at May 12 3:21 -
