List image replacement

Onion Jack 10 years, 6 months ago at Nov 25 22:43 -
It seems that a lot of our work has been wasted on lists. For a while it looked like the promised automatic image replacement might have been implemented, but tonight we have found that a whole heap of our lists have been (seemingly) targeted and we are having to spend hours fixing the missing images.

Is there any plan to have replaced image codes automatically update, since the broken image icon points to the replacement image anyway, or are we just expected to search our lists for any changes?

Also, just what is the rule regarding images being posted in film galleries that already appear in person galleries, since it seems some have been removed from film galleries and the icon now directs to person gallery images instead. I was under the impression that if an image is posted in a person gallery, then it can also be posted in say, the appropriate film gallery.

Pretty soul-destroying to find a lot of our work decimated by... well... 'somebody'!

I do not see many deleted images on your account (only 1 in November and 1 back in August) so can you could link some of the images you are referring to?

I have implemented a change which will continue to show duplicated images in lists, please let me know if you see a list where a image is not visible.

@OJ As far as I know, you are absolutely right: if an image is posted in a person gallery, it can also be posted in the appropriate film gallery. Anyway, like Tom already said, please link some of the images you are referring to.

Thanks Tom, this was not in relation to images posted by us, but rather images posted by others that we used in lists. I hope your fix works, it took quite some time going through our Footsteps collection last night.

Thank OP, just as I thought, it seems people are interpreting the rules as they see fit, which is rather frustrating.

I can't provide links to any now, since we worked into the wee hours fixing the images that had vanished. I'm surprised my down arrow didn't go on strike!

Anyway, let's see if Tom's fix deals with the main issue, it's such a kick in the wotsits when we see numerous broken image icons inside frames.

Edit: I'm not sure if it was HG who posted the film images (she does the majority of that side of things) that were removed in favour of the person gallery images, as notifications are not always sent anyway, but the fact that the broken icons were pointing to the person galleries in a number of cases shows that one particular mod is favouring their own images regardless of where they are located. Even if posted by another, we generally use pictures from film galleries, because these are easier to check, we don't have the time to check thousands of person images to see if we can identify someone in an obscure film. Anyway, dealt with... until the next time!

Issue #1. Auto-replacement. I've just tried a little experiment and automatic replacement seems to work for me. I added this image as a Note to a Test list of mine, then I deleted the image (as it had been reported as a duplicate of a better one). As a result, the deleted image was correctly replaced in the list by the other pic.

I also tried with an *image* list. On that kind of list, the deleted pic was NOT replaced. However, my understanding is that you were talking about images in Notes, as in your "In the footsteps of..." lists, not image lists.

Issue #2. Duplicates of an image from a person gallery. I don't know what images have been deleted exactly, however also consider the possibility of an honest mistake, as Moderators have to go through lots of reported pics. Anyway, again, difficult to tell what happened unless a link is provided.

Onion Jack 10 years, 6 months ago at Nov 26 13:28 -
The pictures involved were posted by the moderator, hence my assumption that the moderator was the one responsible for the deletions, and it wasn't one or two instances, there were several cases of this happening with exactly the same pattern. One list was all but obliterated because of this, we've had to reluctantly point to the person gallery images to avoid a repeat. Some people wear the badge as much for their own good as much as for the good of the site, and that is an issue in my mind. Others are all but invisible (as moderators, not users), so you have to wonder why they have the badge at all.

Anyway, I'm veering into site politics, something that is best avoided... I've learnt that the hard way over the years.

Edit: since this issue has been resolved to the best available point, I won't comment again, I don't want to end up posting something that makes my Listal experience uncomfortable. As my site history suggests, I spend a ridiculous amount of my time here, so I must like something about the place.

Some more thoughts about my "experiment".
I tried to view the test list when I was not logged to Listal, and the replacement image was correctly displayed instead of the deleted one.
But then, I tried again after I logged to Listal, and now the link in the list still leads to the deleted copy. Maybe that's because I see it as a Moderator, though.
So, what do you see when you click on the B&W image in the first item of my Test list?

A broken link to
www.listal.com/viewimage/4254596
(deleted image)

or the "replacement" image
www.listal.com/viewimage/7683654
?

Also, my experiment is using two images both from the same movie gallery. I don't know if it would work the same if one of the images was from another type of gallery.

I'll reply since you are testing the fix:

The picture posted by Supernaut (7683654) three weeks ago, as you intended.

Good to see it works :)

And it would be perfect if it would also work for image lists - then I wouldn't have to guess what picture has disappeared.
