Last.FM

ya know, i tried it a few times (username is Prelude76) but I just can't get into it. I find it confusing to navigate around that site. I really want a web2.0 social music site, but I just can't seem to stick to using it for some reason.
So for now, I organize and catalog and rate all my songs offline using Media Monkey Gold software.

I used it once or twice. I must go back and fiddle with the thing some time.

ok, just refreshed my memory by logging into last.fm, and I remembered why I didnt get into it.
First off, I have to download some software so it can track on all my songs played, and adds them to my profile. second, there doesnt seem to be any way to add your favorite bands and/or tracks manually. third, just because I listen to a song doesnt mean I liked it, so to show most popular 'listened' tracks seems a bit flawed. and most importantly, so many bands have duplicate albums and duplicate or even triplicate tracks in their TOP TRACKS lists. ugh, that gets so annoying.
It seems to be more geared towards making you buy albums, rather than catalog your favorite bands and keep tracks of all your albums.
I used to love Pandora instead. It plays songs, and you give thumbs up or down, and it customizes it to your personal preference. It worked awesome, til they banned Canadians from using the site. ugh!
anyone know a way to fool pandora with a different IP, so I could use their player again? I really don't like option #2 - moving to the States. I dont feel like being drafted and sent over to Iran or China in 5 years time. lol

I'm not an active participant on last.fm ... There are way too many errors on the site and multiple artists with the same name skew your results and make the stats unreliable.... I have an account just for hte sake of friends and to see what they've been listening to lately.

I have an account but I forgot my password and really couldn't be bothered retrieving it. The site does nothing for me and the software you download doesn't help the situation. I think if they fixed up a lot of the problems it has I would consider going back there. Maybe.
Prelude, I'm curious, why did Pandora ban Canadians? That's a bit odd.

This is what I get when I try to visit Pandora's website:
that really really sucks. I loved Pandora.
Dear Pandora Visitor,
We are deeply, deeply sorry to say that due to licensing constraints, we can no longer allow access to Pandora for most listeners located outside of the U.S. We will continue to work diligently to realize the vision of a truly global Pandora, but for the time being we are required to restrict its use. We are very sad to have to do this, but there is no other alternative.
We believe that you are in Canada (your IP address appears to be --.--.--.--). If you believe we have made a mistake, we apologize and ask that you please contact us at pandora-support@pandora.com
If you are a paid subscriber, please contact us at pandora-support@pandora.com and we will issue a pro-rated refund to the credit card you used to sign up. If you have been using Pandora, we will keep a record of your existing stations and bookmarked artists and songs, so that when we are able to launch in your country, they will be waiting for you.
We will be notifying listeners as licensing agreements are established in individual countries. If you would like to be notified by email when Pandora is available in your country, please enter your email address below. The pace of global licensing is hard to predict, but we have the ultimate goal of being able to offer our service everywhere.
We share your disappointment and greatly appreciate your understanding.
Sincerely,
Tim Westergren
Founder

Same thing with television network websites that don't allow you to view their episodes online when you're outside of the US.

openpandora.blogspot.com/
This site has some good news for me! :)
Open Pandora is a windows open-source Pandora player, and they say step-by-step how to use TOR proxy routing to bypass the Pandora US-only rule.
Gonna try it out tonight. I've been missing my customized stations.

I don't really use it much, but I like the fact that it tracks my music in the background and I can look up all my tracks and stats when I like and find recommendations when I feel like something new.

I knew there was a username thread somewhere, but couldn't find it.
I only listen to music on my iPod, so I downloaded "iSproggler" which runs when I update my iPod and submits tracks I've listened to.
When I first used Last.fm, I had to install a plugin for Windows Media Player, and that was it.
Is there actually a use for last.fm other than tracking what you listen to?

I posted in the username thread, but I'm GrandAssault on last.fm. I think that site is awesome. It is so well presented and preserved. It is also quite useful for finding new artists and giving them a free listen before you commit to buying or downloading them. I've been a member for some years now, so I'm quite passionate about the palce!
The point of last.fm is to scrobble exactly what you listen to. The fact that someone you've listened to a lot might be top of your artists list, doesn't mean they're you favourites or anything like that, all it is is a list of what you listen to the most. If you use it over a long period of time it is a very good reflection of your listening tastes over the past x number of years, which I find very interesting to look back on.

I'm shesnotbleeding at last.fm. Have joined the listal group!

Last.fm is an amazing website. I've been using it for years now, ever since it started out as Audioscrobbler.
There are many uses of it, not just to track your music.
They have custom radio stations for every artist/tag/user, which plays in-browser or using their software. You get to learn about soooo much new music.
They have great recommendation system based on your stats, I've discovered a lot of artists that way. It's integrated with their online radio, so you can listen to your recommendations radio station.
Amazing user community. So many music lovers! Really knowledgeable people, great forums, blogs, etc. I met some of my very good friends there. Easy to find new people, too.
Users have their "musical neighbours".
Great API. For those of you who are into programming at all. Most of the data in your profile(your music stats, friends/neighbours lists, etc) is accessible via xml and other formats. Check out [Link removed - login to see], their development playground.
A lot of free music. Artists and labels upload music there for us to listen!
Really, I can go on forever ;)

To those of you who are complaining about duplicates over at last.fm. It's getting better, they are constantly working with online services like MusicBrainz and others... I haven't seen any duplicates in quite some time. It has been a big issue in the past, yes. But check them out now ;)
P.S.: They also have really cool Events system, which would even recommend you concerts in your area based on your music preferences! :)

There is a really good feature at Last.fm that I haven't seen at many other sites. When you search an artist, you can add many of their songs to a playlist. Even though this isn't really on demand radio, it's awfully close and you can listen to music you like for free.

The latest last.fm version already tracks and records your songs played on your ipod without the need for other software like iSproggler. I use it all the time and it works perfectly.
