John Lennon Day

www.johnlennonday.com/ is holding a petition to turn October 9th into John Lennon Day. I could say what I'd say, but one particular paragraph from the website describes the process.
Thoughts about this petition or John Lennon in General?
When .1% of humanity (6.4 million) sign this petition it will be sent to the heads and governing bodies of every country on Earth and the Secretary-General of the United Nations. Every time another .1% of humanity sign, it will again be sent to the heads and governing bodies of every country and the Secretary-General of the United Nations. When 1% of humanity have signed, following each country's own official governing process, we will ask them to proclaim every October 9th, John Lennon Day.

Thank you. The point is, of course, to honor John Lennon as a man and as the dreamer he was, but my school played an insane amount of Beatles songs today and I can see his messages.
In addition to this, any opposing viewpoints are welcome. I just had a debate with my brother this morning, as he is of the opinion that John Lennon is not deserving of his own international holiday. He's a huge Beatles fan, so it goes to show how these things work out (and how anything I do he'll do the opposite to a T). My main argument was that John Lennon put his messages out into the open and stood so that he might bring the sky closer to the world. His was that John Lennon didn't make a huge impact historically, and does not meet standard criteria for an international holiday. My counter was that impact has action behind it, and action has sincerity and standing. Also, that standard criteria means very little. His counter was that I was thick-headed. Our mother's was that he can express his opinion without insulting others.
Personally, I just have very little respect for my brother. I can respect most opposing opinions, so long as they have standing. But I signed the petition, because I feel John's messages and I think he was extremely honest in his solo song writing career. Though there are many certains who also deserve such an honor (some authors come to mind), a holiday with a meaning is due. The only one I really care for, as a holiday rather than the gifts distributed, is Halloween. It'd be exciting to have two good ones in the same month.
