The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson.
Published in 1912.
One of the first sci-fi horror novels. This book sticks in your head!

"The Spiral Road", they made a film of this book, but it does not do it justice.

Good luck finding it. Jan de Hartog was popular in the sixties, but wrote very few books, so not many people know of his work.
