"I know I'm forgetting something..."

I'm curious to know how a lot of you think of the films that you've seen in your lifetime and then rate/list them here. I know a lot of you have been Listal members for quite a while and have had some time to brainstorm.

It's impossible for me to sit at the computer and simply think of every single film I've ever seen. I know there are many more I've seen, but I just can't think of them! What do you guys do?

Do you...
*look at other members' lists/rated items and catch something you previously forgot to add?
*go to the local video store and jot down what's been forgotten?
*do an internet search (i.e., Wikipedia)?
*...?

Of course, this could apply to television shows, games, books, etc. All feedback is welcome.

When I first started I looked down the 'Most Watched' list got about 50 pages into it before I started finding less and less pagess with films I have seen.

Then I started looking by individual actor's filmographies. I found this the most effective method to tick off films that I've watched.

I was actually listing my movies prior to arriving here, so I basically started with a list of films I knew I'd seen because I was a very bored teenager and tracked down everything I could think of. I know there are a few I'm still missing, but they are just vague ideas of films, and wouldn't consider that enough to base a rating on.

i have a good memory, but it really helped me to track most (of course not all, i think that would be impossible after a certain amount of movies) of them after browsing the collected work of directors or actors. so i remembered for instance i watched some movie with Silvester Stallone and the grandma from Golden Girls, so i looked up Sly's movies and found the movie i was looking for. what's quite hard for me is that the germans tend to translate movie titles for the synchronized version to something completely unrelated to the original title. so if you remembered a german movie title of a foreign movie from your childhood, it's not that easy to find it again. but in that case the "aka Title search" from IMDB helps alot.

When I first got to Listal, I just listed everything I owned, and now I list things as I watch/buy them.

Occasionally, I'll do the "Rate Movies" for a few minutes and that tends to catch some I've seen ages ago.

You're all right: something like this takes time. Thanks for reminding me of this simple fact. ;)

What doesn't make matters any easier is that I'm a total completionist and don't feel quite right when something isn't finished or complete. One step at a time, though!

Thanks, everyone, for your advice. :)

The easiest way is to play the whole "6 degrees of separation" thing on a site like IMDB. Pick a favorite movie and then go through the filmography of the director, screenwriters, and actors. Then wash, rinse, and repeat with all the films listed there that you've seen. After a couple hours you'll have found dozens upon dozens of movies you'd forgotten you'd seen.

The rate movies section was where I got the bulk of mine, and then I scaled through the sections such as "Comedy films" rating all the ones I had seen etc. I feel the same though, there must be a lot missing!

I just began listing 'em,
not pressing the "public button" for the list until I came up with a list that seemed satisfactory.
Also, with the idea that it's a list that will be in flux, & therefore I can edit later, changing an entry or two.

Going through the 'Top Watched' movies section was a good tip. Thanks KCenturion.

I haven't added everything on listal as I already had a profile on another site (came here because that one is only for movies), but the way I do lists is by:
1. adding the movies I remember, then playing 6 degrees of separation,
2. looking at other lists, starting with Most Watched, then Most Favorited/Highest Rated,
3. checking lists randomly, from time to time, and adding things as I remember/discover movies I'd skipped.
