How about an e-newsletter?

The site's great. It really is bloody fantastic. The international attention? Maybe we should shake that up a little.

From my view it seems as if the primary tactic in luring new members to Listal has been to spread the word through widgets, techblog articles, affiliations with Digg.com and YouTube and all such like. I think what we should be doing is getting our present members more active.

Listal at quantcast.com

The statistics are pretty standard except we have a very small number of regulars and our addicts don't even own a percentage. The top algorithmic keywords do not match the site's overall purpose and tend to lead the lesser contributor here.

My suggestion is to start sending e-newsletters. Tell of recent updates and how the site's constantly improving, mentioning possible plans and inviting members to the groups section to discuss them. Include links to recent positive mentions of Listal. Divulge on contests and projects the community is working to raise steam. Give people reason to visit consistently and invite their friends. It's an easy and sociologically correct way to do it.

Yes it's been far too long since an email. I've got some big new features planned, I would like to send a email out at the beginning of next month.

The blog hasn't been updated because i just prefer just posting on the forums but I have been meaning to restart the blog and post new features on there.

I hope they actually contribute to the site though! Rate something please!

The e-newsletter would be monumental. A lot of the people on the website probably don't even venture near the groups to hear what Tom has to say/add anyway, let alone make their own suggestions. By putting the information in their inboxes it may create further interest.

Maybe the newsletter should have a listing of the winning review/list of the last month aswell...

Did anyone look at that link from Thilian? My heart sank on two things:

MASSIVE percentage of 12 to 17 year old demographic

and perhaps even worse:
Keyword Affinity
naruto jutsus 196.9x
naruto jutsu 162.5x
orochimaru 83.3x
jason voorhees 72.2x
naruto hand signs 71.4x
naruto online game 61.9x
naruto characters 55.0x
sonic and the secret rings 54.7x
itachi 50.6x
naruto 28.4x
holiday in handcuffs 18.9x
avatar the last airbender 18.8x
led zepplin 18.8x
halle berry 17.2x
david hyde pierce 17.0x

The main reasons we seem to be getting unique hits from google (and hence most new traffic) is goddamn naruto. excuse me while I go cry in a corner.

purge all the jutsu crap out of groups, and hog tie all the narutards and keep them locked in basement until next time a Google-bot visits us :)

Wipe out Anime and RC is the only solution.

That could make a first great article in the E-newsletter.

Right, firstly Prelude, up for that naruto/jutsu purge in anime and RC??? Ive got a bit of free time now Im going to sort that out.

My main concerns are these:
www.listal.com/groups/search/?query=bleach
and these:
www.listal.com/groups/search/?query=naruto

Secondly, I think adding a listal link to the links section of Wiki film pages might help a little.

Cna someone explain to me how that things claculates demographics? I.e. How does it know the ethnicity and income? Was it questions we answered when we signed up (and therefore quantcast is pulling from that), or is it a statistical guess?

Does Listal have its own Wiki page for starters? That would be helpful too. We could also block it so that only our members can edit it too.

I might crack on with those links on the weekend. Go through all the top series and franchises.

You Mods have your work cut out. Just a massive DI purge will work wonders for our net-cred.

Well I've already deleted more than I can count, and they keep coming....wave after wave of them. I'm gonna concentrate on deleted from RC now, and maybe the whole anime section should be deleted as soon as possible....we've got damage control to do here people!

Just found a 1,900 post Naruto thread!

You mean a page on wikipedia or a wiki on this site? There was a listal page added a couple of times to wikipedia but was deleted as not notable enough, although that was over a year ago now.

A fact we are quite relieved about.

I meant a Listal page on Wikipedia. Would be another avenue for the sites face being plastered over the internet.

A page on wikipedia, I think now all of us could get to together quite a substantial article nowdays.

As for the naruto traffic, I see your point, buts it still not a keyword we want to assosiate with the site surely?
Phil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 14:47 -
Last time it fell foul of the notability guidelines on Wikipedia - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WEB

If you can write it in a way that suggests that it is somehow different and/or give citations to reviews by well known publications (and we're probably talking cNet, The Register, Slashdot etc rather than xxxx's blog) then it should be ok.

GemLil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 14:53 -
Phil, explain your citations point (im being a bit thick), what would citations be given for and what sources would be drawn upon?!

Im also talking about games and film etc on wiki, i.e:

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indiana_jones

The external links could do witha listal link dont you think?

I was thinking of promoting certain top-notch custom lists over on other gaming forums. Best strategy we have is to make gamers interested in our Games section, enough for them to visit, contribute, and tell all their fellow gamers. and do the same for music, and movies, and books.

I would imagine it would get deleted pretty quickly, there are plenty of major movie sites that are already not linked (e.g. rottentomatoes)

There are a few pages with listal links on them though :

www.google.com/search?hl=en&safe=off&q=+site:en.wikipedia.org+wikipedia+listal

I think some of the more original content on here (e.g. some of the lists) would be more likely to not get deleted from wikipedia.

If thats your plan Prelude, I think we should get a few more series lists up with all the trimmings (notes, pics). Find the 30 biggest franchises and collect all the best lists of them before we go galivanting off into the wild.

GTA, MGS, Final Fantasy, Zelda, Sims, Command and Conquer, Halo, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Star Wars, Pokemon etc.

Make a proper f*cking effort before we head out. On the weekend, I think I'll contribute by making a decent and comprehensive C&C list if no one else has put the hours in so far.

GemLil - I was talking about an actual Listal article on wikipedia... i.e. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Listal (Which someone appears to have created on Tuesday I note).

The article as it is doesn't say why Listal is "notable", and if/when someone on there spots it they'll probably delete it again because it's missing any references to what's different about it from other cataloging sites.

GemLil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 15:32 -
Oh I realise you were talking about an actual article on wiki. I just meant, in the body of text, who would the sources be, that one might cite?

Seaworth 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 15:39 -
That page is well degrading. We're gonna have to go over it with a fine tooth-comb. We need to promote this place better than that!
Phil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 15:46 -
Exactly :o)

Generally web specific articles need to be about a website with pretty large penetration (see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last.FM which has a reasonable number of citations in the main/history bits) or have created some kind of "buzz" around them by doing something different. Listal certainly hasn't got the penetration to be "notable" as far as the Wikipedians are concerned, and there's no undercurrent of buzz at the moment that I'm aware of (although I could be wrong). However, any positive reviews and the like (online or offline) which could be referenced would be very useful.

Hometime now!

Listal got and honorable mention in the seomoz web2.0 awards last year :
www.seomoz.org/web2.0#cat_63

The biggest blogs it's been mentioned in are : Techcrunch, lifehacker, mashable here's some other links :

Mentioned in webuser magazine (kind of old now though) : www.webuser.co.uk/sites/site_review.php?rev_id=3690

No idea how much these links qualify as notability but it's something at least.
Phil 16 years, 11 months ago at May 22 17:37 -
I'd imagine the magazine, the award and the book stuff would be particularly useful. I can't say I know what they're looking for any more than anyone else to be honest, and while the last.fm article I linked to is probably more than this site needs, it's probably a good example to work from :)

The traffic from naruto related keywords is actually fairly minimal these days.

That is a good thing, but the fact that these closely related terms have invited the most members here despite a wealth of other represented media really lets you know listal needs more attention.
Cna someone explain to me how that things claculates demographics? I.e. How does it know the ethnicity and income? Was it questions we answered when we signed up (and therefore quantcast is pulling from that), or is it a statistical guess?

I'm not the biggest expert on this issue. I know all in all it's algorithm, the internet equivalent of fate. Google uses it now for accuracy and to avoid manmade "search engine bombs". George Jr.'s official presidential profile, for instance, appeared at one point as the first response for failure. People entered the a href="" link for it in mass and included "failure" as the URL title, which then affected search engine response but now does not. That means the statistics on quantcast are unfortunately as accurate as can be.
