With movies in the past, they were limited in special effects. The story was a little closer to plausible, and that's what was scary.

Some good has come out of the recent decades with better makeup and equipment and such.

Some are like Grave Encounters. Some aren't like Piranha.

I think now there's little build-up or suspense. In the past, they let your imagination take you...there was suspense, loads of it. Now they just throw it right in your face and try to gross you out (like with the Saw movies or Final Destination).
They sacrificed story and mood for special effects on many. Sad but true.

The only modern Horror Movies I found scary, were Grace Encounters, Paranormal Activity 1, and Insidious. Most horror films nowadays suck

I agree with Fortunato: too many horror films today go for the gore and nothing else. Asian movies can still be scary, or at least unsettling. I don't necessarily need to feel fright/tension to enjoy a horror movie, that's why I enjoyed Final Destination. The inventivity of the deaths, the anticipation and fake-outs were fun... before the series ran it all into the ground by the 57th movie or how many there are by now.

On the other hand, several movies I've found terrifying at first watch are... yeah, not quite as scary as when I was a kid. I can't believe I had nightmares over Poltergeist and King's It. -.-

I agree, Shini! Many films I saw as a kid that scared the hell out of me...just didn't when I saw them years later. I still found Poltergeist a good movie (I watched it just a few weeks ago again) but not scary. And, Yes, much of Asian horror cinema is very unsettling and creepy. Hollywood could take a page from their book, if you ask me.

Insidious was a pretty good scary movie, try watching it with headphones in the dark then tell me how horror movies aren't scary these days.
