Honest question about DLing

Ashley Winchester 10 years, 9 months ago at Jul 12 21:33 -
Hi, I typically don't visit the TV section of the forums as I'm usually more focused on games and music. However, I've been kind of thinking about some of my friends activities and I just have to scratch my head.

Now, first of all I don't want anyone to think that I'm a saint. Back when I was in high school my friends and I would DL any music we could get out hands on for free. However, after I got out of school and had more expendable income I kind of became more focused on obtaining legitimate copies of the music/shows I liked as I like to collect and support things. I haven't DLed through back alley means in years... I don't even know WHAT programs you would use these days... but I'm kind of kind of curious as to what the status quo's opinion on this is.

My friends have a high speed internet and continue to DL episodes of their favorite TV shows... but I just don't see WHY you would bother doing that. I mean haven't services like Netficks and Hulu made streaming insanely affordable? I mean it's only like $8-10 bucks a month right? I don't think they have a cap - or if they do it's really high as they love their freakin internet - but I just don't understand if you can afford boss internet why you just wouldn't just spend that small amount of money to elevate the fact you could get a fine. I mean they already got in trouble for DLing fan-translated episodes of Bleach from Japan.

So I guess what I'm asking (not to be judgmental but I guess I am) is is there any excuse to still be doing this when legitimate streaming services have come so far?

Not knowing these people personally, I can only guess, but perhaps they simply feel a thrill from doing this because they know it's illegal. *shrug*

I have Netflix myself and, yes, it's only $8 a month and you watch however much you wish to. Seems a small price to pay to watch endless hours of television programs (and movies).

So, I agree with you; illegal downloading is just plain stupid and certainly not worth the risk of a fine and possibly even loss of service from an internet provider, too.

Thanks for your reply. Again, I wasn't trying to act like the morality police but the whole thing just makes little sense to me....

In some area's of the world streaming is horrible consistent lag no matter how good your connection also some places get TV shows on their streaming services weeks and some times months after they have been aired here in the US these are just some of the reasoning way people choose to pirate movies, tv shows, video games, etc.

the internet was a free for all and the general concept of the thing is that information is readily available to all ...for free - personally I think the copyright laws need revamping as the concept has been abused...the original concept was that the creator had rights for a short period of time to enable him to capitilise but not OWN his idea/creation

also to compare a download of a film captured at low resolution to the cinema experience is just stupid....they are different things!

and are we actually depriving the creators of money? not really as we only have a finite amount we spend

if you enjoy films I guarantee you are spending money but being more conscious of where you spend it - quality films will get the money

Lastly it can be damn difficult to find some stuff through legal means
