Half way through 2011. Best film of year so far?

We're officially half way into 2011. What has been your favourite film of 2011 so far (only films that have been released in 2011)?

Didn't see anything great until now (I hope I'll see 'The Tree of life' next week)
Now, my favorite would be : Rango

I was between 2 but one was release on 2010, so I have to say Unknown.

One of the worst years that I have memory so far, nothing outstanding, few movies that are even interesting, I don't remember anything remarkable to mention. I still haven't seen what seems to be most people's favorite so far though, Source Code.

I have seen "The Tree of Life" and it is my new favorite for this year!
@Veed, from time to time, there is always someone saying 'it is one of the worst years, all the movies are bad,...". Personally, I think it is nonsense, every year, they produce 1000s and 1000s of movies all over the world and every year, you have some amazing movies. Maybe you have to look more carefully that's all...

If you look at what it's popular right now (thus the most easily accessible material), and compare it to what came out last year around the same time, (a year also criticized a lot by many folk) there's a bigger lack of quality right now. At least the way I see it. This is the first time I truly say something like this, because all years prior to this one (especially 2008) had a lot more interesting material.
Of course this is just personal preference, but that's what these topics are about. Truth be told, I haven't really watched many movies this year though, but there's so many blockbusters and superhero stuff coming out that it makes me lose faith in the medium.

First, I think it's certainly a better first half of the year than last year.
Second, blockbusters and superhero movies are coming out because that's what summer is all about! The really good stuff doesn't come out until the fall...

Agree with Stehako! In fact, best first half of a year for a very long time!

Oddly enough, it's Bridesmaids. Still have to watch a more than a handful from 2011, but that one tops my list so far.

I would like to do a top ten, too. I've seen 18 films from 2011 so far; but the top 10 still holds quite the quality:
1. Super 8
2. Project Nim
3. The General's Orders #9
4. The Beginners
5. Midnight in Paris
6. Source Code
7. The Conspirator
8. Cedar Rapids
9. Kill the Irishman
10. Submarine
1. Super 8
2. Project Nim
3. The General's Orders #9
4. The Beginners
5. Midnight in Paris
6. Source Code
7. The Conspirator
8. Cedar Rapids
9. Kill the Irishman
10. Submarine

I'm WAY behind on movies this year, but so far Rubber is my favorite film. Veed, if you're looking for something with quality and originality you should check it out.

I have only seen three so far - Super 8, Pirates Of The Caribbean and Green Hornet
and I liked them in that order -
I don't get out to movies in the theater as much as I used to -
However, I do need to get off my butt and go to some movies this summer,
because they do sound like they are better than last years summer movies.

@phillydude - I've only seen 3 films so far this year too (the other 2 being X-men and Thor). Thanks for letting me know I'm not alone on that!

I haven't seen many that came out this year, but here they best to worst:
1. Super 8
2. Water for Elephants
3. Scream 4
4. Green Hornet
5. X-Men: First Class
6. Just Go With It
7. The Roommate
8. Pirates: Stranger Tides
X-Men was still good, after that I didn't like them. I wouldn't be surprised if Pirates was the worst movie I will see this year.
And I agree that the summer is always full of big blockbusters, superhero and action flicks with all the big names, that aren't always great quality. The movies get better in the fall and winter. Higher quality, more subtle, just better overall. And the scary ones will start coming out, those are usually worth a watch.

We are reaching the end of the year and 'The Tree of life' is still and by far my favorite movie.
I wonder what if SJMJ91's favorite movie is still 'Source code', 6 months later.

Nope. My favourite films of 2011 are Hugo, The Tree Of Life, Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part II, Tyrannosaur and We Need To Talk About Kevin so far. So, they're very different now. Still got plenty to see.

is 'Hugo' your favorite movie so far ?

Paul and nearing the end of 2011 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

@SJMJ91, I'm really eager to check this one out but it will be released only in Februari in the Netherlands...

It's absolutely brilliant! It's beyond ANYTHING that Scorsese has done previously and is one of his best films.

^^Yep, it's true.^^
I think Hugo and Drive will be the two movies from 2011 that will be remembered better than anything else as time goes on.
An argument can be made that The Tree of Life will go down as a great film too, though I personally didn't have much use for it.
And while I haven't seen it yet, I simply don't see anyway around The Artist being a MAJOR milestone in 2011 cinema, and probably cinema in general.
The rest? Sure there are some other pretty great movies out there, but, at least as far as English language films go, I think those 4 are in their own league.

Oh, and while I haven't seen Shame yet either, I fully expect that to get a Criterion Collection release and become at least somewhat inducted into that vague "film canon", whatever that may be exactly.

Only 5 more days till 2012
I see some are rating "The Tree Of Life" their best movie of 2011
I thought it was a total waste of time by far the worst movie of 2011
And perhaps all time

Tree of Life was a waste of time, but good to get some sleep =)

Drive.
The Debt.

Ides of March, Sherlock Holmes GOS, and Drive. But that's merely my opinion.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is another one, I really liked it

Ides of March, Sherlock Holmes GOS, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo ... still on my watchlist... ^^

I can understand that someone would say that 'the Tree of life' was pretty bad but to call it the worst movie ever made is quite ridiculous. Did you see 'Freddy got fingered', 'The son of the mask' or 'cool as ice'? Those movies are really terrible and among the worst movies ever made and to compare 'The tree of life' with such movies is simply pathetic.

@Johanefourbe - I absolutely agree with that. I think people would like The Tree Of Life like 2001: A Space Odyssey and Solyaris (although I disliked the latter).
What a lot of people really don't realise is that film is an art as well as entertainment.

it´s not the worst movie ever made, not even by a long shot! but it enters on the most overrated and over-hyped.
