William Gaddis is the greatest American author imo, and, while he is revered in literary circles, he's little know anywhere else. "The Recognitions" is perhaps the most signifigant work of prose ever set down

Totally agree with Michael Marshall Smith. Though if two of us know him, is he really unknown? ;)

I like Joe Abercrombie, though I don't know if he's "unknown." I did he read his entire First Law series in less than a week, one of the few things I've read in a while that I could not put down.
