the giraffe's music recommendations thread

the giraffe 12 years, 2 months ago at Feb 23 22:40 -
Since I neglected to keep a Song of the Week list for 2013 like I had last year, I thought I'd just keep a thread to talk about whatever song/album I'm currently obsessing over. I post a link, you can check it out & come back & let me know what you think. And if you come across something YOU want to recommend I check out, feel free to do so. I'm always up for some good new music, so long as it's not top 40 disposable crap. Heh.

Today's recommendation: Untamed Beast by Sallie Ford & the Sound Outside

I originally found this one on AOL's Spinner page, which for some reason hasn't been working for me most of this week. Fortunately I found the above link which works just as well. Their music is reminiscent of '50s rock n roll with some blues thrown in, and it's been rocking my world all week long. I've easily listened to it 20 times so far & have bought a copy to keep it going.

Unsure how long the soundcloud player at that link will continue to work, so the sooner you check it out the better. ;)

Today's recommendation: People, Hell and Angels by Jimi Hendrix

Shouldn't require any explanation, other than that it's worth listening to. Sometimes unearthed material is iffy, but not in this case. The album drops March 5th, so I'd guess it'll be available to stream until then.

Today's recommendation: The Next Day by David Bowie

Wasn't sure a new Bowie album would be good, especially since the new single was good but not exceptional. But wow, I'm really digging this one.

Awesome thread you got here bro.

Let's pray People, Hell and Angels isn't another album of shitty demos that Queen Janie is just putting out to make a few dollars off of. I was very disappointed with the last one; Valley's of Neptune. Most of that album was just demos and songs that were half way done, that seemed more and more like it was just released as a cheap cash in. There was a few good songs on there, but that's how it goes with those type of albums.

I already feel like they are scrapping the bottom of the barrel with People, Hell, and Angels. Have you heard of the album 'Black Gold'?. It's one of the albums he was working on when he died. Black Gold was supposedly finished. it was the Band of Gypsys studio album that he promised Capitol Records under his contract. Machine Gun is on it, so is Power of Love. In the 70's they actually used the unreleased version of Machine Gun in one of those cheap cash in albums that Capitol remixed, and that version of Machine Gun clearly had different lyrics. I documented this in a list a while back, it was on "Midnight Lightning". I feel like Janie is going to crap the bottom of the barrel like she did with Valley's of Neptune when she has the Black Gold album sessions just sitting there and will never release it. The Black Gold album is the holy grail of all Hendrix bootlegs, people have sought after it for decades.

First Rays of the Rising Sun I think is the only that is actually real "unreleased" stuff that's not half done demos. That is the album he was working on when he died. That is a great record that proves he probably would have moved into the Funk/R&B category in the 70's as his new music was becoming more and more increasingly in that zone.

If you want a good example of Janie Hendrix milking his name and music, check out the BBC Sessions remaster. It was totally remastered and sold off with "unreleased bonus track" which turned out to be a crappy TV version/studio mix of Burning of the Midnight Lamp, and the DVD that came with it didn't even have the legendary BBC performances on them, just crappy interviews for 13 minutes. ALL the DVD's in the Hendrix remasters from Experience Hendrix/Legacy Records were just crappy interviews about 4-5 songs on each album. They pick just a handful of songs, instead of running through the entire track list. If they did that, I think it would be different, you know explain the history of each song, the story rather than just a few. The only one that had any real depth was the one with the Blues cd, that explained his influences.

To me People, Hell, and Angels sounds pretty well polished. According to the wiki page for this album, these songs came from the First Rays of the Rising Sun sessions plus some others done around the same time. So I guess you'll be well familiar with these. I can definitely hear the Funk/R&B sound you mentioned in there.

Haven't heard the others you mentioned, but for the most part it doesn't sound like I've missed much. ;)

If it's from the First Rays of the Rising Sun, it's probably outtakes, I am guessing. Isn't Earth Blues on this album? That was on First Rays of the Rising Sun. It's really not a bad album. A few of the tracks I think he plays Bass on himself (and the Bass is out of tune in one of those songs LOL). Yeah it's crazy to imagine how much he would have got into the funk era of the 70's, since he was moving in that direction.

The Blues cd for my money is the best album they ever released of Hendrix unreleased songs and outtakes. Those covers on that album are just blazing. Catfish Blues, and Born Under A Bad Sign, Mannish Boy. I really liked the early mix of Voodoo Chile on there. You can tell where they put Steve Winwood in the song for the final mix on Electric Ladyland (Voodoo Chile the 15 minute version, not the 'Slight Return' short and different song that everyone confuses it with)

If you listen to Born Under A Bad Sign, you'll probably notice the solo work was later on adapted to Power of Love on the Band of Gypsys record. And that wild Doublestop/hammer on(for the guitar players out there) technique he does as a lead was later on adapted as rhythm in Message to Love on that same album (after adding several more notes and chord changes).

Well I got to listen to the new Hendrix album today, and I can tell you right now it is NOT unreleased songs. It's a total rip off.

The album could have been named Valley's of Neptune Part. II it is just like that record.

Most of the songs are incomplete inferior versions of previously released songs. You can buy the album if you're like me and just have to have it for the sake of it being in your collection. If you're not a die hard collector or super Hendrix fan, avoid this one at all cost, and go with the Jimi Blues or First Rays Of the Rising Sun albums. There is even "cut/paste" stuff, mark my words it is a total rip off.

I was very skeptical of this album right away, because I knew some of the songs were NOT unreleased. For example 'Hear My Train Comin' ' this song was released twice on the Jimi Blues album, and even another version of the Valleys of Neptune CD I have mentioned. How many more times do we need this song released? Not counting the fact it was on Martin Scorcese's Blues series albums, and also in the Experience box set. This version of the song is not even the real one. It's done with the Band of Gypsys lineup, and the first time they played it. By first time, it's basically a practice or warm up session. Another song that had been released several times before is Izabella. That song has been released several times. Another one is Bleeding Heart, this was on Valleys of Neptune, Blues, and another record.

When I mentioned "cut/paste" the song Crash Landing is what I am talking about. Along with another track on here, they cut a solo from a jam and pasted it on here.

A lot of the tracks have no vocals and are particularly just jam sessions. Some of the songs are really outtake versions of later songs. Inside Out is really an outtake of the song Easy Rider, and they should have named it that.

Just so you know, Queen Janie signed a deal to release 10 albums of scraping the bottom of the barrel and teasing us with "unreleased" Hendrix tracks. Sadly this will probably be the 1st or 2nd (counting Valleys of Neptune) of horrible cheap cash ins.

Awhile back I put the album 'Midnight Lightning' on a list of albums I was seeking. I've had a lot of messages about that album and the studio dubbed Hendrix albums that Capitol released in the 70's and just so you know the song 'Hey Gypsy Boy' and I know there's another one but I can't remember it, this was originally released on one of those studio remixed albums, and this time it is the original, so that is the only good part.

AVOID THIS ALBUM if you are a casual listener. if you really want some "unreleased" stuff buy the Blues album or First Rays of the Rising Sun. Those are the only TRUE unreleased stuff you will find that is not shitty demos and outtakes.

Janie pisses me off so much. You know, they have the master takes to that album Midnight Lightning. It has 2 of the most sought after songs by Hendrix fans; Machine Gun and the title track. Janie could just release those original masters like she did Hey Gypsy Boy but that might hurt her financially.

I am going to make a list called the Queen Janie Hendrix Experience and detail to my readers just how much she has fucked up Jimi's catalog since she got possession of it. Just to make a note; if anyone was wondering, she's not blood related to him. She was his adopted sister. In his last phone calls to his brother and father, he couldn't even remember her name! She should not own his music at all.

Do not buy this album. It is for collectors only, and even with that I'd rather spend 12 bucks on a better album than this.

It's Friday so I'm listening to something fun to kick off my weekend: Gizmodgery by Self

All the songs were composed & recorded using a variety of toy instruments, which lends a childlike vibe to the songs. It's an old favorite of mine from an artist that never got his chance to enjoy any major success, though I've always believed he should have. Oh yeah, similar to NIN this artist - Self - is basically one guy's project, though over time he let some of the same musicians work on subsequent releases.

Anyway, give it a listen & have a good weekend!

@13th moody grape - Thanks for the recs (and yes, they're welcome)! As a long-time NIN fan I'm sad to report that I'm just not into How to Destroy Angels. The first EP was all right, but the 2nd EP I couldn't get into & the new album I never finished listening to all of despite a couple attempts. The others, however, I'll look into.

Today's recommendation: The Panic and the Permanence by Camera

That'll give you the Soundcloud stream of it on the band's website, but I originally came across it over on AOL's Spinner. I'm hearing lots of influence from bands I dig in their sound, and after listening to it a few times tonight I'm liking it. It's possible I'll change my mind though as I haven't been able to give it my full attention to determine how much of their own identity they have. I do, however, really dig the lines "It smells like something that certainly isn't spirit/It will contaminate you if you ever, ever go near it/Here on Pop Radio 101" in "Pop Radio 101".

Today's recommendation: The Place Beyond the Pines Soundtrack by Mike Patton

I'm very interested in seeing this movie, so I checked out the soundtrack after I found out it's streaming in its entirety on Pitchfork. I already knew Mike Patton was working on it so that too was a draw, and I'm digging what he's come up with even though it's not like anything else I've heard from him.

Tonight's recommendation: "My God Is the Sun" by Queens of the Stone Age

First new song from their forthcoming album, and man does it kick ass on so many levels.

Today/tonight/maybe all week I'll be listening to lots of Deftones, specifically their early albums (Adrenaline, Around the Fur, and White Pony) in honor of the passing of their original bassist Chi Cheng. His heart gave out on April 13th, and he'd been trying to overcome paralysis from a car accident back in 2008. Glad he's finally free, but it's a sad loss for any long-time Deftones fan and all who knew him. I had the good fortune to meet him a few times & he was always very nice & down-to-earth.

State by Todd Rundgren released a few weeks ago

a few tracks

www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGIGK7TpxxQ

www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGw0lU8nqKk

If this is a good representation then Rundgren has fully embraced electronica and pop dance stuff which he has always been dabbling in

The Runt has always thrown curve balls since the start in the 70s shifting from genre to genre with no real care for selling out or being popular

Wow been a while now since I've posted anything here. This week I'm in love with Kirin J. Callinan's Embracism.

Recommended if you like: David Bowie, Nick Cave/The Birthday Party, or Swans

This week I'm obsessed with an album from a band from my former hometown, Dallas, TX. The general consensus is that their music is a mix of stoner rock & shoegaze, which I can understand now that I've heard them. What I don't get is how I've been unaware of them until now.

True Widow: Circumambulation

This album is currently in the running for album of the year from me.

OK, so back in the '90s there was a little band from Dallas, TX, called Tripping Daisy & they were Amazing and far better than their few "hit" singles would suggest. I loved them & saw them many times & even became friends with them. Then their lead guitarist died & they broke up, and some of them went on to form The Polyphonic Spree. I never got into TPS, partly due to the fact I couldn't get over Tripping Daisy being gone when they first started playing, and the rest because the music wasn't to my taste.

So imagine my surprise when I dropped by Pitchfork today, gave their new album a shot & couldn't quit listening to it. And a check with some of my friends with similar feelings about TPS have agreed with me, so it appears I'm not crazy.

Check it out: The Polyphonic Spree: Yes, It's True
