I asked the question over in anime, but it's like talking to the inmates from 'One flew over the cuckoo's nest' - I feel I might get better responses from FULLY DEVELOPED brains if I cross-post my query here as well:

here's my question:

Thilian said Castle of Cagliostro, Akira, and Steamboy which I would have to disagree for family movies since have a bunch of blood and swearing.
It looks like you've a majority of Studio Ghibli films but have you seen Nausicaรค of the Valley of Wind, Pom Poko, Grave of the Fireflies, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Whisper of the Heart, The Cat Returns?
Some others might be Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress.
Other then those it's had to find family friendly animes.

Well the rest isn't hentai just more adult oriented like violence, blood, swearing.
Think of the movies from Studio Ghibli as G-PG13 and most of the rest are R with few as PG13.

While it doesn't have the production level of Studio Ghibli, you may enjoy the Lupin III movies. I don't remember them having a large amount of violence/swearing, but its been a while since I've seen them so you may want to check it out first before showing them to kids. You will probably also like Animal Treasure Island and Puss 'N' Boots. Both are some of Miyazaki's earlier work.

cross-posting my reply from the anime section (in case you don't see it in the mass of emptiness), I leave for a week and intelligent discussion there almost nearly dissipates.
Like these or something?

This is also worth mentioning though a bit older perhaps? Still worth watching

Those are the only ones that come to mind at the moment that I have watched but there's plenty more (probably).

Also worth checking out are those Sanrio films. If you can find them.

Castle of Cagliostro is a perfectly good family movie, just watch it with the Japanese audio and English subtitles and avoid the English dub like the plague.

Most of the Lupin III movies play like Bond movies; some are edgier than others though.

Not anime, but perhaps you should check out Watership Down. The Triplets of Belleville, The Last Unicorn, or Kirikou and the Sorceress.

Also consider Justice League: New Frontier, it's rated PG-13, but it's very good.

More anime:
Junker Come Here, Millennium Actress, The Place Promised In Our Early Days, R.O.D.: Read Or Die (plays a lot like a superhero movie), Slayers: The Motion Picture, A Tree of Palme, and Wicked City (kidding). Once again, you'll be much happier if you watch these with the Japanese audio and English subtitles.

There's some others, like Brave Story or Tekkon Kinkreet, but those aren't available R1 yet.

Eww. A Tree of Palme sucked majorly in my opinion. It was just really really boring and the characters could have died in a fire for all I cared. The plot was hard to follow too (heck, either I fell asleep, which is very likely, or they just had some scenes cut out entirely!). But it was pretty looking I suppose for some people.

Haha? Satoshi Kon making "family" oriented films? Millennium Actress I wouldn't really recommend, it's a good movie don't get me wrong but not really something you'd watch with the whole family, unless you dig that type of thing. Maybe something like Tokyo Godfathers might fare slightly better but it's still a bit for an older crowd. Just don't go watching Perfect Blue or something and expect it to be for the children. @_@
