GB & UK

Moderator

Is there really a need for both: Great Britain & United Kingdom?

Can't we just make it United Kingdom? Inc Northern Ireland is the only difference between the names so why not condense it?

Either that or make England, Wales, Scotland and NI seperate countries.

hmm up to tom but I'm for the separate countries

I really did not realize you were referring to "on listal" and thought this was a debate about the real definition of the countries! I was ready to come in guns blazing and say we should just be England and forget them, or invade them and declare them all England! Its our Island for hells sake, who do they think they are?

OI! I find that very very ignorant

well, i hope i won't hurt anyone's feelings, but as it is, the only official country (albeit having own soccer teams and the like) up on the "island" is the united kingdom (including northern ireland). and as such it should be imho defined on listal (until scottland, wales or northern ireland get separate countries ;)).
tartan_skirt 18 years, 4 months ago at Mar 14 22:43 -
Hey, Scotland is a country. *shakes fist*

:P

I'd rather there were individual listings for each country, (i.e. Scotland, England, Wales, Northern Ireland). I mentioned this quite some time ago along with the notion that having both GB and UK options was a bit on the pointless side.

Scotland, a country?

Give the brits some respect. They're just wankers. The scots, on the other hand, are COLONIZED by wankers. They can't even find a decent culture to be colonized BY.

wait, this isn't 'Movie Quote' thread, is it? ;)

Ah man Vincent..where do you come from...because if its Wales *shakes fist*. Scotland has its own parliament and scares the hell out of me...of course it's its own country...it can be its own continent if it likes. I'm a wee jessie!.

I come from a long line of sons of Eire...like every other southern Brit, so naturally love the Irish, I'm watching 'The Hanging Gale' AS WE SPEAK! ....but United Kingdom should suffice.

I will merge those 2, there are also the 2 france entries which probably need merging as well.

In an ideal world France could just be deleted all together instead Tom.

Not as far as the shape and form of eastern residents went from natural genetics.
DefenderOfKnowledge 18 years, 4 months ago at Mar 15 5:46 -
rb, I thought the same thing. The Listal army is going to start a world war.

Yes, Tom, can't you just delete France with your magic techno mumbo jumbo? Gosh. ;)

Don't you EVER call Final Fantasy Anime!

According to his profile aswell, rb6k is an FF fan too so it has nothng to do with being Anime! Look at Thnilian tarring people with brushes!

Thanks Tom. We will be United again!

Oh crap, you're right. The artistic style has kind of hit that though.

You're more defensive than I am aggressive. Don't call me out for sneaking a piece of cake out of the freezer if you're the one with jewelry in your socks.

What's the deal with France, anyway? Wherever I go I hear nothing but disapproval (humorous it may be) in reference to the place. I'm not sure if there's an issue or if there's some universal understanding that the French are everyone's scapegoats.

I'm defending FF. I hold no quarter for such attacks.

The stereotype (not my opinion) of French people is that they smell and they look down their nose at everyone. They're also fine chefs! They also love surrendering.

I think World War II has spurred most of the 'scapegoating'.

Nice. So now everyone looks down on them, because the big bad countries with the big bad armies didn't surrender - rather, they threw a couple bombs here and there? Correct me if I'm sounding ignorant, but that's what I've collected so far. So France aided the Nazis?

They don't teach us anything but Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan as far as history goes over here.

Seaworth 18 years, 4 months ago at Mar 15 9:09 -
They didn't aid them, they let themselves get conquered. Whic inadvertedly aided the Axis push across the continent. Considering how poor their army is and the Maginot Line Weakness, they pretty much let Germany into Western Europe.

WW2 was probably the most interesting topic in English History. I almost feel left out that I didn't take it at A Level, but seeing as everyone else I knew took it I heard every lesson in thriplicate!

So there's a contrast between France and Belgium. I love civil disobedience. I've always liked the white plastic erasers Belgium makes, too. To me, though, all history's pretty much connected one way or another.
Moderator
Seaworth 18 years, 4 months ago at Mar 15 9:26 -
Not at all. France built the Maginot Line to protect themselves from Germany & Italy. However, they didn't build the line all the way to the North of their borders where Belgium was. The Nazis simply walked around their defensive wall through Belgium. Check a map of Europe and it'll make more sense.

I think I heard that they claim it was an intentional 'mistake'.

I edited my post once I found out the geography was jumbled. Damn, I'm being deprived.

You are not the first American to be bad at Geography! That is one subject that they do not TEACH at your schools. Looks like History is one of them too....

Would you like to move this discussion out of LD and into GD? It has become off-topic pretty much.

Yeah. It'd also be helpful if you could recommend reading for me on the time period. I know there's an Amazon forestful of documented history, but I'd like a starting point.

Just to clear it up (not starting any flame wars or anything) i would have said that to anyone who keeps replying to my posts without understanding them, i wasn't picking on him specifically, nor was i trying to be outrageous. The way i write seems to just confuse people of a certain type. (...Not anime people...)

American sarcasm's so much more obvious... Except to the occasional Australian. :)

Here in Texas, fourth grade and seventh grade history are spent on the history of the state. Eighth grade and one of the high school credits have to be spent on US history, and just about all the rest of elementary school entails something having to do with US and Texas history.

Sixth grade and one high school credit include World History, and then there's a required high school credit of World Geography in addition to a year of Government. Americans are to the Brits like the Romans were to the Greeks - going off to do their own thing (architecture/colonization) while shoplifting most of the artistic influence.
